[Which, amazingly, hasn't happened in a while.]

[Sweet, permission granted. Kazuto nods and replaces the panel he'd been working on, then climbs back to his feet, dusting off his knees.]

Don't worry, I won't get in your way. I'm pretty useless when it comes to medical stuff- knowing me, I'm more likely to be the patient.

[Such is his luck. He's hoping this guy is decent at his job.]

Hopefully that won't happen too often. [He gives Kirito the once-over, as if he were one of Stefan's patients, before nodding in approval. Once Stefan's sure they're ready to go, he turns back towards the lab.] I can patch you back up every time, but medics try to avoid repeat customers.

[Stefan's a big fan of "healing via blood-drinking," but he's good at healing people the human way too.]

[Kazuto's so used to healing potions that it's entirely possible he could be convinced to try it at least once...]

I probably won't see much action from the engine room, at least. Maybe whoever picked the job for me did that on purpose.

Probably. You just never know what happens when you venture off this ship. [He's teasing, mostly.]

We've been drifting for a while this time, but they drop us off at various planets every so often. I've only been to the one, though I've been told some can get pretty adventurous.

Dare I ask how? Just so I can prepare myself for it, if or when it happens.

[He's hiding it decently well, but he's feeling kind of nervous, hearing so much about what could happen in the future; since it's not a game, he's completely unarmed and not especially strong in real life, he has good cause to be uneasy. Even having one of Suguha's practice swords would make him feel better.]

[Stefan tilts his head to the side as they enter the lab. It's true that Kirito isn't the strongest out of them - that award would probably go to Stefan or Alex - but it's nothing a little training can't fix.]

I'm not exactly an expert, but if you're feeling a little uneasy... I can teach you basic hand-to-hand. We've got room in the cargo hold, and I've got enough experience that you won't be totally off-guard if you ever have to fight.

[Huh, he hadn't expected that. Kazuto nods slowly, considering the offer.]

I know some basics already, but I could definitely use more practice.

[Especially since the majority of his "training" took place in virtual worlds, and while the knowledge converts IRL, the automatic skills to not. He can't just activate a special attack with a certain hand gesture anymore.]

Sure. Just tell me whenever you're in the mood, and we'll head down there.

[Granted, he's not sure how good his technique is, because vampires tend to overpower people with raw strength - but any little bit would help, and it's better than staring at processed protein all day. Thankfully, the lab's also a lot cleaner than it was a few weeks ago, so Stefan steps to the side to allow Kirito to inspect anything and everything.]

And uh, welcome to the medbay. I hope you don't have to come down here as a patient, but you can poke around everything. If there's something that looks unfamiliar, I can probably explain it too.

[Yeaaaah, don't expect Kazuto to be able to physically keep up. He's still a bit in his post-coma recovery and is as squishy as humans get.

He browses around the room, getting a quick look at the layout and the machinery within. He's familiar with some medical equipment, but he hadn't been entirely sure what to expect from a med bay in space.

Actually, it looks pretty normal.]

What kind of medical treatments can be performed here? I mean, how serious would the injuries you can handle here be?

[Good question. There's imaging devices, and auto-injectors, and whatever medicine he would need for their crew. Plus dietary supplements like his blood pills, though he keeps those in the kitchen.

Stefan furrows his brow, inadvertently staring down at his wrist because truthfully, his blood makes this a place that can cure nearly anything.] I'd say anything that doesn't require a major surgery.

So, your basic stitches and broken leg can be patched up here, but, I don't know, bypass surgery probably isn't happening. [Headtilt.] Thankfully, I haven't had to deal with anything major yet.

[It's a nice range of equipment, and he makes a mental inventory of them, just in case something comes up. He's still new to his duties and isn't sure if the engineering augment includes maintaining the rest of the machinery on the ship, but even if it doesn't, it certainly couldn't hurt to learn more. They can't be that much more complicated than what he's used to.]

If there was an injury that serious, chances are the rest of the ship would be in trouble, too, unless some people here just hate each other. Hopefully we'll be okay from now on.

Or someone let James do the loop-de-loops again. [He's only partially joking. He almost lost a microscope because they flew too close to an asteroid!]

But yeah, I think we'll be fine too. Equipment's pretty durable, and since it restocks itself, I haven't had to order anything major. [Beat] Except for the stuff I ordered, because I could.

[He's a little science nerd and he knows it, at least?]

[Kirito's kind of glad he'd been in the engine room and therefore hadn't seen just how dangerous dogfights in space could get. He can imagine, though- he's seen them in movies, and this is pretty much a movie come to life, so.]

I won't claim to know anything about medical equipment, but I'm handy with machinery, so if anything gives you trouble, let me know. I might be able to do something with it.

[No promises, but hey, what else are engineers for if not go-to fix-it men?]

[Now that, he hadn't expected. Stefan raises an eyebrow, trying not to sound as surprised as he feels--]

Stefan's not particularly sure - he covered what was important to him and what he thought Kirito was interested in.] I know I'm the assigned tech, but if you wanna learn the basics, I can cover that too. I figure, I may not be around immediately if something happens while we're on a planet or waystation.

What, like teach me first aid?

[That sounds useful and also a terrible idea. He would totally abuse that skill. (Alternatively, he would be terrible at it.]

Don't suppose you can share any healing spells.

Nnnno? Magic isn't really my thing.

[Laws of nature, bro: vampires are too dead to learn a spell or two. While there IS a witch on board, it's not his secret to give, so Stefan'll hold back on that knowledge for now.] I was going more for the old-fashioned kind of first aid, with band-aids and anti-bacterial spray. If you're after healing magic, you're better off making a broadcast. I've seen a few around, but not well enough to ask on your behalf.

Nah, I seriously doubt it's possible for me, either. But this place is so weird already, I thought I'd ask.

[It's nothing more than wishful thinking on his part- in ALO, he'd never personally learned a healing spell, since magic was ill-suited for him and he was always surrounded by far superior casters of it. And here he's just in his normal body, so magic is physically impossible.]
