Action | Who needs a gosh dang drink??

Tony would probably be proud of Steve, if he were able to see him right now. He'd slap his back and welcome him back to the world of inebriation while ordering shots for everyone in the bar to commemorate the day. As it is, though, Tony isn't here and, without him, there's not a damn person who would feel proud in this entire bar. That's part of it's charm.

Steve sighs and swallows his fourth drink. It's strong and alien and somehow enough to give him a strong buzz but not enough to really get him drunk. Not yet, at least. But he's not a quitter, so bottom's up! He hisses a little at the burn of it and feels, not for the first time, like he was being a coward. He saw some stuff in those rooms, sure. But other people had it so much worse. Saw so much more. He should really be thankful, actually.

But he's not. And this is a 30's approved way of getting over trauma. There were worse ways of coping, he was sure. So for now he's just going to stay in his seat and keep ordering drinks until that elusive drunken state hits him once more.

Should only take another hour or three.

No one could blame Steve for starting. He'd messaged his friends about fifteen minutes ago, telling them to meet him at the bar for some drinks. But just sitting here, waiting? It was done better with a drink in hand to look social, at least. And it's not like that one is going to be his last. No, after Calibrations he can imagine himself coming over here quite often. He can imagine all of them coming here quite often, in fact. But maybe tonight (today? Space was hard to judge) would help take some of the sting off. Or at least some of the awkwardness.

But it wasn't as though they <i>chose</i> to share all of that. Loki, Steve is sure, would have preferred to keep his death to himself. And Thor? I am sure half of those memories were things he'd rather not have replayed over and over again. And <i>Hux</i>. God... That was just what Steve knew of. Who knew what other people had put his friends through? What they'd been through themselves?

Steve preemptively orders another drink for whoever shows up first. Whoever it was, he's sure they won't say no. Not now.

[Steve looks over and appraises the blonde stranger beside him. He hasn't seen him before but that means nothing in this strange place.

The fact that he orders tea at a bar strikes Steve as strange but not in a troubling way. His head tilts, interested and inebriated.]

It's not hurting.

[Lyall is very unassuming, almost otherworldly so. He makes a point of it, actually.]

No, I suppose not. You can appreciate the taste at the very least.

[He gets his tea, adds cream and sugar to his taste and takes a sip.]

Was it your first time with those.... whatever people want to call them?

[Steve will never get used to how the people who've been here for over a year seem to take these Calibrations with stride. It's not just the intrusion into his mind but the constant repetition of awful memories that gets to Steve.]

Yeah. Yeah, first time that I can remember, at least. Apparently I've been here before.

[Well, actually....]

Ah. It was a first for me as well.

[And yet, here he looks cool as a cucumber sipping his tea.]

I would join in the drinking, but I cannot actually get drunk with those. [he tips his head towards the bottles behind the bar.] I might as well leave it to those who can.

[That draws confusion from Steve. But maybe some people just took it all much better than he did. Not unbelievable.]

Huh. And, yeah. It takes a lot more for me to get drunk than an average person, too. I think I could drink half the bar and only get drunk for about a half hour before it processed out. Problems of being a super soldier, I guess.

[Which brings the question.]

Same for you? Super constitution?

[He's never heard that before, but he can indeed tell from the smell that the man doesn't seem drunk.]

Well... In a manner of speaking. I am a werewolf.

[Yeah. Okay. That...isn't what he's expecting.]

I know some worlds believe werewolves to be entirely fictional, but most worlds do appear familiar with the stories at the very least. Full moon turning you into a beast, and this whole sort of thing.

[Yes, yes, the 5'4" gentleman in a three-piece suit sitting next to you drinking his tea in the most proper British way is actually a werewolf, Steve. At least now you seem distracted from whatever you were brooding about.

And to make a long story short, my body is, essentially, dead, so no more getting drunk, unless it is with liberal quantities of alcoholic liquids decidedly unfit for human consumption. Formaldehyde does work if you get enough of it, but I do not recommend it for the taste.

[Well. This is pretty interesting. Steve's not even sure what questions he wants to ask first because he has a million.]

So. How does that work in space? Are you just on a schedule or do you have to wait till we're on a planet with a moon?

As weird as it wounds, the schedule seems to be the same one we were following on Earth. A friend here helped us to calculate it and it appears to be accurate. I am not sure how that works, but it does.

We have customized the cargo hold on our ship so we can be confined during full moon, and so far no accidents.

[Also, yes, he said 'we'. As in, not just him.]

Huh. Not the answer he was expecting.

