Since it seems like the Iskaulit is going to be staying with us for a while, I'm kicking around the idea of converting a room or two into a medical clinic of sorts. Since not every ship has a medbay, it'd be useful for people on those ships to have another option, or for people who want a bit more privacy if they need a checkup or to get an injury looked at.

I know our medics are stretched pretty thin, though. Would this idea be feasible? I'm not sure, but I though it was worth bringing up anyway.

It'd be worth finding out. I had to teach people back home, since teams going out on missions to remote areas would often have to take care of minor things themselves, and if it was something major, at least be able to stop bleeding or splint a broken bone until a medical team got there.

We did the same thing: everyone in Starfleet is trained for that, in case medical personnel couldn't get to them immediately. And there's even more chance of that happening here, when we don't have a full medical staff.

The Stargate program did that with soldiers, I think, but the scientists got into far more danger than they were anticipating on Atlantis. And then, of course, we had allies who were native to the Pegasus Galaxy and had never seen some of our equipment or supplies before, let alone used it.

That's really the big issue here... we all come from such different universes and times and places, with different methods of healing and levels of technology. Something like the blood drive, that you and I might take as a matter of course, can be alarming to someone who has never encountered one before.

Yeah, exactly. Or if they're used to healing through herbs and potions and have never even thought about performing surgery or using a scanner to look inside someone. So if I could help give them a leg up, it would benefit everyone.

It's definitely a good place to start, and is something we can do now, even if we can't get the clinic up and running quite yet. And I'm sure other people have things to teach us as well! Herbs and potions are not something we should dismiss off hand.

Exactly- I won't turn down anything that might prove useful in helping a patient. Technology can fail or supplies can run out at the worst possible time.

I have been in that situation before and I would rather not relive it. We've been lucky so far but I don't want to put our trust in Atroma's good graces.

I've been pretty lucky in my career so far, but you're right- I wasn't exactly living in a reality show where the showrunners can flip a switch and make our equipment malfunction or shut off to their whims, either.

I don't quite feel like Atroma would kill us- yet- but after what's happened since we got here, I don't trust them to not do things to make our job harder.

Personally, I'm still not convinced they didn't have something to do with the infection in the first place.

Like how we suspected they were behind that time those ships attacked us? I wouldn't doubt it at all. They needed to do something to ramp up the drama.

If it's true, they're even more despicable than I thought. This isn't how "reality shows" work in your world is it?

Not especially. I mean, the contestants are sometimes put through hardship, but mostly the shows are manipulated via editing and coaching people to act a certain way. They're playing a part almost as much as a professional actor would. And reality shows tend to have people standing by at all times so the contestants are never in any real danger.

I see. I must admit that I still don't I understand the appeal, but that sounds a lot more reasonable than what Atroma's doing.

I don't, either, honestly- but people love them, so, here we are. I wonder if Atroma was inspired by Earth's reality shows and didn't understand that behind the scenes there wasn't much "reality" going on?

I never considered that. Wouldn't be the first time aliens have misconstrued human culture though.

Yeah, exactly. I mean, there are plenty of humans who don't understand that what they see on TV is more or less a carefully-scripted program, so I can see aliens totally missing the point.

It's certainly an interesting theory. Still, if this was simply a misunderstanding, surely a year in they would have realized their mistake.

Yeah... there is that. Surely there have to have been people who have come before me who came from Earth and knew how reality shows work that they could have learned from.

So, I guess I'll go back to the theory that they're just assholes.

That seems the most likely, yes.

I do always try to see the best in people, but sometimes there's no other explanation than the simplest one.
