... it's not like the Loveline at all... [ she exhales and slumps before she shoots back up. ] But this is important! It sounds like a lot of people need help...

Is everyone okay? Um-- [ she presses her fist against her mouth. ] It looks super dangerous out there!

Where is everyone? If we weren't separated, we wouldn't have things like this... so there must be more people! I'm Megumi Aino, I'm fifteen and I'm from Pikarigaoka, Japan!

[ SALUTES. ] I'm ready to help however I can!

You came in at a pretty hectic time. The fleet was attacked the other day, we're working repairs right now. Hopefully the ship you get transferred to won't be too beat up.

I'm Hiro Hamada, Engineer Extraordinaire of the SS Bishop.

An engineer? That's awesome!

Hamada-kun? [ jumpin right to that, yep ] So I'll be on one of the little ships? They look so far away right now...

[oh my. he hopes she doesn't mind him calling her megumi...]

Yeah, we're mostly docked at waystations right now. Everybody chips in on the ships. The augment they gave you should tell you what your job is, so you should know it already. It's kind of weird to get used to having knowledge in your brain you don't remember learning, but... it does come in handy.

What're the jobs? Should I know all of them or does it just come to you like--bang! [ she mimics a small explosion with her hands. ]

The info's pretty much programmed in. There are engineers, pilots, security officers, lab supports, communications officers, and a bunch of different civilian jobs.

Hm... I wonder what I am! [ she looks at her hands, balling them into fists and then extending her fingers. ] I don't feel any different at all...

But an engineer, they make things, right? What can you do?

Yeah. I'm in charge of making huge repairs on the ship, and for keeping the engine and the shields going.

... Buuuuuut, as for what I can do, well, that's a whole different story. Robotics is my life. I can make some pretty impressive stuff.

You make robots?! That's so cool!

[ SHUT. UP. YOU MAKE ROBOTS??? ]

You haven't made any recently, have you? I guess you're too busy with the ship...

Well, yeah, but I still build in my free time. I made an alarm system for my ship that flashes different colors for different emergencies, and the manual one sends off a distress signal. I've also been helping supply ships with grow lights for medical herbs and some crops, and I've got a hyper composting bin in the works.

[Another teenager? It's bad enough this Atroma is kidnapping people for an unknown audience's entertainment, but to be taking so many kids? Whoever the people are behind this, they're sick. Despite her anger at them, she has nothing but a warm smile for Megumi.]

Hello, Miss Aino. I am Dr. Beverly Crusher and I'm afraid you arrived at a bad time, but don't worry, no one has been too seriously injured. Our ships on the other hand... [She sighs.]

Anyway, I have a little break in my schedule, and I'm sure you have a lot of questions...

Hi, Miss Doctor! [ her salute wilts slightly until her hand goes to her side. ] But people're still hurt, aren't they...

How are the ships? Can we repair them? How many are there?

They were, yes, but don't worry, we got everyone patched up. The people are in much better condition than the ships right now, fortunately. Everyone's at work repairing them right now. Some were damaged more badly than others, but I don't think it's anything we can't handle.

You'll be joining one of the sixteen ships in the fleet at the end of the week, so I'm sure there will still be a lot of repairs going on when you come in.

Sixteen?! Wow, that's so many! I hope I can help with whatever ship I end up on!

[Right. She supposes that does seem like a lot of ships to most people.]

The Blue Fish... [ she laughs a little. ] That's a cute name.

Does it look like it sounds? [ picturing a spaceship that looks like a fish... ]

[She laughs in return.]

Not quite. Our captain did paint a fish [if you can call that blob a fish] on the side though!

Ah! [ she claps in good cheer. ] That's nice of him! If there's sixteen ships, it must be confusing to find yours...

[ well, she leans back, looking sated. ] This is amazing. It's kind of scary, but I love space!

[Is it possible for someone to be this adorable? Looks like someone else is going to be added to the adoptees of Space Mom.]

I've gone, once! It was, um... [ her cheerfulness dims, just a little. ] It was kind of scary, but my friends and I ended up helping someone who was suffering. I'm really glad we were able to do it, but I hope being in space again means it can be a little more fun!

