So it seems that not everything is as it was when we went into the calibrations. Of course we have added crew members to various ships and I would like to welcome them.

It is also regrettable that the Blameless has lost their previous captain as I have been promoted to the position. I hope though that he is well.

[For the first part after returning, Ulaz spends a great deal of time on the Blameless almost as if nothing has happened, taking over the captain's positions. But his crew will notice that at least initially, he is spending more time sitting in the dining room.

It is also likely that on the first evening, the crew and anyone who might be visiting will notice a random bottle of beer sitting in front of the door to the captain's room. It's full and unopened and just... there. If it gets removed, eventually another will appear in its place later in the evening.

The second day, the one that was there last is removed by Ulaz and another one doesn't replace it.

During this time, he can also be found on the Iskaulit as well, doing his usual training.

[The first evening, as soon as the sun has properly set and it has been given at least what he considers a decent amount of time, Ulaz heads to Biffy and Lyall's room. He pauses at the door for a moment and then knocks]

[Biffy has been able to smell the bad news honestly. The lack of Shiro among the crew. It's sobering after all they've endured in the last month and he isn't expecting to hear a knock at his door as he makes sure everything is still in order in their room.

Going to it, he knows who it is right away and nods a greeting and offers a smile.]

Good evening, Ulaz. Is there something I can help you with?

[Well that news certainly gets Kaname's attention.]

Shiro's left? [Huh.] I'm sure he'd feel the ship is left in capable hands.

[It was probably pretty easy for Biffy to tell. Their ship was lacking a familiar smell, familiar face, familiar voice.

He's also not surprised Biffy knew it was him. He's rarely surprised by what Biffy can and cannot know just based on his werewolf senses]

In a way. It is more if you are interested in something. As you know, I am now the captain of the Blameless and we are without a First Mate. I wanted to see if you would apply for the position.

He has as unfortunate as that is to say.

Thank you. I would hope he felt so as well.

[His blue eyes widen in surprise. That really isn't at all what he was expecting this to be about. Though, he can understand why he would wish to come to him. They are close and Ulaz is aware of his leadership abilities. Really it's quite the practical way of handling things. Besides, it's better for a leader to have a second in command as it were.

And the rest of him? Is truly just touched that Ulaz would ask him.]

You would like me to apply for the position?

[Ulaz is very much aware of Biffy's leadership abilities. Maybe not as much first hand, but he has heard such things from Lyall and from the vampire on the other ship though Ulaz doubts either would ever say a negative word about Biffy, either because of bias or because there's nothing to say]

Yes, I would like for you to apply for the First Mate position.

[The loss of Shiro is a blow in many ways, not just purely professional. He did notice the beer bottle, but figured it was some sort of tribute, something private, and didn't touch it.

The evening of the second day, he comes into the dining room, wordlessly brews some tea and then puts a cup at Ulaz's elbow and sits down with his own.]

[Keith was on the Blameless to confirm his hunch about Shiro shortly after the attack on the Marsiva. He had gone over to see if he could grab any pictures before they disappeared, but everything of Shiro's was gone already. He leaned against the wall just outside the Captain's room, looking disappointed.]

[In a way, it was a tribute. The date of their return almost coincided with Shiro's birthday so it seemed appropriate to have something there even if Shiro wasn't going to actually see it. It made Ulaz feel better.

He's sitting quietly in the dining room when Lyall comes in. He's aware enough to nod in greeting, but he's still lost in thought. That is until Lyall comes over and sets a cup of tea beside him before joining him]

[Ulaz is still wandering the halls, trying to make sure everything is as it should be and accepting the fact that this was not temporary - he was taking over for Shiro - when he spotted a familiar face just outside the Captain's room. Technically his room now, but he wasn't going to take it right away. In a few days he would, but it seemed appropriate to leave it for a few days.

He walked over to Keith]

Unfortunately our hunches were correct.

I would be honored to.

[He reaches forward to touch the other man's arm. He knows this isn't going to be easy to lose someone you care about. But he can at least support the man.]

I will go fill out the paperwork then come find you when it's done. It likely won't go through right away but I can at least come help you look over the ship.

[Hmmmm...so he's lost someone he cares about. That alone is enough reason to reach out to him.]

Are you alright, Ulaz?

[As Biffy puts his hand on his arm, he moves his hand to touch Biffy's. He appreciates the gesture. He will miss Shiro and so soon, it's still a lot to take in]

Sounds good. I'm sure it will take a few days, but there's no reason you can't start.

[He has the position as far as Ulaz is concerned. Granted he doesn't officially make that call, but he can't see why Biffy wouldn't get it]

[Yep, he has lost someone that he cares about. It's hard to completely describe because even if he'd been teased about liking Shiro, it had never gone to anything more]

I will be fine. Right now it is still a lot to take in.

Of course. I will come find you when I am done.

[Since he has to fill out the paperwork and it will take at least a few minutes. But it won't be hard to find Ulaz after that. Not with a nose like his.]

If you see Lyall before I do, would you mind letting him know?

Would you like some company?

Yeah.

[Keith had left the bottle of beer alone. He figured there was a reason for it.]

There's nothing in there. It was like he was never here.

[That was the part that was the hardest.]

I would congratulate you on the promotion, but it doesn't sound quite exactly appropriate for the occasion.

[Lyall has seen announcements for people disappearing before. If anything, he is used to the people he knows disappearing or dying before him. But it still stings.]

I heard you asked Biffy to take your post as First Mate.

Of course. If I see Lyall, I will let him know that I have asked you.

[And he won’t keep Biffy from going off to fill out the paperwork, going off to do something else, waiting for Biffy to catch up with him]

I would like some company. It’s just strange on the ship right now. Perhaps at the dojo?

[It is there for a reason. Ulaz is being randomly sappy. Thank you for not disturbing his personal tribute]

I noticed. The first thing I realized when getting back was that Procyon was missing.

[He sighed. He’d liked that dog]

I suppose I won’t need the treats that were stashed in my desk for him anymore. If you would like to take them for Kosmo, you are welcome to them.

It is a bit bittersweet at the moment.

[He knows it will eventually change with time, but right now, everything still rather raw and he wishes that he didn’t have the position in this way]

I did. I think he will be able to handle to position well.

[Procyon... Keith sighed.]

Yeah.

[He considered the offer.]

Well, I can see if he'd like them. [It seemed wasteful to toss them out... even if it felt a little weird to take them.]

[Once he's done, he comes to find Ulaz, making his footsteps audible so he won't startle him at his approach.]
