do these things come with barf bags?
Who: Ochako + OTA
Broadcast: Fleetwide
Action: Planetside
When: Nowish?
( video / broadcast; )
Ssssoooo... anybody I know have a license to fly those space cars? I want to learn how to drive one! But they said I have to be 18 to drive it alone, so I need an adult with me. I can get the autopilot versions, but, um. They kind of freak me out? ...Also they suck. They really, really suck.
[did I mention the video image shows the background around her looks like it's upside down? because it totally looks like it is.]
Anyway, let me know if you can help! It can't be that different from a shuttle, and I'm not bad with those! Thanks in advance.
( on the planet; )
[how much do the autopilot hovers suck? Ochako's gone and found out the hard way. she's rented one that is exceptionally glitchy- it really likes to fly upside down, which is why her broadcast looks so weird. This isn't such a terrible thing when your superpower is gravity-erasing, but she can only do that for so long before she loses her lunch, so over the course of the rental she might pass people by doing the following:
1) sitting in her seat, upside down, looking awfully green
2) dangling from her clipped seatbelt like it's a swing, legs kicking
3) carefully climbing down the seatbelt trying to reach the ground
She might need a little bit of help. That's if she doesn't straight-up collide with somebody first. Uh, duck?]
Ah- ahhhh, look out!!

A machine can always fail at any moment, so it's a good thing you learned too. Driving can sound similar to piloting, but they're actually quite different. In fact, piloting is more difficult, so you shouldn't have much trouble with a car.
[He explains to her then all about those differences, both from a machine and from an environment pov (streets and space follow different physics!), as he drives her around to demonstrate what he's saying.]
Do you follow me? Or you need me to go slower?

No, no, I'm okay! I mean, I'm more of a hands-on kind of learner, so it'll probably sink in once we're driving... but I think I get it so far, yeah!

[He answers as he parks the car at the first free spot he finds. While first timers shouldn't start in a city, he thinks, she's already piloted a shuttle, so even if it's different, he thinks it already counts.]
Ready to give it a try? [He asks with a hand already opening the door.]

[It's a bit nerve-wracking, but with his instructions she already knows loads more than she did before, so she nods and shuffles over to the driver's seat, staring down at the controls as she sorts out exactly what means what. Finally, when she feels sure enough, she starts working through the stages of starting it up. She gets most of it, probably misses a minor step.]
Like... this?

[He puts all the leadership and encouragement he can in his voice, especially when he reminds her of the little step she missed. No scolding or anything, in fact he sounds quite pleased with her first try.]
--but it was just a tiny detail. You're ready to go, and safely at that, which is the most important thing. Shall we?

You're good at this. Are you a teacher?
no subject
Thank you. I've helped with training students in the Garrison, but my main role at home is leading a team of defenders of the universe.

[her eyes widen, and she has to actively drag her gaze back to the road before she veers off course by leaning towards him. focus, focus!]
You're like space heroes, then!?

[His tone isn't scolding or anything, but he does make it sound important - because it is. At least he's smiling too, hard not to when someone calls you a hero. His mind goes to Lance for a second - a different context, he tells himself.]
Sure. Saving one planet at a time.

[Even without a true scolding, she knows better. The least she can do is avoid crashing the car when people who are helping her are still in it.]
That's amazing, though... it's hard enough for heroes back home to keep Earth safe. I can't imagine doing that with a whole bunch of other planets!
no subject
[Or so he believes anyway - a tiny bit is better than nothing! But something else she said has caught his attention.]
So you're from a world with superheroes too? [And he thought it was funny to be a mecha pilot.]
no subject
Uh-huh! Heroes have existed for a bunch of generations now. And almost everyone has a Quirk even if they're not a registered hero.
