I have appreciated having you as compatriots since I first arrived. Current circumstances have required me to move to another ship however. There was no option not to transfer.

In light of the fact that my move has left the Caprine without lab support, I am offering to assist the Caprine in this regard until the ship gains medical support of their own. If you need me for any reason, you can contact me or I'll be on the Blameless now.

[New ship, only slightly different. The basic design wasn't too different from the SS Caprine. However, there were things about it that were different. It had been customized by a different crew than the Caprine had had.

So this called for investigation! After going to the lab at the back of ship and looking it over to make sure everything was in order, he headed out into the corridor to explore the ship. Especially if he was going to be the First Mate of the Blameless, he needed to know where everything was.

He's just wandering the public areas of the ship. Maybe he'll run into one of the crew at some point]

[The phrasing is not even that weird for Ulaz. Being from a race that tended to take control of other races without much concern for them, he was used to hearing others being referred to by such superficial terms as what race they belong to]

[Ulaz glanced down at the cat as she began to rub against his leg. Yep, definitely behaved like some of the pets the Alteans had had. He reached out a hand to pet her... or let her rub against his hand in the course of of her rubbing against his leg]

What is the animal's name?

[Justice nods in acknowledgment. Same universe. That seems like important information.]

She has no name, just as I do not. But she will respond to Loyalty, when she chooses to respond at all.

[Loyalty, for her part, will happily purr as Ulaz starts to pet her.]

Be aware that she endears herself to people in part so that they are not angry when she behaves badly. [She is going to chew on your wires, Ulaz. Fair warning.]

I've heard these types of animals don't always choose to acknowledge their names so I'm not surprised.

[Loyalty definitely seems like a sweet creature and her purring is rather... endearing.

Which from the sounds of it is exactly what she is intending]

And what sort of things should I be expecting her to do?

She steals food, especially meat. She also enjoys chewing wires and scratching furniture.

[Loyalty keeps rubbing up against Ulaz, purring and flashing the biggest kitten eyes. Justice shakes his head at her.] Someone programmed a small robot to chase her when she chews wires, however.

I see. I will remember that she does this. Especially since there are things in the lab that should not have scratches or teeth marks in them.

[Not to mention potentially bad for said cat who kept looking at him with "I'm sweet innocent cat" eyes. Yes, she definitely seemed to want to endear herself to others]

Have they? How effective has that been?

[He doubted not very when she kept doing it]

It is effective when the little robot finds her, but it has not broken her of the habit. I do not know what she finds so appealing about chewing wires.

[There are many things Justice will not understand about mortal creatures. Wire chewing is definitely one of them.]

I believe it is only a matter of time before she realizes that the little robot cannot actually harm her.

Boredom perhaps. Or she finds something interesting about them.

[He didn't really have a pet, those seemed like logical reasons]

Eventually she will learn what it does and not be concerned with it. Still there should be ways of helping her to break that habit. Peacefully.

Perhaps I should obtain more toys for her. She has destroyed most of what I have provided, but she is fond of the scratching post.

[Justice didn't realize how much stuffing was in those little toys before she tore them apart.]

I am unsure of what to do. I have tried speaking with her, but she seems to be beyond convincing. [And Justice isn't going to punish her for doing things that he doesn't like but aren't inherently unjust. If he wouldn't do it to an adult human, then he won't do it to Loyalty.]

Something to keep her entertained that is less destructible might help. There probably isn't much on the ship for a feline.

[Ulaz would completely agree with the thought of not punishing the feline for being a feline. They just needed to figure out how to communicate with her]

I doubt words will get through to her since she likely doesn't naturally understand our words. She responds to words she knows because she's learned what that means. There should be ways to communicate with her.

She understands most of what I say, I believe. She simply does not care to listen, especially when I am telling her 'no.' [And then she snuggles and purrs at him afterwards. Clever, manipulative girl.]

Do you know of acceptable, non-destructible cat toys?

Perhaps. I didn't think the creatures the Alteans had were that smart, but I could be wrong. [He can tell she's manipulative. She's doing a good job right now to convince him she was an innocent cat]

Off the top of my head? No. I can do some research and see what would work for her.

I do not know what Alteans are. [He's assuming something world-specific. Either that, or another mortal thing Justice has not learned about yet.]

Thank you. I believe she would thank you as well, if she could speak. [But as it is, she's very happy to keep rubbing up against Ulaz and purring, so maybe that's her version of a thanks.]

Alteans were a race that is similar to you in appearance. They had pointed ears and color patches on their cheeks. Between them and the early Galra Empire, they built our universe.
