[ lioriley doesn't use the network often, if at all, so it's a small wonder she's decided to purposefully do so today. but it's for a good reason, she thinks - a way to deal with the mild depression she might be suffering from due to various circumstances beyond her control. not that said depression is obvious, with the way she smiles brightly at the screen; the lines on her skin pulsing faintly. ]

Good evening! [ or whatever. space is weird. ] I have been meaning to ask, though have not found the opportune time to do so until now, but I have a few questions for you - all of you - if any are willing to answer. 'Tis not mandatory. [ but it might be a good distraction, not only for herself. ]

There are many here that I have not spoken to, many from worlds I have never heard of. So I wonder... would you tell me what your homelands are like? Do you have magic? How advanced is the technology? What is the landscape like - do you have buildings of wood, or metal? Anything and everything you are willing to share, I am more than happy to listen.

[ she shifts in her seat, glancing out the window nearby - almost wistful - before addressing the network once more. ] And tell me of yourselves, if you would. To those that I have spoken to previously, you are more than willing to answer as well, for I know there is more that I am not aware of - and there is certainly more knowledge to be shared amongst us all.

[ before she goes, she adds: ] Ah... and you are free to ask anything of me as well.

Ah...I'm afraid my homeworld is very large, so it's a little hard to describe all at once. But I'm from Earth! We have some magic, though it's not very common- there's a lot of people who don't even believe it exists.

As for the technology, ah... [Normally he'd just say "19th century" but that doesn't help here] Well, that depends on what time period of Earth you're talking about, it has a very long history and you get people from all sorts of times if they come from Earth.

It seems there are quite a few people from Earth - though I have heard some variation.

[ she cocks her head to the side, curious. ] What of the time period you are from? Is the technology as advanced as it is here, or less so?

Mm, there's multiple versions of it as well. At least, as far as we can tell.

[Like for example, it sounds like other Earths didn't have Japan completely eaten by monsters. So. Go them]

When I left it was the end of 1898 AD. The technology was...much less advanced than here. Having electricity was only starting to become common.

I see. So it must have been quite the transition for you once you arrived, yes? [ she taps her chin thoughtfully, humming. ] Even with the augments we have been given, I find myself marveling at many of the advancements here myself. For me, even the concept of electricity is almost baffling - though that is not to say it is not intriguing.

Ah...sorta. The fleet wasn't the first place like this I've been so...it made the transition a little easier. Though the first time I left my homeworld it took a lot of time!

[It's all a long story]

Really? So you didn't have electricity in your world?

[ she shakes her head. ] We do not - we rely on magic in nearly every aspect of our lives. And if not that, we only have the basic necessities. I had not though it was so primitive until I arrived here...

That's incredible...magic's certainly not in that much abundance in my world. [Maybe that's why Earth worked to improve tech]

[ She looks a little amused ]

That's a lot to answer. You might be here awhile.

I have plenty of time, and 'tis not necessary to answer everything. Only that which you are willing.

Uhm, well ... we don't have magic where I come from. And technology is -- a lot less advanced than it is here on the ships. But we still have, like, electricity and stuff like that. My village is kinda in a forest, and our houses are mostly made of wood ...

Still a bit more advanced than my own, it seems. [ she shrugs, ] How large is your village? Do you have many neighbors in the forest...?

It's the biggest around, but -- apparently, there are much bigger places. Thousands of people live in Konoha, though.

There are other villages nearby, but the forest is mostly just animals, not people.

You, uh, you saw my world, so I guess it's pretty clear. At least, the place I'm from. What's yours look like?

[He is imagining trees. Possibly tree houses-- oh man, that'd be cool, would she live in a tree house?]

Ah - I should have shown you when we had the chance. [ oh well. maybe they'll run into a vrd again sometime. ]

The city I call home, specifically, rests at the base of a large mountain - a land of perpetual night where the sun never shines. The weather was, as one might imagine, quite cold all year round. [ alas, there weren't any tree-houses though. sorry. ] And our buildings are made of stone - much unlike the ones you showed me in your world, or carved into the mountain itself.

Hey, that sounds pretty cool. 's it a big city?

Not nearly as large as your Chicago, but it is quite big, yes. [ she laughs, ] And our buildings are not nearly as tall - except for the tower in which the mages train. That one is high enough to make one dizzy by simply looking at it.

The big shots gets the big tower, huh? What's your city called?

Big shots? [ they're not big shots! okay, they kind of are, but that's not the point. ] Maligrae.

'S nice. They're not big shots?

[aha. seeing this particular face pop on his screen reminds him...

so, he sets up a little encryption, and flips on his own video feed.]

Feeling chatty today?

'Tis not a bad thing, is it? [ she recognizes that voice and responds immediately without even thinking. it's only when she turns her attention back toward the camera that she realizes she can actually see him this time. ] Ah... finally a face to put to the voice, hm? How have you been?

I've been better, in all honesty.

[but he's smiling easily enough, and he certainly sounds better.]

I was terribly out of sorts the last time we spoke-- I never even asked for your name. It was very rude of me.

Hardly so. [ he just admitted he was 'terribly out of sorts' so he has a good enough reason to not have introduced himself, she thinks. ]

I can just as easily tell you now. I am Lioriley. [ a slight bow of her head toward the camera. ] And you?

