[What follows is a somewhat exasperated, very tired plea to the public, accompanied by a slow grinding noise every couple of seconds. For those who would recognize it, it's the sound of metal being sharpened, slowly and painstakingly.]

Hey, question for ships out there with security officers. Is it possible for those of us who don't have access to weaponry to buy or trade for a gun? I've got a project I'd like to try working on, but I don't have the parts here.

If trading for a weapon outright is against some sort of rule, or no one's willing, I'd take parts or schematics instead. Anything's better than what I have.

[For those aboard the Paisley, Kirito has been buried in engineering for a loooooong time, and the sound of grinding metal may or may not be echoing in the hallway outside of the entry door. Sorry ~~not sorry~~ for the potential headaches.]

Neat! My mom had a sword. It used to be in her lion, but I lent it to my friend Connie!

[Wait, your mom has a lion??]

I did!! That Lion. He sure is full of secrets! He can make a glowy spot on his forehead, and when I reached for it, I pulled Mom's Sword right out of it!

[Good grief. This kid... is really full of interesting (weird) stories.]

Do... you know why it was in a lion?

[He's a constant source of entertainment, really.]

Not really! My mom had a lot of secrets, but it's okay, she had a lot of responsibilities. But it looks like she used Lion to hide a lot of her important stuff! I guess Lion's just that special!

[He's not missing those past-tense speech patterns. He seems pretty chipper, but still, poor kid.]

What kind of responsibilities did she need a sword - or a sword-hiding lion - for?

She was in a war. A big war. She was protecting Earth from her own homeworld.

I don't know a lot about it, but... she had to keep a lot of her secrets, even from the people she loved the most. Her sword is really special... and it looks like Lion's really special too, even if she didn't tell any of the other Crystal Gems about him. He's got a whole lot of interesting junk inside the dimension in his mane!

[Yikes. That's darker than expected.]

...Er... are you saying your mom's an alien?

Yep!

[He says that with a nod, as if it's a matter of fact. ...Apparently he doesn't see the need for elaboration.]

[He did say that the Crystal Gem people were from space, but... it's still hard to believe.]

So... that's why you and she have those powers?

[And an interdimensional space lion, apparently.]

That's right! Gems have all kinds of special powers. And I'm half-Gem! [He pulls up his shirt again to show off his belly jewel.]

Right, right. I remember now.

[Hard to forget. The kid's so proud of it.]

So she's the sword, and you're the shield.

Yeah, that's kind of how it worked out. Ex- except that she's not around anymore. But I lent her sword to Connie, and we work together like jam buds!

She's... not around?

[He asks cautiously, because he suspects the answer might be unpleasant, but it's hard not to question it.]

Nope. [He shakes his head quietly.]

She gave up her physical form so that I could be born. [His hand absentmindedly hovers over the spot of his shirt that's covering his gem.]

That's why I have her gem.

[That's... not exactly the answer he expected, but it probably amounts to about the same thing.]

So... you never knew your mom.

N-no... except from stories and some video tapes...

...But it's okay. It's like she's always with me through my gem, and everyone tells me a lot of great things about her.

Ah- sorry, sorry, it was rude of me to ask. Actually, I never knew my birth mother, either.

It's okay, you didn't know for sure. [He rubs at his arm a little sadly.] I- I'm sorry you didn't know yours.

It's okay. You've got other people who look after you at least, right?

Yep! My dad and the Crystal Gems!

It took me a while to figure this out, but I feel like the family you know is way more important than the family you don't. As long as you've got someone in your corner, it's fine.
