Right. So...

I'm not so good at this sort of thing - well, not the jerry-rigging solutions with base tech, that's basically the thing I'm the best at - but this asking for help to do that out of the kindness of my heart or something bit...

Anyway, I was thinking...

You know how the locals are super nice and basically doing everything they can to make us feel welcome on their frozen bit of space? Well, part of what I've been doing while I'm here is taking a look at their heating systems. Plenty of work here to help 'em out for those who need it.

But given the level of tech here, well, they could probably do with a bit of an upgrade right? But we gotta do it a way that is easy for them to maintain and doesn't intrude with their culture. So... what if some of us egghead types put our craniums together and used some of our spare parts to come up with something to leave these people in a better spot than they were when we arrived?

Like, give their heating system an upgrade so it uses fewer resources, lasts longer, is more effective, something along those lines... you all get what I'm putting out there right?

[He scratches his head, unsure if that makes any sense at all]

I'm just sayin,' it'd be nice to help some of these folks with an everyday sort of thing rather than when it's all doom and gloom, right? Seems like every planet we've been to lately has had some kind of messed up catastrophe .... Well, maybe not every planet, but enough of 'em. We could do a thing for a nice, normal, everyday issue while we're here instead.

I'd love to help in any way. I don't necessarily know much about the kinds of heating systems they have here specifically, but I've helped out with similar sort of things back home. Oh, and I'm an alchemist, so if you need any special parts or materials created or replicated, I can definitely do that!

Oh yeah! To be honest, I'm new to things like magic and alchemy. Do you have a way of helping keep things heated with that skill?

Hmmm, I've made things before that either retained heat really well or generated heat, so I'm sure if I find the right sort of combination of things, I could make that happen!

[Which he is. Tyrion already has his tool box at the ready.]

Where shall I meet you so we can get to work on designs?

Oh, hearing you say stuff like that gets me all tingly, Tyrion.

Let's meet in town square? Somewhere public like that, so we can check out their infrastructure with plans in mind.

Don't let Jim hear you say that. He is insanely jealous over whom I make tingly.

[And when Tyrion shows up, Gil is indeed waiting for him. He even has some warm drinks for them both, given the whole having to be out in the cold thing.]

[Which is good, because Tyrion is so bundled up he looks like he is swaddled. He hums his pleasure at the warm beverage, sipping it immediately.]

Right, to business now that I can feel my fingers again ... what were you considering?

[He scans the area around them.] I was thinking perhaps wind turbines? To give them a greater energy output for their heating needs.

I agree. I think wind or solar is the way to go. It's not too complicated and the tech can be pretty self-sustaining.

You know, back in Andromeda there was a planet with sulfur in the water. You couldn't drink it without proper filtration. The whole place was filled with pirates looking to hide. They used solar power to keep the filters up and running, but raiders would keep showing up to scavenge the tech.

[Tyrion nodded as he took out his device to start putting together some design ideas -- but then he stopped to look at Gil for a moment. One eyebrow raised.]

...are you saying we should make the wind turbines defendable against attack?

I'm saying we should make sure they can easily replace the parts in case things wear down or get damaged. Weather does just as much work as raiders.

Well, that makes a great deal more sense, I must say. [Tyrion's lips twitch up at the corner.]

You deal a lot with snow back home?

[3am is a fine time to be posting, it's like werewolf mid-afternoon, what are you talking about?]

I would be interested in helping, but I unfortunately can only do so at night. Would that be a problem?

Not at all. That way we could take the set up in shifts and get started on teaching the locals how to use it.

I haven't seen what ind of energy they're using. It seems fire and steam at least are well known, but I am unsure about electricity.

Yeah. I was taking a look at some of their tech, so we gotta make sure we do something that won't be totally a shock for them to use.

... Ah yes. Very droll.

[Actually that pun was sort of atrocious, but Lyall is too polite to say so out loud.]

Should we focus our efforts on a few small settlements that may be out of the way of energy sources? or the bigger city?

[Gil knows it was terrible. You only follow up terrible puns with a 'get it?' Otherwise, they stand on their own.]

I would say the city because it has the most people and the most resources, though maybe if we leave some knowledge behind we can get them throughout the planet too.
