[ Whatever's going on, Chris is pretty intent on it. He's mucking about in the kitchen working with the meager supplies and there is definitely the smell of chocolate protein stuffs everywhere. He started on it the night before but now that he's messing with it in earnest it smells... fantastic, actually. There's semi-solid chocolate, gel chocolate, gel peanut butter, all getting mixed up real well and chilled inside the mini-fridge.

Is he making brownies?! ]

So... I know, I know. Don't remind me. But can I shimmer over today? I want to see you. In person.

[ Beat. Maybe he needs to up the ante. ]

I figured out how to make brownies.

[ No matter how Chris gets there, he's on the Wonderduck again with some of his makeshift brownies and something else kind of clunky-looking in a bag. Feel free to assault him for being new or unknown or carrying chocolatey perfection. He's not going to be handing it out on his own, you know! ]

[Varric is pleasantly surprised when he smells something AWESOME coming from the kitchen. Chris is welcome to notice a familiar dwarven face just... slowly rising over the counter... and kinda stopping prematurely, because he's short.]

That smells like food. I didn't know you were a miracle worker, Prickly.

This? It's pretty simple. Do they even have brownies in... wherever you said it was?

[ Yeah Chris doesn't think it's all that fancy. He really would have liked to go all out and make a cake, but the stuff on the waystations are an insult to culinary pursuits and he isn't going to subject Cole to that. So, brownies with what they've got. ]

You mean Kirkwall? The closest thing I can think of is a really flat cake. And it usually doesn't smell like... chocolate.

[He smirks a bit.]

If you have any extras, I don't mind. But I'm not going to hound you if they're for someone else.

[ Chris moves to lean his hip against the counter and shrugs like it isn't a big deal. ]

They are, but I think I can make an exception if you've never had any before. That's got to be a crime somewhere.

[Varric looks surprised before he can really clamp down on it, and then he smiles.]

[He gets himself a glass of water in the meantime.]

I thought I heard something about upgrading the place when I got here. What are your thoughts?

[ Chris nods a bit, goes back to making his current batch. Cole's not going to notice a single brownie missing and besides, Chris himself has to taste-test before serving it up, right? Right. ]

It'd be useful. I mean, we could always do with more... anything on this ship. Everything here kind of sucks. On the other hand, I was talking with someone else and... I don't know. They say ratings are the way to get out of here, and it looks like our pay's tied to our ratings. What if it's just some kind of metaphor?

[ He's looking kind of expectantly at Varric here. Please don't make him spell it out. ]

You want to sit on your money and hope you can eventually buy your way out?

[Varric scritches his chin.]

Honestly, I wouldn't be so sure. We're both still pretty new around here. We haven't even begun to see how the place really works.

[That sure does look convincingly like brownies. How did he manage that? He watches for a moment, like maybe he could glean just how this was accomplished, then decides to commend him on his efforts.]

[ Chris startles, looks around, notices the console that's on in the kitchen. He glowers at it, then turns back to his mixing. If the consistency isn't right, then the whole point is moot and he'll have to start over. ]

[ Chris scoffs in amusement. ]

You don't know how much he eats. [ Beat. ] Besides, it's really not that hard.

A birthday. I mean, with the way time works here and what time it was back home, it's... not actually, but the date is right. [ Shrug. ]

[ At the pause, Chris is getting more and more amused just trying to figure out what it's about. ]

[ Some noise as he gets his things together. Shuttle would take forever, come on now. ]

[If he still had his Wasteland powers, it would have worked. God, he misses his Wasteland powers sometimes. Doesn't miss the crazy that came with it, but he did like the powers.]

Yeah, I don't think you're strong enough to pull people across space, Dad.

[ Chris might be, but that's why he doesn't have apportation. Because the world hates him. ]

I'll hop your shimmer. Shuttles are so slow.

[That smell is...chocolate. Sort of a weird variation from what she's used to, but that's a given with their food supplies. All the same, it's a nostalgic scent. Shirley's quickly drawn to the kitchen and surprised to see Chris there - although then again, who was she expecting with only two people on board?]

Are you baking? It smells amazing.

[ You never know! Maybe Varric has a secret passion for cooking. ... nah okay yeah, it's almost always gonna be Chris. He gives her a shy sort of grin when she shows up, shrugs. ]

If you want to call this baking. I'm mostly trying to see if this stuff works like I think it will.

Whatever it is, it seems like it'll be closer than anything we've made so far. Do you need help?

[ At the question, Chris pauses and looks around in consideration. ]

Um... I guess if you want to see what that test I put in the fridge is looking like right now. Not sure if I need to put more of the softer stuff in or less to make it the right feel.

[Asking her to eat the thing? No problem, Chris. Shirley fetches a spoon and takes the batch out of the fridge, trying a spoonful and chewing thoughtfully.]

I think it would be nice if it were a little stiffer, but it's still very good.

[ Chris watches her expression, sets his current batch down and dips a finger in to test for himself. ]

Yeah, it's a little too gooey, isn't it? Hm.

[ He goes over to the protein dispenser and mucks around with it until he's got enough, then moves to the tiny counter and starts to chop it and dice it and basically make it something mixable. ]

What about the peanut butter? Too much?
