[ Loki is sitting on a chair, decked in . . . a large fancy red robe. The background music is currently playing this song, something he heard on the planet and immediately stole for his own needs. He's sitting on the chair, legs slightly up in the air like he don't care because guess what — ]

It seems my request was approved and I am now the captain of the First Breath. Rest assured, I will treat my crew benevolently. Possibly with beer and movies.

[ i. knife play ]

[ Loki has never liked competitions.

Which seems like a paradox because Loki certainly likes to win. But he never had the acumen for Asgard's sports. He could barely lift their swords and axes, after all, constantly stumbling and falling into the dirt. A weakling. It was his mother, a shield-maiden of old who gifted him with his daggers, showed him the form he needed. And like the crack of a white, Loki's knife-throw was impeccable. He could cut down men twice his size meters away. So he found himself here, one of the Bright Birds (for now), flicking daggers at the bulls eye with ease, letting the applause wash over him.

It felt . . . good. That doesn't happen very often for Loki. Briefly, he wonders if this is how Thor feels all the time. He waves back briefly. ]

Why thank you. Please bring out a challenge, next time.

[ ii. poker ]

[ Money is not something Loki gives a lot of thought to. He has noticed the decent influx of money that comes to him via the Atroma and he is a little pleased. A twisted sense of appreciation in a way (something Loki has never been fully able to rebuke, even if he recognizes where it stems from). Either way, he's not going to complain about it as he moves the cash forward before leaning back with a lazy smirk. His opponent looks most disgruntled, folding his cards and leaving Loki with the winnings. As they leave Loki's table, some of Loki's cards vanish in a flicker of gold light. As the next person approaches, Loki smiles, sitting up straight. ]

[ Eventually, the lure of competing (and winning easily, even if he is cheating half the time) gets old, so he takes up the lucrative job of marketing. Everyone who comes up to the stall gets a Thor button to pin on their shirts. Unfortunately, after a while, the button changes to "THOR SUCKS" because that's just how life is. However, when you come back for your refund, Loki is gone.

But for now, you can come up and get some authentic Thor merchandise! ]

[ Loki blinks, mulling that over. ]

I suppose it's fine for now.

It is a far sight better than the last world.

[Not that it's hard to achieve. Nariba Relia was dead and deserted. Just about any kind of civilisation is a step up. There's certainly more here to occupy their attention than their own ghosts.]

That is hardly difficult to accomplish.

[ Loki glances at Thor. ]

You really like it here.

[Thor pauses while scanning the shop signs in the windows, looking back at Loki.]

I do, yes. [He hadn't given it much active thought until now.] There's a lot to like.

[The people here are alive and well. Their cities thrive. Thor's been to many worlds like this before, of course. Ever since Ragnarok, though, he finds there's much more to appreciate about them than he did before. When he took his life and everything in it for granted.]

It's a reminder of what a world should be.

Do you think this is it?

[ Loki snorts delicately. ]

It is a mismatch of worlds colliding. It works but it'll never be very stable.

Is that not what many worlds already are? Even Asgard was that.

[Though Asgard was the one doing most of the colliding.]

And will have to be once more. Unless we find some uninhabited land somewhere, we will need to live alongside another world.

Or we could simply hide ourselves from them. They need not know we are there at all.

[ Loki is sure he can manage a decently sized illusion for a city at least. ]

Set up a secret city on Earth and never tell them we're actually there?

[That's like, super rude, Loki.]

[ But a solid idea. ]

Why not? We can avoid all the Midgardian politics that way.

[Thor shakes his head, though he's still in a good enough mood.]

No, we must be direct about this. Unless we truly run out of options.

[Besides, he suspects the wizard will immediately figure it out even if they tried subterfuge.]

I hadn't thought of something like that though.

[ Loki can deal with that :))) ]

Of course not. Why would you have?

Perhaps because I did take your point about considering other options.

[His mind simply doesn't work the same way as Loki's, so he didn't think about creating a hidden society. That, he thinks, is one of the benefits of having Loki's perspective. It's entirely different from his own.]

[ He blinks, a little surprised before looking away, self-conscious. ]

I merely think it's viable. To avoid dealing with human politics.

Sure, but I do not think it's the best approach we could take. If we're going to take up residence on someone else's world, we shouldn't make ourselves separate from it entirely.

Why not?

Midgard is divided. It can barely form any sense of unity and togetherness. Putting us there would only incite more volatile reactions. At the very least, we should wait until we're firmly established. Making us both equals on the field. Otherwise we'll come off as beggars.

[This is exactly what Strange had argued, but it rankles less coming from Loki. At least he's not saying it as though the very idea of a negative reaction had never occurred to Thor.]

We are, Loki. We can't deny the fact that we're the ones in need.

We're Gods.

[ Despite the steps Loki has made, it still rankles that they were brought so low. By Odin of all people. ]

And they do not need to know that.

That has not changed. We are what we are.

[But Thor also knows what they are not. They are not a people who have a home. They are not arriving in a position of strength and majesty. They are scared, grieving and in need of help. Pride will not serve those things.

And Thor cannot countenance starting things with a deception.]

They do. What other reason would we give for being there at all?

[ Loki merely presses his lips into a thin line. Earth has already gained Thanos' attention. With the stones there, Thanos will come. At least with the Tessaract, Loki might be able to set up portals to avoid detective. The universe is big enough to escape.

But if they land on Earth . . .

Loki's reasons make sense. But a good deal is motivated by fear. ]

Why should they need a reason?

[Dr Strange's words in Thor's ears. He's loathe to admit they got under his skin, yet that's where they ended up. Shaking his head slightly, he meets Loki's question steadily. Despite the seriousness that settles in his bones.]

Because I will not have them saying we are an invasion, or attempting conquest. Some will say it anyway - I know. [He admits that, little though he likes it.] But I won't give them a reason to.

[ Loki eyes him briefly before letting it go. ]

No. I know you have our interests at heart.

Of course. Always.

[No matter how hard the road will be.]

[ Loki nods, falling somber. Perhaps he should leave. Perhaps he'll just make it worse. ]

[It's a strange silence that falls between them. An uncertainty as to what to say next, when all that's discussed is a matter they can't resolve. Not here, not now. Thor comes to a halt, letting out a breath then turning his head this way and that.]

Ah, there. [He points out the decrepit sign hanging above a doorway.] That's the one, isn't it?

[Thor claps Loki on the shoulder a couple of times, prompting him to come along.]

Let's have a look.

[ Loki blinks, pulling himself back to reality as he follows. ]
