It was getting too long, you see. I became tangled in it every morn and the brushing of it was a painful business.

(Clearly annoyed, he grabs a brush, sets about smoothing it and puts it all in a ponytail. Some of the strands are rebellious, however, and fall out of the ribbon to frame his face. The tickling sensation annoys him more and he tries to tuck them, instead, behind his ears. His mangled ear doesn't make a proper perch for the copper strands and some of them fall right back where they started.)

When we're about twelve, we fill out paperwork to start preparing, after that there are classes, I suppose. Some Trill are placed under the supervision of a field docent, a joined trill who will evaluate whether someone is fit for joining. To weed out weaker personalities that the symbiont would overwhelm or people who would end up like Joran did.

I never did the paperwork. I didn't want to be joined.

There is the zhian'tara though. But I don't have enough friends here to participate, I doubt most would want to. And there are no Guardians here anyway.

It's... a rite of closure. We can meet our past hosts in that way, by having their personalities, memories, removed from us and into someone close to us. All voluntarily, of course, the friend can assume control again at any time.

No. I never felt that way. My brothers are part of me; we are seven pieces of a whole.

It probably would be. I don't know enough people well enough though, and I don't know who I'd ask to take care of... of Joran. Benjamin did it last time, my captain and a friend for three of my lives, handled him last time. [And she's not keep on making anyone handle a serial murderer.]

Joran was a serial murderer. He killed two unjoined trill and one joined trill who was on the Symbiosis Commission, who thought he was unfit for joining. [She's not the type to kill, except in war, so it's hard living with that.]

Sometimes. Norvo is an artist, nothing like me except that we're both... softer, I guess. He's in prison though, he will be for awhile. Janel was more work focused. He was willing to work with the Orion Syndicate to keep the families mining consortium going, a criminal organization basically. Slavery, black market, blackmail, those sorts of things.
