Who: Randolph Lyall and OPEN
Broadcast: Fleetwide
Action: On the SS Blameless and the Iskaulit
When: Sometimes after the crew of the Blameless got curious and opened the first cargo they were entrusted with.

[Broadcast/Action for people on the Blameless]
[Lyall isn't sure what has woken him up. It's still early and anyone who is not on duty is probably still asleep. All that he knows is that it hurts everywhere right now. It even hurts to breathe, his ribs tender and some of them probably broken.
He drags himself out of the bed so he can get to the bathroom and get some water to drink. Even in the low lighting of the bedroom, it is relatively easy to see that he's covered in bruises. He's walking with an obvious limp and there are marks on his back that look suspiciously like some sort of beast used him as a scratch post.
He manages, with some effort, to get to the sink and to gulp down a bit of water, but even that simple effort seems to have robbed him of what little strength he had and he sinks to the floor with a small whimper of pain.
If only he could be unconscious again.]
[Action] SS Blameless / Iskaulit
[If you have met Lyall before, it will be very, very obvious that something is wrong with him.
He is dressed to the nines as he always is, and with his customary suit, very little of the bruises actually show. But the ordinarily discreet werewolf seems to try and be even more inconspicuous than he normally does. He is making himself as small and unobtrusive as possible when out and about. The limp is still there, even if he tries to hide it, and his face doesn't let anything show even though he is pretty much in constant pain.
He is also very, very skittish right now. He is avoiding crowds, and any loud noise is likely to make him jump quite badly.
Aboard the SS Blameless, he will attend to his duties as usual (or attempt to at least, if no one tries to stop him). Otherwise, he will pretty much navigate between the kitchen and Biffy's room, because he still needs his tea.
Aboard the Iskaulit, he will be doing his usually rounds to sniff out new people, although much more slowly. He probably will end up at one of the places that sell alcohol at some point, although since he can't get drunk, any attempt to drown out the hurt will unfortunately be a failure.]

[Crying... gosh. He wouldn't want Biffy to cry either, but it's not something they can control, now can they? Done on this side, Shiro makes a gesture as he speaks to Lyall to turn around to take care of the wounds on his back.]
I hate it when my friends cry too, especially over me. I tried keeping my pain for myself in the past, Lyall. And it doesn't end well. [He pats what is left of his right arm.]

I... do not think I have enough strength right to just stare at the ceiling while I wait for him to wake up, Captain.
[Because what else would be do if he goes back to bed? At least if he's not around, Biffy will be worried, yes, but he'll have a bit of forewarning that something is wrong rather than having it sprung on him.]
The one who did this... He was my Alpha at the time. It's a terrible thing for a pack, when an Alpha goes mad. Biffy is one of the best we've had in a while. And...
[And he loves Lyall, and it tore him up to hear about this the first time, and Lyall just can't think about lying in bed next to him in that state and letting it be the first thing he sees when he wakes up.]

A good point. Take one of the spares room then. I can send Procyon if you want some company until Biffy awakes, but you really need to rest.
[He pays attention to the story and-- ah. A leader gone mad. Yes, that definitely takes its toll on the group. Thinking about the leadership issues his own little family team used to have at home (not exactly the same but close enough) makes him want even more to pass on the lessons he had to learn onto his crew.]
And you want to protect him from the same happening to him. From being affected too. I get it. But he'll also be upset if he doesn't see you taking care of yourself. So at least leave the bathroom and get on the couch when we're done here. [A pause before he adds.] Sorry your previous Alpha did this to you, Lyall. I may not have all the necessary knowledge about your people, but I've seen you with Biffy and I know enough to say you're a good Beta.

I am, aren't I? So I endured this for years so he wouldn't attack the rest of the pack. I made sure to keep them safe from him. And then, when the right conditions were gathered, I had him murdered.
[Were he less confused and in pain, the story probably wouldn't come out this way. But in way Shiro might understand better than most.]
I kept the pack together and safe, and I got them a new Alpha. Because this is what a Beta does. They put the pack first. I did what I had to do and I don't feel sorry for myself. I would do it again if I had to.
[And Biffy knows it, which is why he's vowed never to let that happen.]

I don't feel sorry for myself.
He wishes he had at least one percent of that feeling when it comes to the guilt he carries over his own past actions. But he gets it. He truly does.]
You have nothing to feel ashamed of, Lyall. You're right, you did the right thing. [Lyall probably should've reached out for some help and not endured it alone, but he doesn't need criticism right now, just comfort. Besides, Shiro is in the state he is right now because of not reaching out, so. The hand comes back, but to gently land on the man's shoulder this time, giving it a light squeeze.] Your pack is lucky to have you. Biffy is lucky to have you - a feeling he's expressed multiple times, and I agree with. You don't deserve Atroma bringing your wounds out like this, exposing you like this. You deserve to be happy with your husband-to-be without the past haunting you.

This is such a strange state of mind to be in, like his brain is trying to be in two time periods at once. Rationally, he knows whatever is happening is in the past, and yet it feels like Alessandro's death just happened and he's still in mourning at the same time as having Biffy right there.
Which is really screwing with his head something fierce.]
... What if I told you I didn't do it for the pack?
[It wasn't entirely true. He did protect the pack and keep it together because int he end, they're closer to him than family, and that was his role to do so. But that's far from being the whole story.]

[He sounds honest. Patient. Understanding. Ready to continue this conversation for as long as it needs to be had... or until Biffy wakes up. Whatever happens first.]
It's not like you did it for fun, Lyall. [...right?]
no subject
[Lyall just hides his face in his hand and sighs.]
It was revenge. Pure and simple. If I had had the strength, I would have killed him myself, but...
[But as the many wounds attest, he definitely wasn't strong enough.]

You were strong, Lyall. You were strong to deal with his abuse for the sake of the pack, and to make the right choice-- [Yes, he thinks it's the right thing.] --when the time came. So I stand for what I said: you have nothing to feel ashamed of.
