[ loki hadn't sparred in a while. at least not with the people here. too breakable, too weak. and while thor was strong enough, their styles weren't well suited for each other. loki, who preferred striking from a distance while thor preferred to smash things with a hammer.

so he finds himself waiting eagerly, idly twirling the knives in his hands as he waits. ]

[He makes his way to the Iskaulit as promised, thankful to avoid interacting with anyone on the way to the gym. He's not in the mood — a common mood lately — but he is looking forward to sparring with Loki. It's a strange thought a little; he's been used for training before, and he makes the time to train his shipmates in self defense. But there's no one in the Fleet with whom he feels comfortable showing what he really can do. He's hoping Loki will be different.

On entering the gym and seeing those knives spinning through the other man's hands, some of the tension bleeds out of his shoulders. He's pulled on his tactical gear, knives at his own hips and one at his back, and he actually feels a curl of anticipation.]

I hope I didn't keep you waiting.

[ loki shakes his head, pleased. ]

Not at all.

I'm glad.

[Since there doesn't seem much need for delay — they both know why they're here — he jumps right into it, trying to get a feel for how the other man moves.]

[ loki bares his teeth at that, pleased and impressed. while loki looks like any other person, no real distinguishing mark to show that he's different, it's quite apparent in the way he move, lithe and prowling at the edges, the knives in his grip.

with a flick of his fingers, he aims the first knife boldly — right at bucky's chest. ]

[They're like two cats circling, almost: fluid movement and deadly intent. Loki's movements are fast and sharp but he's been trained to be more than human; he twists enough to knock the knife aside with his left hand while flipping his own knife into his right. Knife work for him is close-quarters fighting, and he attempts to close the distance once more.]

[ loki waits until the distance is closed before he lashes out with his knife, trying to bring it down on bucky's non-metal arm while he has his arm up to block any potential attacks. ]

[Loki's speed forces him to react quickly, knife flipping from his right to his left so that he can attempt to grab that attacking wrist. There's a smile on his face though, because this is much more fun than he'd thought it would be, and it's nice not to have to hold himself back.

There is a kick aiming for the side of Loki's knee too, by the way. Just because.]

[ the blow glances off his knee, which makes him hiss but he doesn't flinch from the pain. he lets bucky grab his wrist and uses that against him, turning it to grab at bucky's hand and attempting to twist it behind his back. ]

[That hiss totally counts as a victory, even as he finds himself twisting again with Loki's motion, a grunt escaping him. It's a good time to use his weight and knife both, driving it a Loki's face.]

[ loki manages to jerk back, missing the point of the knife aiming for his face before he applies pressure to bucky's arm, trying to force him down to his knees. ]

[That hadn’t worked as planned so he just drops instead, suddenly and quickly, using the momentum of the motion to pull Loki forward over his shoulder so that they can tumble away from each other.]

[ loki lets himself be tumbled, if only to land neatly on his feet, throwing his hair back with a feral smile. ]

Not bad at all.

Not bad yourself.

[It's not an idle compliment; Loki is stronger than he looks, and faster than he'd anticipated. It's refreshing to not have to hold back and he's back up almost as soon as Loki is, a feral grin on his face and light in his eyes. This is fun.]

[ it is . . . relaxing, in a way. loki has never been good at holding back and he has never needed to. his fight style jars with the way asgard did things, with swords and blunt weaponry. when he was younger, loki struggled to lift the dense swords and maces everyone used so easily. but here, like this, it was like breathing. he waits until bucky is close enough before loki sidesteps to try slamming his elbow into bucky's face. ]

[It is easy, easier than perhaps it should be. Natural to move with Loki and there's the brief thought of wanting to fight with him, to know how they move together like that as well. He's not long to dwell though because Loki is fast and vicious both; his left arm comes up to block the incoming strike while his right dives blade-first for Loki's side.]

[ it certainly would be a sight. when the knife head for loki's side, he twists once more to grab it, attempting to wrest it from bucky's grip, squeezing the fingers as he wrenches his elbow back to try another strike to the head. ]

[The knife is abandoned easily; the head stroke met by the open palm of his left hand. Plates shift and whir softly as he brings the strength in the artificial limb to bear in order to push Loki back.]

[ he was expecting that pressure which is why loki hooks his foot around bucky's ankle, to get him off balance and use that pressure to topple him over onto the ground. ]

[Falling isn't a problem when you can turn it into a fall-and-roll to come out on top. And if that doesn't work, well, he's not afraid of bucking his hips to knock Loki off either.]

[ that amounts to a loss of balance in them both, heading to the ground. loki immediately has his knife ready to leverage against bucky's throat. ]

[The kiss of the blade makes him pause, a bitter laugh escaping his lips before he can bite it back.]

You know, not too long ago I would have wanted you to follow that strike through to completion.

[ loki cocks his head. he doesn't seem surprised or shocked by that statement, merely absorbing it thoughtfully. his hand does not twitch. ]

But you are no longer seeking oblivion.

[ just like loki. he too stopped seeking for an end, no matter how many ends find him. ]

It is a hard life but you have taken ownership of the hardness.

Mmmm...

[It's not entirely accurate, he thinks, but it's not entirely inaccurate either. Loki does make him think, which has been both helpful and frustrating in turn.]

As I hope you'll own your goodness.

[The conversation that had prompted their meeting here is still fresh in his mind. But that's all he'll say about it, instead taking a sudden movement to surge up and attempt to throw Loki off and reverse their positions.]

[ loki does laugh, a bright bubble that bursts from his chest as he's flat on the ground. he still tries to swipe his knife upwards, but he doubts it'll get far. ]

Is this a fight for ownership then?

Do you want it to be?

[They hadn't really set any sort of a goal for the spar, but he supposes it doesn't truly matter. What's more important is how much fun it is to be able to finally let go, catching Loki's wrist with his left hand and trying to press it into the floor.]

[ loki hums, tension still coiled in his muscles, waiting to spring, giving him a sharp grin. ]

I haven't decided yet.

Let me know when you do.

[Until then it's attempting to keep Loki pinned to the floor, hands on both of his wrists.]

Oh, most certainly.

[ with that, loki swings his leg upward to jostle bucky's hold on him. ]

[It definitely does jostle his balance, and cuts off any reply he'd been about to make. Not that he really minds; they're here to spar after all, and he tries to compensate for that wobble by getting a forearm across Loki's throat, but he might not be quick enough.]

[ loki grabs that forearm, pulling it back before he reaches out with his other hand for bucky's neck, forcing bucky backwards. ]

[Now they're just rolling around on the floor together what is this even. ~~No one better tell Steve.~~]

[ loki certainly isn't going to tell him, but eventually loki holds up a hand, wiping his brow. he doesn't sweat often, his internal body temperature keeping him cool at all times. ]

I think that'll suffice for today.

[At least they can agree on the not telling part. That's part of what he likes about encounters with Loki though; the other man seems as private a person as he, and there's a comfort in knowing the times they spend together, the conversations they have, are not to be shared with others.

He's grinning and breathing heavily himself when Loki calls the truce; it's been more of a workout than he'd anticipated, and he's glad of it.]

For today maybe. But I think I'd like to do this again.

[ he stares at that smile, before he does the smile, tentative but bright around the edges. ]

Then we shall.

You know how to find me.

[He rolls smoothly to his feet after another moment, and offers a hand up to Loki.]

[ loki takes it gratefully, rising to his feet. ]

I do.
