Hey there, fleeter friends, let me pick your brain for a few minutes, get those creative juices flowing.

If you could have any kind of magical weapon, armor, or a fancy artifact- what would it be, and what could it do? The theoretical sky is the limit, here, this is just a fun thought experiment.

[Toooootally theoretical. She's not fishing for new stuff to work on, no sir.

Lup can be found easily enough in person as needed, either in her room or in the kitchen on the Heron, or messing around in the smithy onboard the Iskaulit. It's project time.]

[Lup is standing in front of a chalkboard, the entire surface of it covered in runes, elvish script, arcane circles, and a couple of rough sketches in the center. One is of a wand, another a gloved hand, and the third looks sort of like the fleet guns that come with security rooms. There are notes and annotations around all three. She glances over her shoulder at the sound of his voice.]

Oh yeah? What good authority has been spreading such rumours about me?

[Her tone is mildly teasing; her callout had been vague but not especially subtle, if you stopped to think about it. She pauses as she scans him up and down, and then-.]

Holy shit, that's one baller-looking staff, my dude.

A rocket launcher with target-seeking cluster bombs, an Arc energy conductor that'll junction with my syanpses to keep my abilities going longer, a transmat device that will let me store all my stuff in my room but summon it when I need it, and a programmable image projector to make targets for the shooting range I'm working on.

Only the highest of compliments, I assure you, madame. [ Dorian quirks an eyebrow, smiling wryly. ] Isn't it just? It's a shame, the adjective used most is 'creepy'. However, as wonderful a tool as it is, there is always room for improvement, is there not?

Oh, absolutely. Anything can be improved, up to a point. Can I see it?

[She gestures towards it, genuinely intrigued. Does it feel magical already?]

That's one hell of a wishlist. A lot of that sounds more technology than magic, though. Shouldn't you be looking for an engineer instead? I am but a simple wizard!

Alright. Oh, hold on, actually...

[ Since he's in his room, he just steps away from the camera, then comes back with the item he was talking about. He holds it up to the camera, so Lup can see a small carving of a whale out of what appears to be soapstone. It's warm grey and it has golden flecks throughout, and there seems to be a very faint golden glow coming from the item. ]

Okay, now watch this. [ He steps farther away from the camera so she can get a good look. Then he touches the carving and closes his eyes, and in a few seconds a glowing golden whale made of spirit energy appears out of thin air. It's a little bigger than a dog (actually Jim's German Sheppard is nearby enough to serve as comparison), and it floats on air and moves as though it's in water. ]

I got it back in Riverview, that's where I was before I came here. Back there, it could be as big as a real whale, but this is as big as it can get here.

Well, there's a couple conditions. There's a limit on how much stuff you can transport if you want it all together, and how big those things are. It has to be able to fit inside a specific vessel, otherwise it's a no-go. And those items have to stay in that vessel, you can't just have 'em lying around on a shelf or in your closet.

Also, it's hella expensive.

[Lup leans in to get a closer look at the screen, watching as the whale floats around a bit. Yep, it's pretty cute.]

I work by drawing out the natural aether from what's around me. Sometimes, simple is for the best.

Might I ask you to get one for me? I seem to be stranded on the Marsiva for the time being.

Oh gods, fuck that place.

[Being stuck there for like a month was more than enough, no thank you. But it does draw out a bit of sympathy, which is not always easy for her.]

Yeah, sure, I can find you a stick. Got any specifics? Size, weight, general shape? I know, simple is best, but that doesn't mean you can't pick the finer details. And if you want something basic you're deffo asking the wrong person.

By all means. [ He offers the staff to her. It is very magical and has crazy stats. ]

[She accepts it and holds it out in front of herself, taking in all the details, and taps into her artificing skills; her eyes develop a slight silver sheen as she gives it a scan of Detect Magic.

And then she whistles, because damn, dude.]

Those are some serious stacks on this already. I'm a little jealous, actually. Where'd you get this?

It was a gift from my Inquisitor back home. I happened to find it on a previous planet, as it happens. Before I had it, I lacked a focus for my magic.. not that it was essential.

Lucky on both counts, then. It's dangerous for a wizard to cast without a focus.

[Though liches can get away with that one, being pure arcane energy themselves... but that's not relevant. She turns the staff over in both hands, checking where the enchantments are affixed; after a moment she twists it upside down to examine the rune at the base, as well.]

What else are you looking to add to it?

Its strength is spells involving ice, however, I seldom use it in comparison to fire or necromancy, which go hand in hand with one another. If there was a way to alter its strengths, I believe that would be beneficial. I am open to suggestion.

Mm... well, I can probably help you with that one. Fire's my speciality, and I know a thing or two about necromancy. Lemme try it-

[Barry would be more useful for the latter, but she's well-read and experienced enough to give it a bit of extra flavour.

She takes a few steps away from him, gesturing for him to keep his distance, and focuses on the staff intently, calling upon her own arcana. The best way to get a feel for a magical artifact's properties is to use it, and it's much faster than having him explain. Thankfully she always has elemental spells on tap, so it's easy enough to toss a couple of cantrips at the wall: targeting one of the room's chairs (the rickety one, she hates that one anyway) she casts Frostbite, giving it a few seconds for the ice to spread. It's already cracking in a dozen spots when she follows up with Firebolt, and the whole thing erupts in flames.

Once that's done (and the poor chair is a smouldering pile of scraps) she whistles again in quiet admiration and offers the staff back out to him.]

Yeah, okay, that tracks. That first spell's meant to be weaker than the second, but the level of power felt about the same. I could feel the boost while casting ice magic.

[Once her hands are free she whips out her communicator, snapping a quick photo of the chalkboard she'd been working on, and starts erasing one side of it to make room for new notes.]

[ Once she's finished testing out his staff, he moves toward her, glancing over her chalkboard notes. ] I am certainly no artificer, but I have a bit of knowledge in Thaumaturgy should you need someone to bounce ideas off of.

[She has no idea what that even means in her universe, though she suspects it's very different.

Taking a piece of chalk, she draws out a very rudimentary sketch of his staff, with lines dragging out from the head, blade, and runic portions of the design.]
