Nah, [shaking her head]. Someone being charming. It's nice to hear. Pretty words, you know? [Shrug.] But that's all they are, if they're not backed up.

[A little laugh.] I met a guy in Luceti who was very charming. I could hardly believe a word coming out of his mouth. And he had this thing about opening doors for me? We got into a whole conversation about it once, because... that's not really a thing where I'm from, and I didn't understand what he was doing or why he was doing it.

[Wow, she hadn't thought about that in a long time. She shifts a little to set the bowl down in the space between them.]

Holy shit. [he sounds so amused] He did the whole gentleman thing? I thought girls were supposed to hate that. It's sort of a - I don't know, some girls are probably still into it. Kind of out of my field of expertise, if you get what I mean.

[She does get what he means and she nods but she's grinning too because it was so weird and it's kind of nice to be able to talk about something silly.]

Yeah, he had to explain it to me, something about... chivalry? [Stretching back in her memory now, it was fairly early on.] And how it wasn't about girls being 'weaker' but it was about... oh, how did he put it... being polite. And showing respect. And so I let him, because I didn't want to make him feel rude or anything, but... it took some getting used to.

[As in, sometimes she'd forget and go for the door and he'd race to beat her. It was flattering and flustering for her, and also very strange.]

Yeah, sounds about right. [he snorts, leaning over to drop his bowl into Katara's] I mean - holding the door for someone's just polite, but running to do it? That's a new level of trying too hard.

What, he'd have a thing for you or something? Trying to impress?

[Her eyes widen with something akin to alarm.] Oh, I don't think so. Or if he did, he never said anything.

[He did; she's clueless; it's sad.]

He was that way with a lot of girls. [Hmm, then why did Michael...] I think he did it just because he knew it threw me off a little. He was the sort of person that liked to tease like that, you know?

[Ben is the worst to talk about this stuff with]

So . . . friendly teasing? [he's oblivious to that stuff, a point that certain people like to point out to him almost daily] Teasing through being overly polite - that's a new one to me.

[At least she's not looking for advice, just something light to talk about.

So she gives him a quick grin.] Maybe you should try it sometime. Really throw people off.

[he gives a snort] I think I'll give it a pass. I already put people off with my attitude.

Mmm... [Considering glance.] You sound like you like it that way.

[Not a judgement or a criticism or... anything, really. More of an observation than anything.]

Eh. [he shrugs a shoulder] It isn't something I do on purpose - most of the time. But like I told you, I'm not much of a people person, either.

Yeah, you did say that. [But, you know, you've spent the past hour or so with her, so she's not sure how much credence to give that.] Oh - it looks like the sun is starting to go down. I should get going.

Sure did. [he said people, not singular person!! He leans forward to squint at the sun and nods] Yeah, me too. Desert at night? No thanks.

[She arches her eyebrows at him in question.] Too cold?

Yeah. I mean, probably. I don't know how this desert works but I'd assume - anyway, yeah, too cold, I'd freeze 'cause I don't got the clothes for it, etc. It wouldn't be pretty.

Maybe you should pick some up while we're here. [She starts to stand to begin to put things away.] Clothes shopping is really boring, but at least everything is free. I hear it's not that way at all in other systems.

I don't mind clothes shopping so much. I should probably pick up a few T-shirts, at least. [he stands as well, slinging his bag over his shoulder before he picks up the bag] I do like free, too.

[A half shrug.] Who doesn't like free?

[And then she gives him a quick grin.] It was nice meeting you, Ben.

[Beeeeeecause he's totally gonna just let her walk off to where all the space ships are by herself now, right?]

Rich folk. [he's just guessing, who knows]

[do you really think he's that much of a jackass? Nope] Trying to get rid of me already? I'll follow you back, geez.

[Well, he keeps claiming he is!!! But no, she just doesn't think about these things, tbh. It's not like there's anyone going to attack her here.]

If you want to, sure? [Because... okay, she wasn't really expecting that but... sure?] I guess we're both heading in the same direction, after all.
