Heron Bridge: Closed to Crewmates

[ It was a good thing that Carol had a few days to adjust between arrival and transport to her assigned ship. During that time she was able to get some information from Maggie and Carl and formulate a plan. The wisest course of action appeared to be the same thing she had done upon arrival in Alexandria: behave exactly like the timid, inconsequential housewife that she appears to be.

A plan that is seriously threatened by her position as the only security personnel on the ship. It's a fair enough assignment, she certainly has the skills necessary to defend the ship. But it is disconcerting to have her cards pulled from her vest so early.

After the initial celebration, such as it is, she reports to the bridge to take stock of the loadout. She opens the compartment and makes a show of surprise. ]

Oh my. [ She laughs awkwardly, and picks up one of the guns gingerly, as if she were afraid it might bite her. She turns to one of the other crewmates on the bridge ] I don't suppose there's a shooting range anywhere. Or maybe some kind of simulators I could train on?

Iskaulit Library: OTA

[ Reading is Carol's favorite way to pass the time. When she finds out there's a library she makes a point to visit as soon as possible. The lack of organization is frustrating. But she tries not to focus on that, and instead just let herself browse without any specific goal in mind.

It lasts about five minutes before she gets frustrated. Luckily, she's not alone. She just hopes the other person browsing won't mind an interruption. ]

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you but hi, I'm Carol. [ Her smile is a little simpering, as she's still doing her best to keep up the "simple housewife" act. ] I'm new here and I can't figure out how these books are organized. Do you have any tips on how to find anything?

[ Carol smiles a tight-lipped smile at the camera, her eyes crinkling warmly. She's standing in the kitchen on the Heron, a variety of what passes for ingredients spread out around her. One could almost imagine her hosting some kind of low-key cooking show. ]

Hi! I'm Carol, and I'm new here. I noticed that the food leaves something to be desired, at least on my ship. So, I thought why not see what I can do to make things a little nicer. If any of the rest of you are interested in this kind of thing, or have been working on this kind of thing, I'd love to hear from you. I thought it would be nice to share tips and experiment!

Hey, I was kidding. Having more people around who like to cook is great since so many of us like to eat.

And to be fair, I don't think any of the people I mentioned ever really worked in a restaurant before. [Though Jarvis definitely could.]

Mmm...yeah, they were preserving all the food which altered the taste slightly. Some people notice it more than others.

[ Carol considers this. ]

I still don't think restaurant cooking is for me. I do this to relax. I'm not sure cooking to order like that would be very relaxing.

[ She hums thoughtfully. ]

I wonder if it's some kind of citric acid preservative. [ She looks up. ] Do you know if there' equipment that can test that sort of thing here? [ She smiles demurely. ] It's just been so much technology here, I'm still catching up on what does what.

[passingthrough]

Well, depends what you compare it too, [like fighting the dead] but no, probably not super relaxing.

[She nods.] We do and you got it in one. It was ascorbic acid. Vitamin C.

Can you tell which augment you got? That will determine how much or which kind of tech you have an easier time with.

[perservering]

[ She makes a little "Huh." sound. ]

Wonder how they get it in there.

[ The augment question is easier. ]

Security. So I guess... guns? And not really food testing, I guess.

There was no one left to ask. They might have had some records on it someone copied or took though if you're interested enough to ask around.

[She nods.] Yeah, it'll also help with the ships' weapon systems too. I think it even comes with bullet-proof vests if you want. So many perks with this abduction and bodily violation. [It's funny because it's...sad?]

It's an interesting question, though I don't know how much use the answer would be. It's not like we're producing a lot of extra produce around here that we need to preserve, right?

[ At least it didn't seem like they were. ]

Bullet proof vests? [ She laughs a little, in disbelief or resignation, she's not sure. ] I didn't realize there were so many firefights around here. And, wait, I'll have to fire the torpedoes or whatever if there's a battle with another ship?

Not really. The Iskaulit has a community garden and some of the other ships do too. Mine does. But it wouldn't be enough to feed everyone if we were depending on what we have now. We tend to eat it while it's fresh.

[She nods.] Unless your ship has another security officer that'll be you. It does come up, but pretty rarely. [Or at least what she considers battles rare which might be someone else's "way too often."]

[ Food security has been a big source of concern back home lately. The thought of having access to so much technology, to go anywhere in the galaxy, and still go hungry is discouraging.

Although not as intimidating as the thought of having to fire space canons at something. ]

Well. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Though I guess it's not so much different than a gun. Just bigger.

[ Her standard for how often the battles happen is probably close to what Kitty's are now, anyway. ]

There's a little more tech involved in the process. Targeting sensors and all that. Plus, they should lasers instead of bullets or cannonballs, but I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Good Lord.

[ She sighs. That all sounds really complicated. ]

I should probably check out one of those simulations and see if this... thing is doing what it's supposed to.

[ She gestures vaguely in the direction of her augment. ]

should = shoot (apparently, lol)

Good call. Though hopefully you'll have a long time to wait before anything shoot-y happens.

That's always the hope, isn't it?

I do get kind of bored...

I mean, yes, of course. [Both things can be true?]

[ She can appreciate that. That kind of restless feeling under your skin. You don't want to actually fight really. But some kind of release of the tension that ends up building up in the absence of one. ]

Maybe we could spar sometime or somethin'.

[passingthrough]

We could do that if you want. I train just about every day, so anytime you're interested. [She always feels a little strange spurring with people without superpowers, but it's not like those match ups always work well either and she can play with her power tied behind her back so to speak.]

Thanks. We'll give it a shot, see how it goes. At the very least you can probably give me some pointers.

[ Which is true. She's okay at hand-to-hand, but better with firearms. And has no idea how to use space cannons, so she could stand to learn a few things. ]

Maybe you can give me some too. [She won't even doubt it. There's always something to be learned from another person, and she knows Carol was a survivor of a bad situation like herself.]
