That's true. I didn't think to add in the time people have been stuck in other places. Crowley was stuck in his last one for six years. [And he doesn't remember his nearly five years in Luceti.] I was surprised to hear how unsettling common this all is.

But, being stuck here with you isn't so bad. [He doesn't really think over the fact that he said that out loud at first. Then it dawns on him as he quickly adds.] There have been a lot of great people I've met on this weird road trip. It's been worth it all for that.

I only knew of two people in Marina who'd been to a similar place before, but here it's almost as common as not having been somewhere else.

[She looks up at the comment about being stuck with her not being so bad.] It's not so bad being with you either. [She doesn't bother to add the disclaimer, but it's true. A lot of people have made it worth it. Including some who aren't here anymore.]

Do you know anyone who's from Marina or maybe someone you didn't know but who was there as well? That seems to happen pretty often too.

I swear that when I first woke up here half of the people were from some kind of evil castle.

Chekov is the only one who remembers Marina who is here now or who's been here the whole time I have been. There are people who passed through there though like you. Like Allen Walker. [They'd been very close there. Things had been more tense and awkward meeting him here without those memories, not that she could blame him for it.] Others. But you could all just be from different realities too.

I remember Allen. He was a nice guy. [Vash had never considered giving blood before Allen started making him feel more comfortable about it.]

I still find it hard to think about how I might have lived in other places without any sort of memory of it. All I know is that other me was an idiot for not getting to know you better. Although he might have had a good idea to pick up the guitar. [That sounds like something that could annoy Chuuya a lot better than the harmonica.]

Well, I guess when it comes to us we need a memorable first encounter and then like a year to think on things before really trying the friend thing. [Was friend the right word? What other word would she use?] He wasn't around long enough for that.

Hm. I suppose that sounds like me. Wander in, make a loud mess, then run off again.

You didn't make the mess alone. Or run off alone. [She wasn't really giving him much of a chance either time.]

You sure? I'm pretty good at making messes. [You should see the bar he'll destroy later.]

Oh, of that I have no doubt, but I was there too for this. I didn't realize I was missing out on anything.

Missing out? [He chuckles.] At being co-captain with a walking disaster? Pretty sure you weren't missing out on much of anything.

Oh, come on. You know you're more than that, right? [Or do you?]

An obnoxious walking disaster? [He adds with a joking tone. He's never been good at being serious when it comes to talking about himself.]

Not what I had in mind. [Listing his virtues is on the tip of her tongue but she falls quiet instead, thinking about how for awhile after meeting Winn she called him every day to tell him something good about himself because it seemed like he needed to hear it. She thinks about Winn a lot. So many things remind her of him, but somehow this feels different and it unsettles her. It takes a moment before she remembers to make words again.]

Um...you can walk. It's the only one I'm agreeing to.

[He chuckles.] Have you seen me walk in these boots? [He gestures his head towards his feet.] I trip over my feet all the time. So you might as well call me a complete liar.

[He won't push the issue or argue about him being a mess if she won't just go along with it.]

I don't think you're a liar. I think you...hide things. [Too real?]

[That gives Vash a pause before chuckles and gives a tired smile.] I suppose so. I guess I just wanted to fit in. [Hiding things made that easier to do.]

Oh no, you think this [Motioning to him] is what fitting in is? [She smiles gently back, not wanting the teasing to come off too harsh.]

No, I get that. I mean, I went the other way with things, but I had the X-Men. [She wasn't so alone with being different. She could be brash and put it out front and be defiant in it because she still had people no matter how many recoiled from it.]

Okay, fitting in a little bit! Not too much. [She was successful in the right level of teasing.]

I'm glad you had the X-Men. From who I've been able to meet here-- [And seen in your memories.] --they seem like a really great group of people.

They are. ...Were I guess. [The smile fades.] I'm glad I had them too. [She pauses before her next words.] I'm glad I have you too. [She could have said the crew of the Twin Roses. She is glad she has all of them, but that isn't what she just said.]

They are is right. They are still here with you after all. And who knows what could happen when this crazy show is over. [Even depressed he has trouble not thinking on the bright side of things. He smiles at his own inclusion.] I'm glad I have you too. It's been nice. Not having someone be surprised at hearing I'm not a human.

Technically, it's just Kurt. Remy was an X-Man in my world, but in his he never was. [But there had been other X-Men in this place. Again, not from her world, but it didn't really matter. She still felt for them. Connected to them. And maybe he meant it more spiritually, like they were always with her and whether he did or didn't she can't really say it's untrue.]

It probably helps when you talk to a fellow non-human about it. [She smiles at him, glad she could be that for him.]

These different worlds with the same people gets awfully confusing sometimes.

And, yeah, I suppose it does. Makes it a lot easier when you're not the odd-man out. [Or one of two men out. Having so many non-humans in the fleet certainly helped when it came to being more opened about himself.]
