[ Here's Escha, standing in the middle of the Wonderduck lab! She's got a long band of bright red ribbon in her hands, and she looks excited! Very excited! ... Too excited, maybe - is she vibrating? We may never know for certain. ]

Ah! Hello everyone! [ Escha is talking incredibly fast - her words are practically running together.] We found out a lot of things about the ribbons, because we were doing a bunch of things to them, like putting them through stress, and fire tests, and examining them under lenses, and trying to break down their components-- Ahh, sorry! I got carried away again. But anyway, we wanted to tell you all what we found!

Turns out, they're flame resistant! Um, mostly. I mean, it takes a lot for the to catch fire. Which you wouldn't expect from fabric! So there's got to be more to it than just that, right? Well, that's what we thought, too! And we kept looking into it! And we found out some other amazing stuff!!

"That's right!"

[And just like that, two rubber-clad arms reach to pluck the camera from above, bringing us to the easily recognisable 'face' of Dr. Flug... What is somewhat less recognizable is the fact that he appears to be upside down. He too is talking rather expediently, but well, that's just Flug.]

"And not just fire, electricity In particular! This fabric has a peculiar reaction to electrical currants. Observe!"

[On cue, we cut a piece of the ribbon stretched above an almost taser-like device that flashes brightly, little flashes of light sparking in brilliant patterns.]

"If Atroma doesn't brand us for thieving, I have the mind to test some of these in a few inventions. It could be very useful to have a highly dura--" [He pans to an still smoldering piece of burnt ribbon from an early test.] "MOSTLY durable fabric to use in place of what would usually be a metal alloy's job."

[ She laughs a little, sheepishly, at the ultra-fried ribbon... but then it's back to excitement as she stands on her tip-toes, so the camera catches the very top of her head! ]

I bet we could all do some amazing things with these! They'd be perfect for conducting bridges!

“Or extending battery life--!”

OOC: The ribbon investigating has begun! Want in? We already have Lab Support and Engineer augments covered. Help us investigate-- if you can get a word in! Between Escha's hyperactivity glitch and Flug's misbehaving gravity there may be some issues. Feel free to specify if you want anyone in particular, otherwise you may get either or both (Possibly at the same time!). Threadjacks welcome~

It reminds me of technology back home. These ribbons, they are conductive wires for routing electricity? Why would we be in such abundant supply of such things? There must be a purpose.

[Bird man or no, partial amnesia or no, Mantis is a nosy parker who will look for any explanation he can in the weirdest of places. His wings are spread wide from his back as he picks at the black feathers.]

Perhaps the question of who they are for is more pressing than what they are for.

"Companies do tend to buy things in bulk-- though I do agree with you! Insight on who's delivery we've intercepted is just as important as their cargo. It hardly appears marketed as something nefarious, but the place we picked it from was hardly reputable itself."

[So who can say.]

"I don't believe I've seen you around before, sir."

Hmm. Could be an off the books order for a company of some kind. If they are buying it through quasi-legal channels, it means they needed to minimize the paper trail linking them with the product.

[He hisses as he pulls out a feather with a bit of red on one end.]

I believe I am new here. The wings are new, even for me. I'm already finding ones that aren't growing correctly.

[Death is looking a bit more cat sized these days. Not for lack of effort. He's currently being sat upon by his kitten.]

I HAD NOTICED THEY SEEMED A BIT ODD FOR DECORATIONS, BUT YOU TWO SEEM TO HAVE DISCERNED THE TRUTH ABOUT THEM. HOW WOULD SUCH RIBBONS BE USED IN MACHINES?

"Muerte-cito!"

[Yeah going to ignore that question in favor of gaping because why does Death look like this?]

"What happened?! You're--"

THE ACCEPTED TERM SEEMS TO BE "GLITCH". I WOKE UP TO POPPY CURLED UP AROUND ME RATHER THAN ON ME.

[He's still scratching her cute little ears. Whoooo's a good kitty? It's Poppy!]

IS MUERTE A WORD FOR DEATH? IT'S A RATHER NICE ONE.

"Oh! I had forgotten our speech is run through a translator. Must be part of the glitches. Err yes, i-it's Spanish. I uh, I tend to use a lot of nicknames. Sometimes. Sorry. Habit. As for the other bit..."

[Flug can't help but laugh, despite his embarrassment. ~~-cito in some cases translates to 'little'.~~]

"Well, in this case, it's rather fitting. H-has it been, uh, hard to get around like that?"

