See how they glisten
Who: Mantis and All
Broadcast: Yes
Action: Planetside
When: Today
Action
He hobbled more than anything out of the mists. His whole body shook with harsh tremors as he came back into civilized streets and the overwhelming sense of people. Most concerning is that he can’t stop coughing: a dry and raspy noise that rocks through him as each fit comes along. He has to lean against a wall and wait for a particularly bad one to pass.
Slowly, he lifts up one hand and several chained dogtags clink and glitter in the light. There are four in all, and his grip on them is such that his knuckles are almost ghostly white. Then he gasps and turns his head sharply, wincing as some unseen thing comes closer to him. Another coughing fit comes upon him and he tries to stand and keep going. Not much longer, not much longer. He needs to get back to his ship
Broadcast
Mantis is hunched over heavily in the bed. His head bobs as he mutters things to himself. For a moment, it seems as though he isn’t aware of the video feed at all, but he eventually lifts his head up and takes several deep breaths.
“I- I’m in a hospital. Mist diving is… Is not safe.” He coughs suddenly, covering his chest with one arm. “There’s darkness down there. Kept seeing things. Not real things.”
His hand fiddles with several chains looped around his neck. They clang lightly against each other and he counts the dogtags hanging from them one by one.
“Wolf… Raven… These were my teammates. I left them at home when I was brought here. We were in Alaska. Okay. Okay, I’m back. The psychological effects of the mist are irritating. When you’ve had worse psychological breaks than this, the hallucinations are almost laugh…able…”
His gaze focuses sharply on a spot above the camera and he touches his fingertips together on each hand without moving his gaze. “That said, I need to recover. The coughing needs to subside before I get off the planet.”

You don't say.
[You know what at least she's keeping the "I told you so" unspoken. If heavily implied. Like, really heavily implied. Minefields were more subtle.]
Any other lingering effects?

To my credit, I did come back with a prize. Just not a pet like you did.
[Slowly, his body relaxes as the current vision passes him by.]
I uh, keep having hallucinations. There's a kind of certainty I can ground myself with being so far from home. Dead people, mostly. People I knew.

That is for the best. Slightly less chance it will be accidentally eaten.
[Though she said slightly for a reason, Mantis. Keep your new valuables where the ziboson can't reach them.]
They should subside- eventually. I do not know how long, considering the differences between humans and Tetramands. But should any of them become too taxing, pain helps. It won't make them go away, but it will make you focus on something else.
[Leave it to Looma to deal with the hazards of mist exposure in a dubiously helpful manner, and as her Plan A no less. It probably also explains at least some of the reason why she came back so exhausted.]

That thing eats metal? [He tilts his head slightly.] I never even gave much thought to what he eats.
[He manages to straighten up as he listens to her. It's such a weird thing to hear, but it's also advice he can really take to heart. Somewhere under the command and conquer mentality is a hell of a general.]
I appreciate the concern, boss. I've felt much worse than this, in terms of mental health. Give me some time and I will be back to my usual self.

[She's still fond of them- and the runt she's ended up with- but she will absolutely admit they're dumb as rocks. Probably why they're best suited to being beasts of burden or war mounts, rather than anything requiring much more in the way of intelligence.]
Just hope it is by the time we leave the system. I do not know for certain what happens if one is left behind, but given how they safeguard their captives from other misfortunes, I doubt it will be pleasant.

[Another coughing fit starts and he holds out his hand for a glass of water to come floating into it. He sips it carefully.]
This is more like a bad reaction to a psychotropic drug than anything. They've got me on a full body cleanse right now.
I might call this trip worth it. [He points to the chains around his neck.] Only one of these is mine. The others belong to my squad members back home.