[What a strange-looking person. Still, Thedas is full of not-quite-as-strange looking people, so that's not much of barrier.]

There's magic where I'm from, yes. I'm from Thedas. Specifically, the city of Kirkwall, where I'm the captain of the city guard. Which is... mostly stone, for what it's worth.

My name is Aveline Vallen. Who and what are you?

[That's asked as politely as a question like that can be. If nothing else, she's direct.]

I have met quite a few people from Thedas, and Kirkwall especially! It is a wonder you are all here together. [ how quaint.

she doesn't seem too perturbed by aveline's blunt question - she expects it, if nothing else, given most responses she's gotten here. ]

A pleasure, Aveline. I am Lioriley, and I am a Dark Elf, hailing from the lands of Kilarria.

[A dark elf? Well. That's. Descriptive, if nothing else.]

I haven't heard of Kilarria, but you probably haven't heard of Kirkwall.

I have heard of Kirkwall from a few people on the fleet, actually. Cullen told me of its structure not too long ago, as it bore some semblance to one of the planets we visited recently.

Of course I missed that one. But I do know Cullen. We have elves, but... they don't look like you.

We got magic in my world. Though most the folks there don't know 'bout it or can use it. Normies, we call 'em. I live in a city called Nieve. S'a place on the shore of one of the continents. It, er, ain't as advanced as what we got here, but it ain't like that... Mor planet we were at before neither. Somewhere in between.

Normies. [ she repeats the word. it sounds... odd, almost insulting? ] I see, so you may know a bit more than I in regards to technology - augment or no. [ it's so interesting to learn where people stand on magic and technology in their world! ]

So you, I assume, are not a 'Normie'? What magic do you practice?

Stuff here's still way outta my depth. We got radios and cars and telephones back home, but no spaceships. This place looks more like somethin' outta some penny comic than anythin' I'd go seein' back home.

Mostly fulgurmancy. Er, lightnin' magic. Try not t'go usin' it too often here, yeah? Too many blinkin' things I might go breakin'.

Magic? You're asking about... Is there magic where you're from?

[A pause. Oh, right, right, she asked a question.]

But, um, there isn't any where I'm from. It's all just stories. But there's a lot of metal!

There is. We use magic for a great many things - I myself am a product of magic. [ her enthusiasm is adorable... ]

What stories do they tell of it? Good ones, I hope.

[--A product of magic?! Leanne doesn't have the slightest clue what that could possibly mean, but. She probably shouldn't ask, should she... Would that be too personal a question?

Maybe she should just focus on...]

Oh, wow, that's so awesome! It must be great to live somewhere like that!

They're all good stories though, yeah! They're... [A laugh.] Fairy tales, where good things always happen.

[ if she ever does decide to ask, lioriley won't be offended in the slightest. ]

You said there was a lot of metal where you are from, yes? Do you have - Ah... [ what was the word ray used? oh right-- ] Skyscrapers?

[She'll totally just blurt it out when she doesn't mean to.]

Skyscrapers? [Leanne frowns, tapping a finger against the side of her communicator.] No, what are those? Are they something you can really... um, scrape the sky with?

[IT... seems almost logical?]

The metal where I'm from is just for the floors and walls, mostly.

Man, compared to everyone else's worlds, mine's so boring. [He grins though; it's been an absolute joy hearing about other places that are so different from his own.] My whole world is so different, it's hard to describe. Some places have buildings made out of metal, some of them are made out of bricks, and some have wood. Some places have access to the most advanced technology that we've come up with so far, and some don't. It's all about where on the world you live.

As for magic... Well. We don't have any as far as I know, but who knows? Maybe some of the stuff we do is consider magic to someone else, and we'd never think of it that way.

I find it hard to believe that anyone's world can be boring. [ she just likes learning about new places and things and people, so all of it is interesting to her to some degree.

Your world must be quite vast to house such a variety of technologies and buildings. What is it like where you live, specifically? Is it a city? A village? [ a shack in the middle of the woods??!?? ]

[Oh man, that's adorable. Clay leans in slightly with a big smile; it's nice to be able to actually talk about his world. He misses it now that he's away from it.]

I live in a really big city called Los Angeles! There are tall buildings everywhere, and so many things to do! You can be a member of just about anything, go to one of many museums, go to the beach, you can go just outside the city and look at the stars... Not that I need to do that now. [He gestures to the window he's sitting by; kind of hard to romanticize stars when you're seeing them all the time now, even though it's still a thrill to him.] I live in one of the apartments there - See, think of a large building that has many rooms, and people rent those rooms to live in for a while. That's where I live!

[Mahna is more taken with her pulsing tattoos than the questions she asks. Oops.

He taps one of his own, a gentle arch along his cheek.] I've never seen them glow before.

[That and he doesn't recognize the tattoos as belonging to the elven pantheon.]

[ a common response! the dark elf tilts her head, examining his own tattoos through the screen as best she can. interesting. ]

Mine may be slightly different from yours. How were they created?

[Two things draw his attention to this. The first is probably what she's grow to expect by now - her appearance. The second is literally the 'magic' word]
