[ New Year’s Eve has come and gone without anything exploding or going awfully wrong and so today is just safe enough for something else. Steve Rogers doesn’t address the network for no reason, after all. Only today he keeps looking back and eventually, calls: ]

Are you really going to stay there throughout the whole thing?

[ There’s a flicker to Steve’s left: dark curls and a flash of a silk blouse as Peggy leans into view. ] Perhaps. After all, of the two of us, you’re the one with experience in addressing the public.

[ But! Fine! Here she is, framed beside him onscreen, and refraining from making any more jokes about the old USO show. ]

Very funny.

[ but he is smiling, small but amused. For all of his experience, he seems as if he’s been practicing his lines for this one broadcast. ]

I know some of you will say this is long overdue, but after months of asking, mostly on her part, I’ve said yes and we’ve decided to get married.

[ -- and that’s when Peggy slaps the back of her hand against Steve’s shoulder, hissing something (something for him alone) about twisting the truth and tarnishing her well-earned cred. ]

I mean, after a careful observation of mutual interests, we’ve decided to get married. What this is really about is a simple matter of proving me right. I’d like you all to tell her three weeks is a perfectly reasonable duration for a honeymoon.

[ She reaches for the device, tugging its focus onto herself. ] -- For God’s sake, don’t encourage him. We’ve only just got engaged; it’s far far too early to start discussing the rest. [ Aside, to Steve: ] I warned you when I agreed to this ridiculous message. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

[ But she’s laughing. ]

It's not getting too ahead of ourselves. Call it careful consideration of facts.

[ he'll reach out and close the device for the sake of this banter. ]

I love throwing parties and I think it would be really great to have a reception so everyone can congratulate you in person! Do you know when you're going to do it? I'll be honest. [ ahem. ] I'm not too keen on propping up my wedding as an excuse for everyone else to -- celebrate.

[ look, she's still angling to elope. she'll wear the bastard down in time. ]

Why wouldn't you want people to celebrate you two and your love for each other? It should be a day for all your friends and loved ones here to honor you and your relationship.

I mean, I totally respect if you'd rather elope. But you say "celebrate" like it's a bad thing.

[ when someone comes at her explaining that, frankly, the fleet could use a celebration then -- yes, it does sound like a bad thing. to her. but she's been touch-and-go about the whole notion up until recently. ]

It isn't exactly my style. [ then again, what is? hell if she knows these days. ] Generally, I'm of the opinion that me and him and us are no one else's business.

[ -- and this announcement was done more to appease steve. ]

[ where does she even go to from there. ]

You've done nothing wrong. [ there's no use in folding like a house of cards at the first sign of guff, after all. ] I'm quite convinced your reaction is precisely the sort of thing Steve hoped to inspire.

As I said -- a public fuss isn't much my style. [ but steve certainly is. and contrary to the vibe she gives off 99% of the time, peg would burn the world for steve rogers. ]

Well, if you don't mind my saying so, I don't think that sharing something so important with friends is a public fuss.

[ no. she imagines kara wouldn't think so. and that's all well and good for someone's relationship -- she certainly doesn't believe every pair needs to behave the same. ]

Well, thank you. I don't mind that at all. I like to think we have some things in common.

It's no bad thing.

[ to sound a little bit like captain america from time to time. although peg certainly prefers the man beneath the star. ]

Well, I would presume you wouldn't think so, what with the engagement and everything.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if he came to my world. I think we'd make a great crimefighting duo.

[ you'd think it would be easier for peg to imagine steve crime-fighting. and yet. in her mind, she draws a line between war and law enforcement. steve didn't do much of the latter. peg, on the other hand... ]
