[Some of you might recognize that cool, measured voice coming from your comm. Others might just hear a competent woman with a tone light enough to seem careless, at first, until the words sink in and you find the steel underneath them.]

Funny how some of us just seemed to go a little out of character these last couple weeks. I'd expected some complications from the implant, but personality changes? Seems like an easy way to rig the ratings. Cheap, if you want my opinion, but they don't really ask around here.

I'm Natasha, ship's counselor over on the Windrose. I'll be in my office most of the day over the course of the next week. If you'd like to make an appointment, let me know. I'd be happy to talk with each of you, regardless of your ship affiliation. And, of course, anything that passes between us is completely confidential.

I've got plenty of experience talking to strangers, and plenty of experience dealing with unsettled minds. I know how to keep a secret, and when to share my own. Guess that makes me counselor enough, in most senses of the word.

What exactly do you mean by "unsettled minds?"

[Of course that's what Cassandra fixes on.]

I worked with a lot of different types of people back home. In my experience, the more money and power someone has, the more "eccentric" they turn out to be. And eccentric is just what you call batshit crazy when it can afford to buy you and your entire family, and a small island to keep you on. You learn how to handle that fast.

Money and power do often afford one certain...privileges. But that doesn't entirely answer my question either. Are you talking about relatively harmless individuals?

Some of them. But I guess it depends on your definition of harmless. Looking for my life story, or just my credentials?

[She's not defensive, or doesn't sound like it, anyway. Just curious.]

I would like to have a better understanding of you. Whichever you believe would satisfy that is enough for me.

It's a little hard to understand someone from one conversation. People are complicated. That's why shows like this exist. They take complicated people and break them down into one-sentence soundbites. Make them simple. I'm not simple. I don't think you are, either.

If you want to get to know me, why not come talk to me? Not as a counselor, just as another person who's stuck here, just like you.

You know, Cassandra, when we're talking, I'm never quite sure if it's a conversation or an interrogation.

[she doesn't mean offense by it, in any way. Just sounds a little wry, maybe.]
