I don't understand. [The screen is black, the voice is ragged, raw. Wet with sobs that gasp and hiccup out of him. The comm scrapes against the floor of the ship and a glimpse of space can be seen ] I-it's dark. She-[He chokes, splutters, coughs.]-She's gone. Is this... [A deep, bedraggled breath. The screen brightens, adjusting to the color of fluorescent lights and a young man's weary face, wet with tears. Despite his appearance, he's smiling. The kind of smile seen at births, marriages, a baby's first step. He's overcome with emotion, excited and battling it, fighting disbelief in order to confirm that this, any of this is real.]

This is a communication system. I don't-[He swipes a hand across his face, wiping his eyes clear.]-I don't know how I know that but... [muttering:]... it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. Whoever's out there-[He chokes again, this time laughing.]-Goddess. I really am. Above the clouds. In her domain. I never-[He swallows, trying to contain his excitement again.]-I never thought this would happen. I could never even imagine it. Not like this. Not-Goddess.

[Falling back to one hand he sighs, pulling a hand through his tired hair, loose waves spilling between his fingertips. After a few minutes, he seems to remember that he's broadcasting. Eyes glimmering with elation, he leans forward, unable to stop the smile from spreading across his face.]

Please. Anyone. Tell me. [He turns the comm quickly and presses it against the glass. The screen fills with the void of space, stars glittering in their myriad.] Has night finally come?

[the fleet has been clear of the musical signals for a day or so... but things still aren't quite right. signals occasionally fail, there is static in the wires. and, apparently, the ships' scanning equipment hasn't been as sensitive as it should be.

it isn't until the fleet is far from the last planet's range that some kind of invisible cloud clears... and several blips show up on every ship's radar. those ships that have a communications officer on-board will actually hear a little alert. and those that don't may miss it entirely, if no one else on board happens to glance at the monitors.

--you aren't alone.

for the first time, there is something showing up on the scanners that isn't the innocuous signatures of local traffic between stations, or the lone, short-range ships out doing their jobs. this is something else.

the communications officers and pilots can attempt to scan them, maybe try and hail... but they lie at the absolute far edge of the equipment's range. just hovering--maybe watching, maybe waiting. maybe not realizing that the drifting fleet is unblinded enough to see them. and there's no telling how long they may have been there.

and once noticed, they only remain for a few minutes before disappearing again into the black.]

...

ooc: this is an entirely-optional mini-event. you can reply or not, and there is no rush to do so. the ships on the radar cannot actually be reached, and will disappear regardless of what is attempted. but if you want to try anyway, post reactions, etc., go ahead and knock yourself out here. they won't answer, but maybe they are listening regardless. this can also be used as a mingle, if anyone wants to talk to each other, or try to bludgeon their communications officer into getting off their butts to actually do anything.

this is just a small event, or clue, and can be played with or ignored as you all wish! enjoy!

the entire fleet is then treated to the distinct sound of sickened retching... followed by a few clatters... and something small, wet, and heavy hitting the floor.

anyone aboard the SS Pathstone and happening by the network station that Tek is using will have it a little worse, however. he has puked up a little bit of a mess--mostly consisting of oily black liquid, a couple of half-digested coins... and a shiny red gem.

I wish they'd put some movies on this thing or something. It wouldn't have been hard. I'm pretty sure movies are in my list of top ten modern world things. Chocolate and hot running water are on the list too. Concidentally neither of those things are around here either. Maybe it's not a place for modern technology after all??

[That's a joke, yeah.]

Also on my wishlist: they could put a chess game on here or something. We could be playing Mahjong. That would be so easy. I guess we're meant to be here driving each other crazy instead.

Anyway top ten five modern inventions:
1. movies
2. medicinal things I guess
3. chocolate. I don't know if it's modern but I never had it at home.
4. Hot running water.
5. Newspapers.

[ The feed starts off as video first, before switching through the various modes of voice, text, and quickly skimming through the archives. Sooner or later, he flips it back to video. Figuring it'd be best to switch and leave the mode as is, the last thing he wanted was to be accused of poking through things he wasn't supposed to. ]

The feed seems to play on other stations like this one. Saves in the archives as it runs, too. Think our boss has something to do with this?

