[Lumière's been enjoying the sights and the sounds of the city. Of course, he can't wear any of the fancy things he finds, but he can window shop and dream. He eventually catches sight of Felix, remembers him from his calibration and hops up to him with a wave of a candlestick. ]

Bonjour, monsieur! I see you are enjoying the fine shopping on offer.

[Most of what he's seen of Lumière had been of the man and not the candle, and though he'd been presented with the idea of what the curse had done to him, it still takes a long moment of stunned silence for Felix to connect those two threads, his hands paused in his inspection of a rack of waistcoats.

Eventually he recovers, and his hands and mouth remember themselves]

...well, it's not often we have such an opportunity. It seems I can only find good tailoring every few planets.

[Honestly, Lumière is glad some people have met him as a man first. It's one thing he can be glad of the Calibrations for. AT least he was himself for a little while. He stands patiently, waiting for Felix to get over the shock. He gets it. It's weird.]

That is a tragedy- that so many of these worlds have to live without a sense of style. I feel sorry for them.

The blue one with the green accents is very fetching.

Undoubtedly they do have a sense of style, just not one I would personally recognize as such. You could make a shirt with seashells and gold filaments, but I wouldn't personally want to wear such a thing...

He gives the mentioned waistcoat a passing look, nodding]

Yes...though I have quite a bit of blue already. You have a good eye.

[For a candle, though he continues idly searching the rack instead of saying so. He's at least seen what Lumiere's style would have been in the flesh and it wasn't much different from what he'd been used to, and he's not in the mood today to be mean]

[He's pulling a face. Why would anyone do that to themselves? Who would suffer such a eyesore in their life?

He appreciates the lack of meanness. Honestly, Lumière would much prefer to be shopping for himself, but he's in no position for that currently. But hey, he gets its hard to shop for yourself when you have red hair. You have to clash or struggle, those are your two choices.]

Merci, monsieur. I like to think I do, too. It is not my area of expertise, but you still need to know how to make an impression, no?

[Felix mostly shrugs at the seashells comment as he pulls out a rose pink waistcoat to inspect, clearly considering the clashing option]

I certainly prefer to, though...were those standards your own, or your master's?

[Felix no. Not pink. Don't do that to yourself. Still, he'd noticed Felix's reaction in his calibration, there's nothing good- fuelling a reaction like that.]

My own. My master doesn't dictate much of my life, monsieur, much less what I wear. I work for him - and get paid well for my services; he has my loyalty- but he does not control me.

Good. Though I don't mean to say it would mean he'd entirely be a tyrant for asking for a certain standard for you...the impression of his staff likely is an extension of himself, after all.

[It's not just that he's twitchy about the M-word, but also that Mildmay insisted on wearing black to suit the traditional role as his esclavin under the binding by forms. Felix has hated it, of course, but he could not argue with the weight of history and symbolism.]

True, I am the more...public face of the household. It is my job to be sure guests of the castle are catered for. Hence, I make sure I look my best.

I have to say it's refreshing to meet someone who shares some of my tastes. It's rare I meet someone who knows what a cravat is, let alone how to tie one.

It is truly tragic, mon ami. The modern day 'fashion' [he moves his little candle hands like he's doing finger quotes] is confusing at best. How on earth do they make an impression in parties?

I've gotten the impression it involves less clothing instead of more.

I don't mind an early exit from a soirée, if the reason in compelling enough. Disrobing before that would be particularly gauche, even for me.

Ah, but you might find a compelling enough reason to duck out and return later. The trick is doing it and making sure no one has even realised you have left.

Certainly not my Master- though he was rather young at the time. Still, dignitaries and nobles need to be made to feel important, no matter what the host's...situation.

Unfortunately, not. Back home, we do not get any visitors, not until Belle and her father. I have not had the opportunity for quite some time. Something I plant to make up for here.

[He pauses to hold up a waistcoat of satin the color of chocolate with matching embroidery] What do you think of this one? Darker than my usual choice, but quite nice.

[Lumière tilts his 'head' to one side in consideration. ]

That will look quite fetching, mon ami. I believe there is a cravat a few stalls over which would go with it perfectly, too!
