Who: Ino and you!
Broadcast: Fleetwide video
Action: Blue Fish
When: Now!
[ Ino looks a little frazzled, but she's all business when she addresses the camera. ]
Hey everyone! An update on the research going on right now. Well, as far as I know, anyways. If anyone has any findings besides what I'm about to say, let me know, I'll add it to the list.
To make this short and sweet, we've figured out that these aliens are pretty damn intelligent -- near to or on par with humans. [ She holds up a hand, as if to shush the people watching ] Immortals and non-humans, please save your jokes about how dumb we are for the end, please and thank you.
Anyways, they're pretty smart, but they weren't really supposed to be all crazy and vicious. So we looked into it and it looks like they've been exposed to some sort of fungus that's severely damaged their nervous system. If you didn't know, that's linked to the brain, and so very much affects how they act and think. We're thinking that's shorted out their ability to think and reason properly. Hence the conflicting violent attitude compared to the distress signal they sent out before.
Soooo, if you haven't put two and two together -- until we figure out the deal with this mold, how to potentially cure the damage it's caused, so on and so forth -- I would not recommend going on the ship at all until we can determine for sure that it's not going to infect us, too. I know there's a lot of interesting things going on on the ship, but you don't know what that shit could do to you. [ A beat ] Seriously.
If you're going to be a stubborn idiot and go on the ship anyways, I'm going to be keeping an eye on the entrance and keep note of anyone who decides to go in, so you can be monitored in the future. You know, just in case this comes back to bite us later, which it probably will, because that's how these things work.
If you've been on the ship and you're worried about your own personal health, or have noticed any recent symptoms you think are off in some way, I'd be happy to check and see if your everything is in order! I'd also recommend drinking a lot of water the next few days to flush any toxins out of your body.
Anybody have any questions? I'm Ino, captain of the Three Twins for those who don't know me. Just let me know.
[ And with a short little wave, she ends the feed. ]

video;
They-- they were sapient?
[Belth, for his part, looks horrified.]
We killed so many of them.
video;
We did.
But there isn't much we can do about that now, except to hopefully find a way to pass on the cure to their people, once it's done.
video;
I-it's just like the undead.
[He drags his hands down his face.]
I never meant to kill anyone. I never wanted to!
video;
Bel, of course you didn't. But they were ... very sick. They wouldn't have lived much longer even if we hadn't made contact.
video;
He pulls his hood down over his head, pale fingers tight around the hem.]
Are you sure?
video;
[ She pauses -- she doesn't want to get too explicit with the details, here, considering how upset he is, but she does want to make it clear they were suffering ]
... A lot of their insides were starting to wear away from the poison of the fungus. There's only so much a body can take of that before it just stops working.
video;
Ah...
[Breathe in. Breathe out. He's calming, a little. His ears are still flat though.]
It's still... they were still people, once. They deserved a better death. All we can do is give them rest, I suppose.
[He lowers his hands to his lap.]
On Azeroth, most people burn their dead. It keeps the contagion from spreading and it makes sure that the fallen can't be revived by necromancy. I can help contain the fire if need be.
video;
That would be a very nice thing to do, I think. I'm sure there will be a lot of people interested in helping send them off properly.
video;
I don't want to ever see something like this again.
video;
But making sure Bel is alright is more important here, so: ]
I hope you won't have to.
video;
I know they were suffering, but I still feel disgusting. If I was told I had to kill someone I knew to make the hurting stop, I... couldn't. I'm weak...
video;
video;
[He shakes his head.]
The world is full of war. Killing is a part of it and it's a part of surviving.
But I don't want to. I want to heal, like you do.
[Like his sister.]
video;
And there's nothing wrong with that. Healing is important, and it's something that can help people and make a difference in the time they have left to live. Saving people makes a difference, and wanting to do so requires a whole lot more skill and heart than someone who doesn't even want to try.
... Not everybody can or should be the person that has to kill others. It's not brave at all -- it's just something that unfortunately has to be done, sometimes. And I say that as a person whose job often involves having to do just that ... as someone who came here from the middle of a world war.
video;
[He stares at her for a long moment. How do you fight against that? You can't.
She's right, of course. It's the kind of wisdom he needed to hear. For all his supposed knowledge, he has a very narrow view of the world, one where he is simultaneously a horrible piece of crap but also better than some other people. It's weird and confusing. He's the elven equivalent of a teenager so that's probably why.
He looks down at his hands as he tries to think of what to say.]
I was forced to fight in the last place I was taken. There was training twice a week. If I did not show up, they would drag me in. And-- once, I... had to kill someone on a mission...
[He adjusts his sleeves.]
I feel sick thinking about it. I don't understand how anyone can make it a career-- and I have lived as long as a human veteran.
But you are right. Healers are very brave. I have no talent for it, so I have to help through other means, but every healer I have known is incredible.
video;
Honestly? I never knew anything different, for most of my life. I was raised to be what I am, and my family has been that way for generations.
I mean, I try not to kill as much as I can help it -- there are plenty of situations where non-lethal force does the trick.
[ But sometimes, there's no other way. Sometimes it saves more lives by ending just one. ... And sometimes you mistake the crew for an infestation. Y'know.
She sighs, though ]
Why do you think you have no talent for it?
video;
I come from a world where adventurers and mercenaries are the norm. But I was-- I didn't go outside much, and when I did, I hid or I ran. I never had to make those kinds of choices before.
[He rubs absentmindedly at the back of his neck.]
Healers are touched by the Light, like Adrasteius. I am not. Reading a spell in a book and reciting it does not have the same effect for me. There isn't even an explosion, just... silence. [Oh no here comes rambly teenager.] But I am talented with every other kind of spell. I can modify enchantments and break arcane prisons, and I could probably do a lot more if I had access to materials and research, but all people see-- my own people-- when they look at me is how young I am and how I am from some poor family and they think I am overreaching without giving me a chance to prove myself--
video;
That's silly. I could probably teach you how to do it the way that I do. No, uh ... Light touching required.
video;
With... [What was the word.] ... chakra?
[Here's the proverbial carrot. Learning something new? AMAZING. He's brightening, slowly but surely.]
You wouldn't mind?
video;
No, I wouldn't mind -- I've been teaching what you'd have to learn first to Hiro anyways, so the two of you can practice together.
video;
Really?!
[Oh no he sounds too excited. He clears his throat.]
I mean, ah, that's fine.
video;
Yeah, really. I'm sure he'll appreciate a partner to work with who won't totally kick his ass.
video;
[SIGH... he hates being frail but that's the mage life.]
video;
Well, some of the stuff you'll learn first will give you a fighting chance, anyways.
