[ He's standing in the cargo hold, dressed in the dark black utility jumpers, when the new passengers arrive, and offers a polite, if worn, smile to each one. ]

[ Guess who is determined to find out what every single button on this microwave does. ]

[ If one got over the how and why and what the hells of it, it was actually pretty cool being on a spaceship. The ship was a little cramped and there didn't seem to be a large variety of uniform colours, but that really wasn't much different from being in the Army. He's already taken stock of all the equipment they have and double-checked it, so he ends up sitting in the captain's chair. Close his eyes and he might as well be on Star Trek. This'd be a great thing to tell Steve if — oh. Well. That wasn't really an option. ]

[ He drums his fingers idly on the chair and whistles quietly. ]

I wonder if it does warp speed...

[Ohhhh boy. Leanne's not exactly that great with some of the technology on the ship, but...

Well, that still just doesn't look very safe.]

Um, I... [She huffs out a laugh.] Is that really working?

[She could, possibly, go and at least pretend to do her job, as much as she can do her job at the moment, anyway, but...

...It's not as if anyone will really miss tactical support for a while anyway, right? Especially not when there's new crew members to meet. Maybe even visitors!

Which is how Leanne can be found flitting between the bridge and the cargo hold, a smile and a wave ready for anyone she comes across.]

Hey! How're you doing?

[ He's being careful, honest. ]

Yeah, it's just — not like anything I've seen before. [ gesturing to it ] You hungry?

[A shake of her head, though she's smiling now.]

Tell me about it. It kinda looks like a TV, but I reeaaally don't think TVs are supposed to do that.

[And, with a shrug,] Maybe a little, but I don't know about using that!

[ The huff of a laugh, as he steps back to let her examine it. He remembers the first time he saw one of these, it'd seemed equally wondrous and stupid. Stoves existed, didn't they? So did metal pots and pans? But microwave dinners were a Future Thing. ]

This is a lot more useful than a TV. Here, this button does the heating for you.

Yeah, I guess a TV won't... [She trails off, leaning forward, eyes bright.

Whoa! That's a lot easier than she thought it'd be.]

Wait, seriously? That's it? Then why's it got so many buttons!

[ He smiles reflexively at her enthusiasm. ]

Yeah — this one's the timer. Some things you can't leave in too long or they'll start [ he gestures a poof with his hands ]. This one's for the extra cold stuff... I think.

Wow. Okay, that's more complicated than I thought. [A shake of her head. You gotta figure out how long to leave things in? But how?] But pretty impressive if it can do all of that.

[She can barely work a stove, okay, it's kind of extra impressive to her.

A pause and,] Thanks. For explaining it. I guess I hadn't really asked anyone or anything...

No problem. Wonders of the modern world, I s'pose.

[ Another brief smile. ]

What kind of world are you from, Miss?

A really different one. [A touch wry, a touch self-deprecating. No matter how many times she tries, it's still hard to explain Basel.]

We don't have anything like this, you know? And we can't go a lot of places like we can on these ships. It's just... [She shrugs.] A lot of walls and a lot of metal and elevators, I guess!

It... It probably just sounds really weird. Maybe you should tell me about your world instead!

[Vima's heading for the bridge, too. She's suddenly got piloting skills thanks to the implant--that's really creepy, although she thinks piloting is a lot of fun--so she'd better check out the cockpit. She's still in her regular clothes, not willing to don one of the ugly space-prisoner-holostar uniforms yet.]

Oh, hey there. You're the captain of our little tub, huh? I'm your new pilot.

That'd be me, Miss.

[ He stands when she enters the room, and goes to greet her, holding out his hand. ]

James Barnes. Most people call me Jim.

[She shakes his hand. James Barnes? So many odd names.]

Vima Sunrider. [She puts her hands on her hips, looking around apprasingly. It's nothing like the sleek Marisiva--more like the things Vima is used to. Very utilitarian.] It's not much, but I guess this is what we've got to work with, huh? Should be interesting.

[Vima is spending most of her time on the bridge, since that's what her job is going to be. She grins at the blonde girl who pops in.]

For being kidnapped and dragooned into someone else's entertainment empire? Not so bad. [In spite of her words, she does actually seem pretty upbeat.] I'm Vima Sunrider. You must be one of my crewmates.

[Leanne laughs, shaking her head.]

I guess that's probably important too right now. Probably.

But that's right! I'm Leanne. [In an undertone,] Tactical Support.

It's really great to meet you, Vima! [Vima Sunrider... Wow, what a pretty name!]

Pleased to meet you.

[ He retreats to the captain's chair, but not before gesturing her towards the pilot's seat. ]

Let's see what we've got, huh?

[ A different one she can't put into words, well, that's familiar. It sounds like an underground place, but she hasn't volunteered anything else, so Bucky switches tracks with her. ]

First time I'm seein' something like these ships outside a'TV too. What d'you want to know about mine?

[Jim sitting down in that chair brings home just how weird this is. He's a captain, she's a subordinate, and it's all part of this weird space show? She didn't know any of this existed a few days ago.

Still, she slips into the pilot's chair without hesitation. Vima has always enjoyed the idea of being a bona-fide pilot. She'd rather have learned how to do it on her own, but at least she's less likely to crash with a ready-made brain upload ~~creepy as that is~~.]

Aye aye, captain. [She starts to take the ship through some basic maneuvers. Up, down... might as well give it a quick turn just to see how nimble it is, right?]

You too! [Leanne is obviously older than her, but Vima likes her already. Maybe she's found a friend? But what Leanne gives as her job title is kind of worrisome.] When you say tactical support... does that mean we're going to be getting into battles?

[With... the other ships? But everyone Vima talked to on her first broadcast seemed too friendly, unless they're just war games.]

You really saw them on TV? [Whoooaaaa, what kind of TV do they have where he's from?!]

Awesome! Does that mean your world already knows about a lot of things like that? Is it really advanced? Just... [A laugh.] Not as advanced as this?

Yeah it's uh — [ he starts gesticulating ] made up? How we think ships like this might look when we make them. I s'pose we're advanced enough....

Oh! They're stories, right? I get it! I guess it makes sense for a world like that!

Do you have a lot of stories like that? I don't... really know how advanced worlds are supposed to be like, I guess.

[She's a bit sheltered, okay.]

Um... [She huffs out a breath. Ohhh boy. How is she supposed to explain this?] I don't really know.

Someone told me that... before I got here, all the ships got attacked, but... [Another laugh, probably not very convincing.]

I still haven't seen anything like that happen here. Nothing bad's happened!

We have a couple. Less so these days.

[ The moon landing was almost fifty years ago, and few people've gone since. It's a real blow for a future he thought would be brighter than the one he and Steve had imagined. ]
