You're speaking to the First Mate on the Caprine now, I guess. If any other first mates want to give me advice on my duties, that sounds grand.

[ A wink, yeah, he's already figured out about how much a first mate does (or does not) do. Mostly he figured McCoy might not mind what help he could give. ]

And for everyone new or new-ish on the Caprine, which might even include me, welcome.

Maybe we can have a party when we leave this system. It can double as a 'thank Morrígan no one expects us to be fish anymore' party.

If anyone wants to fetch alcohol from this planet while you're out, we can probably find a way to drink it.

[ Kai's mostly wandering through the Caprine now, trying to at least inventory what they already have. What previous crew members might have left behind and still hasn't been claimed. He knows McCoy is going to be on the planet, helping. It's just that Kai would be useless on two counts if he'd gone with, and he does feel a bit bad about it. ]

I have been first mate on the Tourist for some time. I cannot promise my advice would work for you and your ship, I feel each is unique in that regard, but I will answer any questions you might have as best I can.

Hm, it is important that they have someone to fall back on, even if they don't think so at the time.

Do not be afraid to disagree with your captain, and tell them as such. You are there to support them, yes, but you are also a fresh pair of eyes. You are there to see what they may miss, to see something from another angle. You should always feel free to speak your mind. A good captain should not dismiss your words, they should take them on board- learn from them.

[ As a general rule, sure, but also for this role he's stepped up for. The balance between loyalty and thinking for oneself can be a hard one to walk. ]

I think it's a pretty good one. He's a hard man to dislike, and he really cares about the medical aspect of things.

[ Plus, Kai's had the opportunity to share a drink with him a couple of times. ]

I think we get on. He told me to go ahead when I talked to him about becoming his first mate.

I do, actually. Kirk can be...frustrating at times, but he is a good man, I am proud to serve under him. And I care for my crew a great deal, they are family to me.

[ Kai can understand the difficulty of that sort of thing, and part of him does want the comfort of knowing he belongs with a ship.

It's convenient, in a way, that Kirk doesn't seem to be an asshole. ]

It's got to be hard, with people transferring off and on all the time. Got any tips for making sure you stay a team?

We eat together a lot, spend time talking, or sometimes not. I would suggest simply living with one another, get to know each other through the simple daily things.

It is somewhat like that, yes. It takes effort on both sides for it to work.

[ Half joking and half, well. There's a reason Kai doesn't do relationships beyond the casual and sexual.

If you feel like it does not suit you, you can always sign the paperwork and step down. There is little harm in trying.

...On occasion. I have had to step up when Kirk has been...asleep. It was not as difficult as it seems, though it is not a responsibility I would wish for permanently.
