[ New Year’s Eve has come and gone without anything exploding or going awfully wrong and so today is just safe enough for something else. Steve Rogers doesn’t address the network for no reason, after all. Only today he keeps looking back and eventually, calls: ]

Are you really going to stay there throughout the whole thing?

[ There’s a flicker to Steve’s left: dark curls and a flash of a silk blouse as Peggy leans into view. ] Perhaps. After all, of the two of us, you’re the one with experience in addressing the public.

[ But! Fine! Here she is, framed beside him onscreen, and refraining from making any more jokes about the old USO show. ]

Very funny.

[ but he is smiling, small but amused. For all of his experience, he seems as if he’s been practicing his lines for this one broadcast. ]

I know some of you will say this is long overdue, but after months of asking, mostly on her part, I’ve said yes and we’ve decided to get married.

[ -- and that’s when Peggy slaps the back of her hand against Steve’s shoulder, hissing something (something for him alone) about twisting the truth and tarnishing her well-earned cred. ]

I mean, after a careful observation of mutual interests, we’ve decided to get married. What this is really about is a simple matter of proving me right. I’d like you all to tell her three weeks is a perfectly reasonable duration for a honeymoon.

[ She reaches for the device, tugging its focus onto herself. ] -- For God’s sake, don’t encourage him. We’ve only just got engaged; it’s far far too early to start discussing the rest. [ Aside, to Steve: ] I warned you when I agreed to this ridiculous message. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

[ But she’s laughing. ]

It's not getting too ahead of ourselves. Call it careful consideration of facts.

[ he'll reach out and close the device for the sake of this banter. ]

[ it's sort of really funny letting peggy deal with the excitement first. he'll pitch in later. ]

[ she's teasing, a bit. she's not sure how to read peggy's reluctance ]

I think we both worry it might end up bigger than we imagined it to be.

[ and how quickly he takes a question asked about peggy and turns the answer to a we. it's not a courtesy. they are both private people, have been since their name and their tale became so grandiose without their leave. ]

A fair concern. Have you thought about being less amazing people?

[ he dips his chin, bites back a smile that's borderline shy. ]

I think we'll just go for something small. I think we can both manage small pretty well.

[ he was just fine with the christmas party, for example. ]

Well, if you'll have me and my plus-one, we'd love to come.

[ ....oh right. mon-el. these things are sent to try us. ]

Very much so. No fleetwide announcements without my permission about our relationship in quite a long time.

I'm glad to see he learned.

[ so huffy about it. ]

you two are getting really serious, aren't you?

[ she softens a bit, turning more thoughtful than playful ]

Well... if anyone can understand it, it's you. I've been by myself for a really long time. And I'm not talking about relationships... Stranger in a strange land stuff. I love my sister and Eliza and my friends at home, but no one really understands what I've been through. He does, though. Even though our cultures were... very different, he still knows what it's like to wake up one day and have everything gone. It's like you and Peggy. Some things you can't expect regular people to understand.

Plus, I mean, have you seen him?

[uprightness]

[ STILL NOT IMPRESSED. ]

as long as he makes you happy. be sure to tell him cultural differences aren't an excuse for any misconduct.

Though I haven't had to as much lately. He really wants to do the right thing.

[ one time he hurt her. that's more than enough. steve didn't step in back then, he didn't interfere. but it doesn't mean he's going to forget anytime soon. ]
