[She stares at the cards he's unearthed and then adds one to the stacks below. It unlocks a few options for them and she starts shuffling cards on the stacks around, revealing what was hidden.]

That sounds like it'd be fun... although we don't really have chores. I love card games...

I am pretty sure someone should clean off the gunk gathering on the protein machines. And the bathrooms. And there's still dust in the cargo hold from that stupid planet--trust me, we could think of a few chores.

[he watches her shuffle cards around, but will let her have the first new move.]

Or dares, or... something like that. You've just got to use some imagination.

[She uncovers a few cards and sticks another ace up with the rest of their stacks. She seems to be concentrating pretty completely on this fairly trivial game, but at least she's awake and concentrating on something instead of buried under her covers alternating eating protein stuff without any interest at all, and sleeping.]

Okay... that sounds fine. I'm sure Michael will be easy to persuade and I doubt Riku will be that much harder.

Who else? Cecil, maybe. Nel can come if he keeps his clothes on.

[which was a joke. probably. he's got a card to match up, but after looking for a second, points to one of their columns--]

Do I have to keep this one here, or can I move it? Because it would go here, right?

[She laughs anyway, a little gurgle in her throat.] Maybe Kaneis...

Um. [Rin squints, touches her lips, then blinks and relaxes.] Mmm-hm. Good. Go ahead.

[And the card he uncovers... doesn't match with anything. Rin unfolds another three from the deck.]

Kaneis, yeah. That guy's all right.

[oh, that's an ace! he starts their third stack.]

He seems pretty carefully... uninvolved, to me. But that's not always a bad thing.

[Aw yeah that means she can pop up the two resting on the stacks below. They're off to a nice build on this game.]

He's kind of a cynic I think... [Not that she can exactly talk, or judge.] But not... bad. I think. [Glowing endorsement here.]

He might like to play at least.

Yeah. [he looks at everything on their layout, but doesn't move.] I can't think of anyone else... We're a small little group, out here in space.

It's kinda strange. I'm used to seeing more people come through. [She draws another three. Pulls down an eight onto a nine, and a seven on top of that; shuffles a six over.] The first place I was in was a laboratory. Still more people than this, though, I think.

You've never mentioned a laboratory before.

[oh hang on let him move this starter five onto that six. and this card onto an ace stack. oh yeah, moving right along.]

You didn't ask. [And then she laughs, short and sharp.] And it's not exactly a fun conversation topic. There's been the lab, [ticking off on her fingers] the Port, Exsilium, and I guess you and Nel and the court. [Because why not. Not moving any cards, briefly distracted by her exposition.]

A port, too... And I thought I'd been everywhere.

[he'll go ahead and turn over the next three cards for her, pick up a card--but oh, it doesn't actually go here.] --Ah, nope. [he'll put it back.]

Mm... it was on an island but nobody could leave. If you tried to go too far, you could even die. There was something called the "Core" there that pulled you in. Everyone who came there got a power if they didn't have one... that's where I got mine.

[A lot of memories from Siren's Port, both bad and good - predominantly good, for what a shithole it was. What a surprise. A lot of people she misses from there, too. She pulls another three off the deck and plonks a two down on their piles of aces.]

Hm... Interesting that it stuck.

[now it's his turn to pause and think instead of playing...]

You must carry a lot of ghosts... [said almost to himself, and very casually. maybe that's a common thing to say where he's from.]

[It just makes her laugh under her breath. It's barely a laugh, really.]

A lot of people died in that lab. There was a time when I could've named just about all of them for you.

Yeah... I know the feeling.

[he chains up a few cards to the ace stacks.]

Sounds like a horrible place.

[She still misses some of the people. Hopefully they're elsewhere... somewhere better off... as small as the chances of that are...]

There were some good people there. My friend Hisoka... and Matt... and General Marian... he got a crucifix sewed inside him once because he made the staff mad. But he still wouldn't tell them anything.

[Sounding just... twistedly nostalgic. She pulls another three cards off the deck. Oh, they can put that on the cards underneath... and then move one over... and then, oop, put another card on the ace piles.]

We might win this one.

[you know, for a normal person, it does sound very worrying. Robin, though, can put himself in her shoes a little too easily--in the way that he's been living in very similar shoes for several thousand years.

so, with a humor he probably shouldn't be encouraging:]

You're talking about the game and not some grand statement about our situations, right?

[She actually does laugh at that, the same not-exactly-kind-and-joyous laughter that circumstances usually spur out of her.]

I already know about the situation.

[Which is to say, she's not going to win it, she's already sure. Maybe Robin will. Who knows.]

Hm... [goodness, Rin. he reaches forward to move another card.] You know what you sound like?

No, but you're gonna tell me, right?

[Oh nice, he uncovered something usable. She flips it around... they have some long stacks going now. Forth ace uncovered. She pops it up and starts stacking cards up on them, as far as seems sensible.]

Mmhm. You sound like an old person.

[he deftly sneaks a card on a pile around her movements and flips--two cards over. are they at the end of the deck?]

[Dead voice.]

That's pretty harsh, from the most geezer of them all.

[Also: they are indeed! Now they can start again... with everything changed up from the cards they put down already OuO]

[after a second of trying to hide it, he bursts into well-meaning and genuine laughter--a little strange, a little off, but very much Robin.]

I meant it as a compliment, honestly!

Yeah... [She doesn't laugh, but she smirks for a moment.]