So it works on a cycle. That's pretty interesting, actually. [He's still looking at the man a bit stunned and unsure, of course. But he was a gentleman and he could be polite.]

How many werewolves are there, here?

Two that I am aware of, myself and my Pack's Alpha. We are both on the same ship and use the same confinement methods, so everything is safe. We have been here almost a year with no incident.

[And they would be devastated if there were any.]

From your reaction I am thinking your world has stories of werewolves, but the actual thing does not... exist? That people are aware of at least.

Honestly, I have no idea what does or doesn't exist anymore. [He works with a man who turns into a giant green creature. Next to that a werewolf seems average weird. Not super weird.]

But yeah. As you said,. It that I'm aware of.

[He's very average weird, Steve. Very average in general, to be honest.]

You said you were a super soldier... does that mean that humans' taste for experimenting on themselves have somehow managed to produce actual results?

In my universe, yeah. They actually figured it out in the 1940's. But just this one guy who...sadly passed.

[Steve still wonders what could have happened if he'd been saved.]

Some other people too. It's not as crazy in my universe, honestly. A lot of people are augmented somehow.

I do wonder if it is a good or a bad thing. But human curiosity knows no bounds.

Did you at least volunteer for it?

[He's heard too many tales... he's been captured a few times himself although thankfully it never got to the experimentation stage before he was freed.]

My world has scientists who tend to be a little too... adventurous with experimenting on supernaturals to augment themselves, and they rarely think asking for consent or cooperation is all that important.

Yeah. I volunteered. I knew what I was signing up for. [The idea that others don't is horrifying. Steve doesn't even want to know what kind of experimentation is done in this man's world. It sounds horrifying.]

Doesn't anyone try to stop them or help the victims in your world?

We stop them when we find out. We have official representation in the British Empire and are considered members of society. We are expected to respect certains standards of decency when interacting with humans and they must do the same. However, not all countries are so progressive. In fact, if you'll allow me the little jab, the Americas are shockingly backwards in that regard.

[He heard the accent.]

People are well aware that attacking a vampire or a werewolf is against the law, so they don't do it openly. I used to work for the Bureau of Unnatural Registry. We investigate crimes against supernaturals or committed by them, with official sanction.

[Steve perks up hearing this. This bureau sounds a bit like SHIELD except probably not infiltrated by HYDRA. He smiles, suddenly very glad to be talking with this man beside him.]

Sounds like you're doing good work. At home I protect humans from supernatural beings just because the attacking usually goes the other way around. Seems to me we're in a similar line of business.

[He holds his glass up to clink with the teacup.] Do you have anyone from your team here with you?

[Lyall gives a half smile at the clink.]

I haven't worked with them in about twenty years now. I had to leave due to... personal circumstances. And no, no one from the BUR is here, although their current head is a member of my pack. As of now, my only responsibility are pack. I leave the rest to the younger ones.

Do you have many supernatural attacks, then? Werewolves and vampires?

[He has questions about the whole 'pack' thing but he puts them on pause in order to answer what was asked.] More like aliens. But some have powers that are like magic. Others are just stronger or faster than normal humans. Either way, they come to destroy human life and we have to stop that. Sometimes I feel like I'd rather have werewolves and vampires. At least they were human once.

They were humans, yes, but not all of them were very nice humans even prior to being turned. And not very nice humans do not make nice werewolves or vampires.

[Not to mention, immortality does make some people a little funny in the head after a while.]

[This world sounds interesting. Steve can't help but be fascinated at what sounds like a horror movie come to life.]

I can see how that would be true. Power doesn't usually improve people if they were bad to start. [Just like his serum.]

Are any of those ones here?

[Ah. That's a difficult question, Steve.]

... The worst specimen I have had the displeasure of crossing paths with are not, no. But if I am to be perfectly honest, I am not sure I would call myself a very nice person.

Immortality... changes your priorities. We do have a sense of right and wrong, but we are also more easily able to ignore it.

I am the Beta of my werewolf pack, and it is my duty to keep the pack together. By any means possible. And I have had to do just that several times in the past, and I am sure that some people would tell you my methods caused them much pain. I freely acknowledge it, and I have made amends whenever I could. But I would still do it again exactly the same way if the occasion arose again.

[What is it about Steve that seems to get him all the morally ambivalent people, here? He frowns a little but the explanation is actually pretty easy to understand. Immortality would put things into a different view. His own serum made his lifeline one that was difficult to predict. He can understand how that makes one take a step back and reassess life.]

I can understand protecting those you love. I hurt people too, doing that. And I'd do it again.

[He exhales.]