MY USUAL NICKNAMES COME FROM LOCAL LANGUAGES, ALTHOUGH MY ASSOCIATES CALL ME "MORT". THAT PARTICULAR TRANSLATION IS QUIRMIAN.

[Poppy rolls onto her side, allowing him to rub her belly.]

NOT PARTICULARLY. I MAY NOT GET THERE AS QUICKLY AS I WOULD LIKE, BUT I HAVE POPPY AND SHE IS QUITE THE GIFTED CLIMBER.

"Quirmian. Heh. I'm not familiar with that one, it sounds like it shares roots to some of my world's language families. Interesting."

[okay, despite still feeling a little salty you chose a cat over helping him get home, he can't deny that's freaking precious.]

"Seems so. How is she ah, acclimating? No issues suddenly traveling the stars, as a feline?"

TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THERE ARE MANY LANGUAGES THAT SHARE ROOTS IN OLDER ONES REGARDLESS OF WHERE ONE GOES. IT MIGHT BE THAT WE HAVE SHARED LANGUAGES WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING.

[Death can only help so much when there is a life to protect. It's an odd habit he picked up after trying the whole parenthood thing and being promoted to grandparent.]

NONE THAT I CAN TELL. SHE HAS FOUND HER FAVORITE SPOTS TO SLEEP, TO EXPLORE, ALTHOUGH SHE TAKES A CERTAIN DELIGHT IN TRYING TO CATCH MY ROBES IN HER CLAWS. I BELIEVE IT IS THE HUNTING INSTINCT INHERENT TO HER SPECIES.

That's interesting. [Very. Vash wants to know more.] Has there been any sort of pattern with the blinking lights?

"Pattern?"

[Flug tilts his head but nevertheless tries to... swim over to the electric experiment. It is harder than it looks, but after kicking the wall to propel himself, he powers the device back on to give Vash a closer look.]

"It consistently gives the same results, but as far as I am concerned, none of the physics here work in a manner I am familiar with."

"The same result every time? If you shock a different ribbon does it also flash in the same pattern or a different one?" [Vash is laser focused at the moment. Wanting to know more about what they were carting.] "Or what if you shock a different ribbon, but in the same colour?"

[ Time for Escha to chime in! Super fast. Still. fdsjkl ]

We can test that really quick! We can pass current through all kinds of ribbons and start taking notes on exactly what kind of path we see! Would you like to come over and watch with us, or just stay on the line?

[ beat. ... ... and then a little quieter, almost like she's just talking to herself, but still just as fast: ]

Hmm, is it still considered "on the line" with communicators like these? We didn't have anything this advanced back home, so I'm a little confused...

I would like to come around and see if that's alright. [And then he suddenly remembers something.]

Ah, although I have been hiccuping a lot lately. As long as you don't think that would bother you at all.

Or you know... possibly bubbles getting in the way as well. [Because you know that age old saying hiccups = bubbles.] If that won't bother your findings then I could be over in a few minutes.

"An extra pair of arms wouldn't go amiss. Provided your movements aren't too impaired."

[As much as Demencia's antics made Flug paranoid about strangers entering the lab, he can't exactly reach much at the moment and this current space isn't exactly his own anyway. There isn't much harm.]

"Your crew also opened your box, didn't they? Bringing a few samples of your own supply might be useful."

What? Opened? That's crazy talk. We didn't--hic! [Ooh! Look at those cute little bubbles that float out of his mouth as he hiccups.]

I'll, ah, bring some over. Hic!

[ Escha can't help but giggle quietly behind one hand, but she smiles kindly at Vash and nods. ]

Thank you! We're in my lab on the Wonderduck. Come on over! --Oh! I can make us all some tea! And maybe an apple tart really quick! I should get that started!

[ aaaand off-camera she goes to alchemy up some tea and baked goods. Oops. Glitches are a heck of a thing... ]

"EH You plan to make all that?!--"

[Is all that is yelled in the background before the feed cuts short, but needless to say Flug is ready for Vash when he arrives. The second the blonde clears the doorway he'll find a pair of long yellow rubber gloves much like the Doctor's own dangled from above.]

"You'll be wanting these. Particularly if you're more... prone to shock than usual."

[I mean, he assumes you might be with that whole issue you appear to have developed.]

"These hiccups are a recent development?"

[Did she say apple tart? Hell yes. He was totally coming over for the food. Oh, and those ribbon things or whatever... APPLE TART!!!

Vash is a bit surprised when the gloves dangle in his face. Not because he was being offered gloves, but the angle that they come from. He takes them without complaint and starts to pull them on.] Thanks. Brand new. And did I hear something about apple tart?

