[This is a thing Cole does.

He travels the Fleet a lot, from ship to ship, meeting people, talking to people, hanging out. He sees people he knows and meets new ones, or ones he just didn't encounter before

He wants to help everyone. Which means meeting them first. Or finding them. Doing that might involve poking through the ships, even if he really shouldn't. Or going through personal belongings. Sorry about that. He's curious.

And armed. It is worth mentioning he's got a pair of wickedly sharp fighting knives on his back. Sorry about that as well.]

Maybe Dorian would. The Tevinter Empire build very big buildings. I think they use magic to build them though.

Hey, that's cheating. [Its a gentle tease, and he offers a small grin.]

[Cole understands the social cues, but doesn't really get how it would be cheating. So he nods.]

Dorian cheats when he plays chess against the Commander. He says I should call him Cullen, not Commander, because he's not a Commander here.

I don't have any jurisdiction here either, but I still feel like a detective. [He shrugs a little. He's finding, slowly but surely, that he's getting used to the way Cole speaks. He just goes with the flow of the conversation, whichever way he wants to take it. Now that he's relaxing a little he scoots further up the bed, dangling his legs off the edge of the bed.]

You solve mysteries. Like the city guard. You police civilians. Like a templar for people, not mages.

[Not resisting Cole's way of talking is often easiest. For everyone involved.]

[Cole gives Ray a suspicious, disbelieving look, clearly unable to grasp that someone didn't know the difference.]

Mages. Are mages. They do magic. They're connected to the Fade. Templars are Templars. Knights. They can diminish spells and smother magic. And they're very good at chopping enemies up.

[He levels a look back at Cole- give him a break, pal, he's still getting used to all you magic-y people.]

So it's a good thing that I'm like that? 'Cause it sounds kinda cool, but uh, I never- [He makes a lame karate chop motion] chopped no one.

You don't have the cruelty of a lot of Templars.

I try to put away the bad guys, not be one, y'know? But it helps to pretend, get a perp all rattled. [He pulls a tough face, jabs the air with a fist, then relaxes again and grins and Cole.]

[Cole watches, but hand to hand fighting like that makes no sense to him, so he just nods.

His face pretty clearly shows he has no idea what Ray's talking about.]

Uh... [He sags again, scratches at his jaw while he considers that] You know, you catch a bad guy, they always say they didn't do it. Threaten to kick 'em in the head a little, suddenly they remembered that they did do it-- but you don't actually kick 'em, you just pretend?

Most of the people I've fought don't deny what they did...

Oh. This is like Rainier and his men.

[Claim it isn't your fault, you didn't know, become someone who didn't do it.]

It's what the children sang. The soldiers were told to kill everyone. They didn't know the children would be there, but they were good soldiers, they accepted that they were demons.

[Well, that's certainly depressing. Ray looks obviously uncomfortable, frowning and fidgeting, but he also seems sympathetic.]

They did that, and then denied it happened?

Except one. He was spared because the company leader admitted he lied to his men.