[Beverly nods sympathetically.]

Space can be scary, and you do have to be careful, but there is so much to learn and see out here!

[she doesn't mean to sound so, uh, dry and sarcastic about that. she's been having a weird week. the gothy teenager yawns, and tries to sound less... uh, unfriendly.]

[ she gives a firm nod. it's almost as if krista's demeanor doesn't bother her at all. her determination falls and a bright smile replaces it. ]

Um, no, not really. They're actually really small. Like, college dorms, but in space.

Oh... [ BIT DISAPPOINTED. ] I'm sure we can make the best of it! Ah, they always talk about how you can decorate them, we can decorate them then!

...Uh, yeah! We totally can. I turned my spare room into a library, so it's not so bad...

[Wow what a time to be brought into the Fleet. Right after a freak attack...]

Oh, hello. Everything's okay now. Besides, if you're new, then you're on the mothership, and you won't be able to get off there to help anyway.

Oh... [ she wilts, like her determination is flagging. ] So I'm stuck here forever? Do I have to do something cool to get on one of the ships?

Oh no! Not forever! You'll eventually get shuffled onto one of the other ships. It just takes a few days. Everyone winds up on the ship you're on when they first come there.

Oh, what a relief!

What ship are you on?

I'm on the SS Blue Fish. There's about... eight other ships or so? I don't know the exact number.

Are there a lot of people on each one?

Not really. There are only about six or seven on mine and I think that's average?

Six times eight... [ she's using her fingers. ]

That's almost 50 people! [ THERE'S NOT EVEN THAT MANY PRECURE ]

Yeah, sounds about right. [Kairi is a little confused as to why this is a big deal...?] You'll only really deal with your crewmates daily, unless you go on the phone a lot.

[Another kid. Well, at least she wasn't on a ship that got attacked. She looks about Hiro's age, maybe a year or two older. She sure seems enthusiastic, though.]

Not so dangerous anymore, it seems, thank Light. [Knock on wood.] Pikari... gaoka? That's a bit of a mouthful.

... Yeah, Light. You know, the opposite of Darkness? [Does nobody else thank Light? Come to think of it, he's heard people say God or Maker, but he's never heard anybody say Light that way. Huh. Interesting.

[He has to laugh a little then.]

Pi-kah-ri-ga-oh-kah. Yeah, I guess it's easier once you know where all the syllables go. It just sounds really long at first.

Uhm... Well... [This is kind of a trick question. Where's home? Radiant Garden, which he hasn't returned to for more than a mission or two in over ten years? Or The World That Never Was, which was more like a prison than anything like home...? Maybe he'll cheat and pick somewhere else entirely: somewhere he would've liked to call home. It's not like she'll know the difference.]

Oh, ah, there was a beach, and a tram that ran through town, and a big clock tower at the train station. Great view from up there, I used to watch the sunset a lot. Of course, it was always sunset, but it never really got old.

You like high places, then? It's a bit scary, don't you think?

[He laughs a bit.]

Yup, it's a pretty nice beach. The surf is pretty gentle--it's a good place to find shells, apparently. Friend of mine used to pick them up a lot. [Come to think of it... he's really not sure why Roxas started picking up shells in the first place. He feels like there was a reason, but... there's something fuzzy about it now. Huh.

[He shakes his head then.]

Nah, high places are great! You can see everything, when you're way up high. It's like maybe your problems are stuck at the bottom and for just a little while you can rise above them.

Mm, I love picking up shells too! It's funny to watch the crabs, don't you think?

[ she mimics the pincers of a crab. ] They move so strangely!

I've never tried that before... it's difficult to find a tall place in space. It's all around you!

I especially like the crabs that have one giant claw and one little claw, they look so lopsided.

Mm, I guess it's kinda hard to find a high spot on the ships, really... Maybe on the catwalks in the cargo bay, but that's about as high as it gets. When we're able to stop on planets and way stations, though, I like to look for a high place to sit, even just for a little while. Helps clear my head.
