[This is a thing Cole does.

He travels the Fleet a lot, from ship to ship, meeting people, talking to people, hanging out. He sees people he knows and meets new ones, or ones he just didn't encounter before

He wants to help everyone. Which means meeting them first. Or finding them. Doing that might involve poking through the ships, even if he really shouldn't. Or going through personal belongings. Sorry about that. He's curious.

And armed. It is worth mentioning he's got a pair of wickedly sharp fighting knives on his back. Sorry about that as well.]

[He's... easing, slowly, into this weird conversation. Cole isn't here to harm anyone.]

The world could use more compassion, all things considered.

[A pause, as he plays with his sleeves.]

My talent is arcane magic. Spells and enchantments, they're all the same to me-- just more knots to untangle and rearrange. I was weaving spells when most children were still learning their letters.

Why are there two Coles?

[Cole never means any harm. He means kindness and quick death and he's really not going to kill anyone in the fleet unless forced to.]

I don't understand the difference between healing and spell. Aren't they the same? They're all magic.

The first Cole was a real person. A mage. He died. Now I'm Cole. I remember his life. And his death.

[Some part of him knows that, probably, but he didn't get this far by blindly trusting. The kids who did are dead, or corrupted, or worse.]

They're different schools of magic. Healing magic comes from faith. I believe, but the Light never touched me like it did other people. There isn't anything I can do about that.

[He blinks slowly, trying to make sense of that. Thankfully he's a smart kid and Cole explains things very simply sometimes.]

That's... [A spirit, living on as a person who died. How very fitting for a spirit of Compassion.] It's sad. [Not in the 'oh that's pathetic' way, but in the way that people dying is sad.]

Oh. It's not like that in Thedas. All magic comes from the Fade. Healing magic comes from Compassion.

[People might find some things easier, but it's to do with personality and attitudes rather than inherent aptitude.]

Yes. When they found his body, they removed all evidence that he was ever there. There was no one but me to know.

[Belth pauses. He's not very good at this compassion thing. It's not that he doesn't care-- in fact, he's done everything he can to put himself in a position where he can use his talents to help others-- but he's afraid of being hurt again.

Cole won't hurt him, but the point still stands. Belth has absolutely no idea what is a good thing to say in this situation.]

Someone told me once that he would like to be remembered, that way he can live forever. [He tilts his head.] I suppose... in a way you're giving the other Cole a second life.
