[ Loki is sitting on a chair, decked in . . . a large fancy red robe. The background music is currently playing this song, something he heard on the planet and immediately stole for his own needs. He's sitting on the chair, legs slightly up in the air like he don't care because guess what — ]

It seems my request was approved and I am now the captain of the First Breath. Rest assured, I will treat my crew benevolently. Possibly with beer and movies.


[ i. knife play ]

[ Loki has never liked competitions.

Which seems like a paradox because Loki certainly likes to win. But he never had the acumen for Asgard's sports. He could barely lift their swords and axes, after all, constantly stumbling and falling into the dirt. A weakling. It was his mother, a shield-maiden of old who gifted him with his daggers, showed him the form he needed. And like the crack of a white, Loki's knife-throw was impeccable. He could cut down men twice his size meters away. So he found himself here, one of the Bright Birds (for now), flicking daggers at the bulls eye with ease, letting the applause wash over him.

It felt . . . good. That doesn't happen very often for Loki. Briefly, he wonders if this is how Thor feels all the time. He waves back briefly. ]

Why thank you. Please bring out a challenge, next time.

[ ii. poker ]

[ Money is not something Loki gives a lot of thought to. He has noticed the decent influx of money that comes to him via the Atroma and he is a little pleased. A twisted sense of appreciation in a way (something Loki has never been fully able to rebuke, even if he recognizes where it stems from). Either way, he's not going to complain about it as he moves the cash forward before leaning back with a lazy smirk. His opponent looks most disgruntled, folding his cards and leaving Loki with the winnings. As they leave Loki's table, some of Loki's cards vanish in a flicker of gold light. As the next person approaches, Loki smiles, sitting up straight. ]

[ Eventually, the lure of competing (and winning easily, even if he is cheating half the time) gets old, so he takes up the lucrative job of marketing. Everyone who comes up to the stall gets a Thor button to pin on their shirts. Unfortunately, after a while, the button changes to "THOR SUCKS" because that's just how life is. However, when you come back for your refund, Loki is gone.

But for now, you can come up and get some authentic Thor merchandise! ]

Then let's start there. [ He points to a sign indicating an art gallery. If Loki's interested in art then he'll have a lot to say about it. ]

[ Loki's eyes light up. Arts, theater, fashion. Those were his primary interests though he was always wary of indulging (and then often ended up overindulging to make up for it). ]

If you like. Is this your first time on another planet? I know many mortals have not mastered space travel.

[signifies]

[ Clark feels a pang of guilt: his people had technically mastered space travel. Earth was supposed to be an alien planet to him, but by the time he'd learnt that word, it hadn't felt like it was one.

If he said he was Kryptonian, would it deny how his parents had treated him like any other human son? He couldn't very well say he was human. Or "mortal", as Loki put it. (Come to think of it. . . he might not even be mortal, if the sun kept replenishing him. . .)

He hadn't realised that not needing to hide could lead to such a complication. ]

It's possible, but not common. [ He decides this is the most honest answer for both. ] This is the first real chance I've gotten.

[dothelokimotion]

[ Hmm. Perhaps Clark's world had alien visitors as well. But that wasn't important, though Loki studiously files it away. ]

Then you should not miss the opportunity. Do you not wish to join in the competitions? They pay well.

[signifies]

[ Hmm, he does need money. . . he'll have to study which ones are fair for him to participate in. ]

I'm all right for now. [ Clark grins. ] I have my heart set on some alien art.

[ He's practically bleeding his excitement. ]

[dothelokimotion]

[ His lips curve upward, pleased. ]

Then I'll be sure to recommend the best. As it stands, I need some for my ship as well.

[signifies]

[ Loki strikes him as the type for fine taste. Clark's not sure he'll enjoy the same, but he'll appreciate the thought. ]

Speaking of ship, they put me on the Bishop.

[dothelokimotion]

[ Loki mulls on that. ]

I cannot say I am familiar. But I have not been among the Fleet for very long.

[signifies]

That's all right. How's your ship so far?

[dothelokimotion]

Dull.

[ Loki doesn't hold back. ]

Though I do not know them well, I don't foresee us becoming comrades.

[signifies]

That's a shame. I think you're a fountain of interesting conversation.

[ He feels another pang of guilt. He has more in common with two Asgardians he's just met instead of anyone else at home.

It doesn't feel like a good realisation. ]

And I'm not just saying that because I'm trying to disarm you for phase 2 of my plan.

[dothelokimotion]

[ Loki's smile flashes, quicksilver. ]

You could. I respect a good trick.

[ He turns his gaze away as they head down a colourful street. Vendors with baubles and banners, tapestries and hangings litter the sides. ]

Thor knows mortals better. I am not keen to invite that kind of heartache. It is one thing to be worshipped centuries ago. It is another to walk among them and feel their skin. Know their hearts.

[ Even if Loki's skin is feigned, he is still of Asgard. People here, regardless of how long they've been in the Fleet, would vanish. Die. Thor has a big heart. It could hold many people, even those he's never met. Loki's heart is small. It can only house a few and those it kept were long gone. Only Thor remains.

No. Loki isn't simply proud, though pride keeps his chin upward. Loki is fearful. He has always been. ]

[signifies]

[ Clark smiles mischievously at him. He suspects it's much harder than Loki will let on, but he'll get there if he has his heart set on it.

He looks around as they keep walking. ]

It's not for everyone. [ Outliving the people they love. He has four parents and there's only one left.

He doesn't know that Mom will outlive him, in this case. Even if death ends up not sticking for Clark. ]

Thor mentioned you were headed for Earth. I hope things work out for you when you're there.

[dothelokimotion]

[ His expression tightens. For the first time, Loki isn't terribly keen on sharing his past. He doesn't regret it . . . but he is enjoying Clark's company. ]

Unlikely. Earth isn't fond of me, but they love him there. No doubt he will pave the way.

[signifies]

[ His reporter instinct tingles: there's a story he doesn't know yet. It probably has something to do with those incidents Thor was vague about.

Clark decides he doesn't want to pry. ]

Well, I like to look on the bright side. [ He pauses to look over a stall selling muffins, but he'll have to come back when he has more money. ]

Who knows. . . maybe you'll start a fashion trend. Black's always in.

[dothelokimotion]

[ Loki snorts delicately. ]

I've seen what passes for fashion on Earth. It wouldn't take much.

[signifies]

That's the spirit. You'll have your own label in no time.

[ He gives Loki a friendly pat on the shoulder. ]

[dothelokimotion]

[ He looks at Clark blankly. ]

Is it necessary for the clothing to bear my name?

[signifies]

Well, no. You can call it whatever you like.

[dothelokimotion]

[ Hm. Like an honoured craftsman. Loki had no idea that Earth still followed the old customs. All their clothes looked the same, after all. ]

I will consider it.

[ And with a twinkle in his eye, Loki procures a muffin in his hand, tossing it to Clark. ]

[signifies]

[ He's startled, but he catches it. ]

Did you pay for that?

[dothelokimotion]

[ Loki sniffs, mildly insulted. ]

I am not one for robbing the peasantry. I left him some coin.

[signifies]

[ He was so graceful and quick. Clark realises it's not the first time he's going to feel outclassed.

It's actually nice.

And Clark offers him the muffin first. ]

We probably shouldn't eat inside, might as well.

[dothelokimotion]

[ Loki stares at it and then at Clark. ]

That is for you.

[signifies]

All right. I'll get you back for this, just you wait.

[ He bites into it and lights up. Delicious. ]
