[Kairi's used to having people walking into the kitchen all the time when she's working. Normally she doesn't pay it much mind, until they say something to her. But when this person lingers without saying anything, she looks up and... realizes she has no idea who he is. Uh.]

Oh, hello. Are you looking for someone?

[catamite]

Oh... sorry. No, um...

[he puts down whatever he was looking at, and smiles. like he's just now realizing that he's trespassing in someone else's kitchen and that isn't exactly considered polite.]

--Well, I mean, I am. But I was just... looking around right now...

[Hey, it's an impressive kitchen, one of the best in the whole fleet. She can't blame him for staring. In fact, she's not upset at all, and offers him a comforting smile.]

It's all right. Who were you looking for?

[he eases up a little, but still hunches his shoulders sheepishly--as if she was a much larger, more imposing person than she really seems right now.]

Doctor, uh... [does he remember a last name? nope.] Beverly.

Oh! Beverly. You can probably find her in the medical lab. I could show you the way if you like?

You don't have to do that. I think I know where it is, if all the ships are kind of set up the same way.

[which means him ending up in the kitchen probably wasn't because he was lost.]

Oh, okay.

[Awwwwwwkward pause.]

Um... are you hungry?

Ah, no, I'm fine.

[...yeah, he's not really helping with the awkwardness here. and there's another beat or two of silence before he realizes that there's something else he should probably say.]

[No he's kind of not. Kairi is struggling to think of something to say when he introduces himself.]

Nice to meet you, Nel. I'm Kairi. I'm... obviously the ship's cook. What do you do on your ship?

[some of the awkwardness switches out for a look of pretty clear jealousy, there.]

Oh man, this ship has a cook? We don't have a cook...

I'm just, um. [what's the word? give him a sec...] A communications... person.

It's sort of a necessity around here, given the appetites of some of the crew members.

Oh! That's got to be kind of fun, right? I wish I knew how half that equipment worked.

[he laughs a little, and tries to look more way enthused about it than he actually is. he's still freaked out by the whole thing, to be honest.]

You can do some cool stuff with it, like talk in secret and stuff. But otherwise it's kind of... weird. I don't know.

Hmm. I can understand that. Especially if you've never been around stuff like this. I never saw anything like it before I got here.

[She assumes that's the case with him, anyway.]

Talk in secret, huh? So is that like sending encoded messages?

Yeah! It's sometimes cool when all the comms people set up an encrypted channel to talk on. That can be fun... You get good gossip that way.

[and he shrugs again.]

The rest of it is weird, though... you're supposed to answer calls and be all official and... I don't really do that kind of stuff normally.