[He speaks so fast and with such excitement that he doesn't have time to hiccup.]

[ She did say apple tart!! And while Flug is handing over those gloves, she's putting the finishing dollop of whipped cream on top of a very delicious looking apple tart that she very quickly made with alchemy! In fact, her (very large) cauldron in the corner still has a fire lit under it and is very gently letting off some steam from whatever concoction is apparently still inside~ She beams and waves enthusiastically as Vash enters the lab. ]

Hi! Yes! You did!

[ she points to the finished tart, and the tea set (with three cups!) right beside it. ]

We can have a snack while we talk about potential experiments, if you guys want to?

Yes please! [Vash completely forgets about those gloves. Shoving them into his pocket to run over to where he can have tea and snacks.] It looks delicious!

"Yes, yes, fine."

[The doctor answers with slight flippancy. He never did enjoy when basic needs get in the way of progress but he knows it can't be helped. It is delicious, he'll give her that. So much so that he can't contain a pleased noise when he slips a forkful under his bag. Now if only he can keep from spilling it.]

"You mentioned patterns, why patterns?

"Well, I suppose I was thinking maybe they could possibly have some sort of message or code to them. If we could find a pattern then it should be easier to figure that out.

Of course, if it's just random, then it may just be random." Vash shrugs as he can't be sure at this point. "Just a theory."

[ She slides Vash a piece of the tart while he talks, and humms thoughtfully when he mentions patterns. ]

Well, it might be just a theory, but it's a perfectly good one! I think we should look for that. When we subject them to current, let's turn it down just a little and try to tack it.

But... if it is code, or a message, that's a lot of ribbon to write a message onto...

[ While she's thinking, she might as well have a bite of that tart, right~? omnomnom ♥ ]

[Vash wastes no time at all to start shoveling that tart into his mouth.]

Yes, it is a lot of ribbon. Maybe it's meant to go to lots of different places? We once were roped into delivering a bunch round balls that reminded a lot of people of gumballs. They ended up being used to help get a terraformer working again that we came across.

Maybe these ribbons are something similar? [Hopefully no one is insulted that he's talking with a full mouth. It just means he's enjoying the tart too much to stop eating.]

[ Not insulted at all! She's totally used to it. Certain friends back home tend to do the same thing... ]

Oh! I heard a little bit about that! You were in the fleet when it happened? It sounds like the gumballs came in handy for people who really needed it! [ She smiles. She likes happy endings! ]

You know... I was a little conflicted about taking these ribbons out of the crates at first. But now, if they might really help someone out there, I think maybe we should keep a few. Just in case.

Mmmph! [Vash nods vigorously in confirmation. Mouth too full of tart to answer. Thankfully he swallows before continuing.] Yeah, I was. I've actually been here since the very start of this cycle.

I'm hoping our gracious hosts won't notice if we keep a couple ribbons for ourselves. I mean, we are carting them around for them. They could consider it a type of payment, right? [Vash quickly finishes off the last of his tart with a happy sigh.] Ahhhh! That was delicious!

Oh my gosh, really? That's so long...!

[ She beams when he finishes the tart and compliments it, blushing just a little. ]

I'm really glad you liked it, mister-- uhm... [ !!!! ] Ah! How rude of me, I didn't even get your name! Or introduce myself! I'm sorry, I don't know what's going on with me today, I've been just all over the place and I feel like my mind is running incredibly fast and--

[ Oh good lord. You might want to stop her. ]

[Why stop her? Vash grins, clearly amused by her ramblings and not at all troubled by it. He's suspecting a glitch when she mentions that this energy is something that started up today.

Then again, maybe she is always like this? Hard to tell sometimes.] Well, if you running around makes such great tarts I don't see why you don't do it more often!

[ She does giggle at that, and shakes her head. ]

Honestly, I make sweets even when I'm not running around so much... You'll just have to keep coming back, I guess! I always like sharing!

A-And my name is Escha! You know, by the way. [ She beams, and gives a polite bow! -- as well as one can while sitting, but eh~ it works. ] Nice to properly meet you.

Oh, if that's the case then I'll have to keep coming over every day! [Careful, he really might!]

You can call me Vash. It's great to meet you as well. Hopefully together we can make something out of all these weird ribbons.

Ah! Then I'll try to keep up! [ She can add "make another baked thing" to her daily list of Way Too Much To Do, it's fine she's fine she's a workaholic it's cool ]

I hope we can do something with them! Even if it's just learning what they really are... There's no way they'd keep something just because it's a bunch of pretty colors. I'd love to actually make them useful, especially if it helps someone.