[ Sliding off his old guard mask, he tilts his head towards someone off screen. Though their voice is caught easily enough. ]

Hard to say. Someone obviously is responsible for this. [ Her voice is strained and ends on a huff, while she zips the suit up as high as it can go, giving it an extra tug even though it is at its limits. ] Regardless, we should stay on our toes.

Well, I don't think we're gonna start connecting the dots on our own anytime soon. So might as well ask... [ At least there seemed to be somewhat helpful replies on the announcements he'd sifted through. With that, he crosses his arms and after a minute or so of shifting and leaning on the edge of the desk; he asks: ] Anyone out there mind filling us in on all this?

[ Not questioning why he knows vague ideas of space and space travel all of a sudden, either. ]

( action )
[ To anyone still milling about the Marsiva, two middle aged teenagers are currently standing around the comms station a little after their broadcast. With the beefy looking guy in a pink yukata a few sizes too small and the lady beefcake in a gaudy blue catsuit. They're digging out a bunch of small post-its with a few scrawled on napkins from their pockets or folds, with the former sliding his old fox mask to the side of his head as he goes over their loot pile.

Eventually they move onto the communicators, things they're more familiar with than dealing with patron spirits or bathhouse customers of Koriko. Exchanging their frequency numbers and sending texts to test out the connection. And, occasionally, leaning over each others shoulders to try out a number of different emoticons before simmering down. Although the awful late night TV shows pull their attention from time to time. he frowns hard when he realizes that he's turned the video on. that's not what he was aiming for. a second later, the video cuts off... and several seconds after that, a text transmission is sent out.]

Broadcast: Fleet-wide; video
Action: Planet and Pathstone
When: 22nd

ACTION;

[Those visiting the planet today might notice Crowley happily helping himself to the free alcohol on offer. He doesn't get involved in the festivities1 instead just grabbing crates upon crates of booze, happily taking them towards the waiting Pathstone. Occasionally, he will stop to get himself some terrible food, or watch people wandering by.

Those aboard the Pathstone will have the delights of Crowley trying to get his crates into various nooks and crannies of his communications station. He still avoids the cargo hold, just in case Tek has stored more dead bodies down there.

Eventually, he notices his captain's bunk is missing, which he cannot allow. The nice bed is the one and only decent thing about the crappy job that has been thrust upon him.
]

Who the sodding hell has nicked my bed?!!

NETWORK;

[Crowley finally deigns to post to the network himself from his comms station, occasionaly flicking switches to listen to random BEE-BOP noises. Why? He has his reasons. Reasons that may or may not involve an attempt to put annoying flash games on the system at some point in the future.]

'Lo people, Crowley here, unfortunate Captain of the SS Dysfunction. Sorry, Pathstone. Wondering if anyone else got one of these.

[He holds the weird red stone one of the happy inhabitants had given him.]

Because I don't know about you, but I've gained a healthy distrust of possibly magical objects, and I'd like to know if one of these had blown up on anyone, or turned someone into a slug or something. [A considerate pause.] No one's started worshipping them, have they? Because that doesn't end well.

Where are you, droot flooters? What are you up to? Stay out of trouble, now.]

[ooc: hi everyone! I thought I'd give this a try and see how the game liked it. What we have here is a mass mingle post. Who: Phoebus' Crow, anyone else.
Broadcast: n/a.
Action: Way-station
When: ...Now?? Oct 10th.

[ It's about time. Pheobus' Crow isn't generally one to feel at all claustrophobic but between the strange hair-changing girl and the captain wannabe (though now he supposes he actually is captain, of all the misfortune) he's more than ready to spread his wings and work out the irritable little kinks that have been starting to build in the back of his mind.

The moment they're docked and the main doors open, Crow is gone from the ship and takes to the air. While the mall strip-like areas remain oddly bare and unwelcoming there's at least plenty of room for him to spread his wings and ample space to perch. The courtyard looks nice and all that, but something about having the vacuum of space above his head isn't quite so comforting as an actual roof.

So if you happen to be making your way through the outer ring of the way-station you might just hear the sound of a crow, cawing. Or maybe you're just crazy. Birds in space? Pshaw. ]
