[ The video is abrupt, the angle awkward. It cuts on to a comm laying on what appears to be a dining table in a fully upgraded kitchen. Chris is standing off-center, facing someone who is holding what appears to be a lightly-glowing orb in his hands.

This appears to be a very controversial thing, holding a glowy ball. ]

They gave you grandad?! It's a casino! Where the hell did they even get that?

Actually, where the hell do you even keep that now? Or... then. Back then? Whatever. How do you play slots to win your father's soul?

[Riiiight. There's a telling silence in response to that. But after a moment-]

I'm sensing two demons, one holding something with a trapped soul within.

[ Chris sucks in a breath. Those are some highly sensitive senses Allen has, and he wasn't expecting to be called out as demonic in the middle of all this. He hesitates, not because he wants to deny it, but because it's such a delicate situation ~~considering his ship has two Dragon Ages on it~~ ]

[Please like you have anything to fear from a group that calls themselves the Inquisition. And there's a long bit of silence, possibly longer than the last one. It's strange, it's almost like he's...listening to something.]

[When he speaks, his tone is slightly less terse]

...Yes. I see that. Mr. Benjamin is insisting that his grandson would be nothing but a very brave and good boy.

[ ~~yeah clearly he's in great hands~~ When Allen says that, Chris just goes still. His eyes widen, and he looks over to the soul, up to Cole, back to the soul, then back to the camera. It isn't the statement itself, but that Allen pulled Benjamin Turner's name out of the cosmic hat. His voice is soft. ]

You can hear him? He said that?

I can, and yes, he did.

[It's not surprising. If Allen's noticed one thing about the souls he can see and hear..they usually have messages of love to give]

...Your grandfather's soul is in very good condition, better than most souls I've seen. I'd recommend keeping him in a safe place until you can find a good place to lay him to rest.

[ More or less. It's not like he and Cole have this crazy idea of bringing Benjamin back to life eventually or anything. GEE, THAT WOULD BE STUPID!! ]

Is he... saying anything else?

[SO STUPID!! Go ahead and tell the Exorcist that Chris. See how demon jail works out for you- whatever that is since I just made it up.]

...That he loves you two and he's sorry for not being there longer. I'm afraid not much else makes sense to me- souls tend not to have a filter when they realise they can be heard after being isolated for so long.

[Aka they're kinda nutty. Like chill grandpa turner- what good would that safe combination do in space??]

[ HE IS NOT TELLING ANOTHER SOUL hurr hurr geddit ]

[ Whatever the fuck exorcists do, Chris wants none of it. He hasn't hurt anyone or done anything demon-y and his dad has been on pretty good behavior lately, so!! ]

[He looks at Chris on the feed. Quite calmly]

By "this", do you mean you having that soul? Or do you mean the part where it's part of an Exorcist job to hunt demons?

[ Chris bites his lip, meets Allen's eyes after a moment. ]

Both, really. Look, I understand it, demons are evil and should be stopped, but we're not exactly run of the mill here.

[And he's looking him straight in the eye]

[ There's a vague gesture toward Cole and Benjamin's glowy orb. ]

You probably noticed Grandad's soul is human. That means we are, too. Well... in part.

You mean you're half-demons?

[He seems to consider]

Rare, but not unheard of. Though most I've encountered became half-demons through dark rituals or unethical human experimentation. Not birth.

Yeah, that's the gist of it. I mean, my mom was human too, but...

[ He shrugs. "Human" almost doesn't count where magical interbreeding is concerned, but it means that demon children have souls so it's still an important distinction. ]

Apparently it works out just fine. Demons and humans having kids.

Really. How interesting...

[But okay, he can't keep up the facade any longer. A grin and a half laugh is starting to break through]

You can relax.

[ There's a pause of Chris opening his mouth, holding it, then glowering. ]

You were messing with me.

I meant everything about the soul!

But...a little, yes. I sensed you were a demon months ago.

Yeah, I figured that part.

[ Ugh. He scoffs, shakes his head. ]

So you don't actually care? Or is it just an innocent until proven guilty thing?

Hmmm....

[he considers how to word it]

Well, I'd certainly care if a demon did hurt someone, and I'd get involved if that happened. And if that soul had been suffering, this conversation would have gone a very different way.

But...it's not like I'm sitting here, waiting for you to show your "true colours". I've been at this a long time, I know things aren't nearly as black and white as people like to think they are.

[ That... isn't the explanation Chris is expecting. No one ever considers the grey, not when it comes to the demon son of a Charmed One and the former Source of All Evil. Not that Allen knows that, but Allen can actually see the demon in Chris and seems pretty cool with it.

Yes, well- in places like this, everything is more complicated. Less armies of unquestionably evil demons and more single demons who are just...people.

A single person, demonic or not...that's harder to hate.
