They're...they are trying to help but they don't know how. [She shrugs helplessly.] And I don't know what I want.

[Well, she knows exactly what would make her feel better - the Atroma bringing Pietro here - but she can't make it happen and neither can anyone else.]

But I think...I think I may not be happy whatever I do, but if I stayed away we would all be upset.

[He makes a soft noise at that, something almost like a snort. Bucky knows very well what it's like to have people trying to "help."] Their help might be more to make themselves feel better, what they think you need when all you really want is to be left alone.

[He's not going to push to ask why though. That's far too intrusive, especially when they've only just met.]

[Well that sounds awfully specific. Sounds like Bucky's been having his own problems, and it's not hard to imagine why. Sometimes people talk about "getting better" like there's a better to get to, like it's possible to go back to the person you once were.

Those people usually mean well, but they just don't get it.]

[She shrugs. Crying at her own party is still not out of the question.]

And there is ice cream.

[Because sometimes it's easier to focus on the inane little things and not the larger, more troublesome concerns. And because she's already admitted she'd rather not attend a party in her honor; it seems cruel to throw the could-have-beens in her face.]

That has to be a step up from the protein gels, don't you think?

Wouldn't it be funny if they were made from the protein gels?
