Okay, as it turns out... it's really hard to get in contact with people when you don't have their names or their ships or their numbers. Earth, yeah... but it's not the same as whatever else everyone else is from. Mine is better, anyway.

[ That actually gets a surprised look, then a jaded smile. ]

Nobody ever thinks of it like that. Anybody like me usually just gets handed powers whenever they want.

[He scowls.]

That must be nice. Unfortunately, anyone who just handed over what I need would probably die from the pain.

The real world isn't that generous. People already have to fight for shelter, for food. For a place to belong. And if they don't get those things, they die.

It's cruel enough without adding something like magic dependency on top of it.

[ That gets a glare in return. ]

I fucking know that. My point's that I'm fucked if I do, fucked if I don't, and you're the first person to notice. And you're not even from there.

Elves have always been dependent on magic to survive. With the absence of the Sunwell, it means we have to draw magic from other sources. That is why I warned you not to take Adra's powers.

Well, yes and no. I'm talking about social reconstruction here. Part of the reason why the world is so corrupt is because of the people who run it.

[ That gets a scoff. ]

And stopping the people who run it would take so much power and influence that it's practically impossible. No matter where you go, I bet.

It isn't impossible. There are multiple ways to get power: knowledge, money, achievements... After that, it's a matter of knowing how to play the game.

But if you don't have an appetite for politics, it does make things more difficult. I despise all the passive-aggressive court dances. I've always been straightforward, and I'll continue being that way when I am a magister.

I stay clear of politics whenever possible. If I could just push my way through and make this whole shitshow stop, I'd have done it already.

[A sigh.] I understand that, too. I'm an apprentice to someone with a notable position, and I will inherit that position when he abdicates. It's... a waiting game.

At least you've got something at the end of the tunnel. Waiting's not even an option for me.

I worked very hard to get here. I'm still overlooked most of the time because of my apparent age and my common blood, even if I have the skills necessary to become a magister.

Find stability, and the rest will follow. That's... what I was always told.
