[At least two weeks have passed since the Drift Fleet passengers woke up on this strange wing of the Marsiva... Some new passengers have even joined the group instead of being Shuffled off to a fleet ship! The large monitor in the central room remains quiet for now, so how is everyone holding up?

Have you been relaxing? Enjoying the Earth media? If you can even remember them, how have Calibrations been treating you? Has anyone started getting a little stir-crazy?

How does yours work, then?

I just come up with a spell for whatever it is I want to do, and then it happens.

... For anything you want to do?

Pretty much. And sometimes stuff you don't want to do, if your spell isn't clear enough.

What about, for example, a spell to drag the Atroma to us?

[delincuente]

Atroma would block it, unfortunately. [She gives an apologetic shrug, and gestures to the ship around them.] The bastards kind of put a damper on my magic. I can't affect anything outside of the ships' hull.

So they've set a limit to range and targeting...

[She's already lost in thought, the gears turning in her head. Something that versatile must be able to be used...]

Can you tell me in more detail how it works?

[Alex starts to form a sentence, but instead just decides to show her. She reaches down and pulls her wand out from her boot. Taking a breath, she points it at a paper tower someone's left sitting out on the counter.]

This paper towel should say goodbye,
I'd like to turn it into a... fly.

[And simple as that, the paper towel seems to shrink in on itself with a little whoosh, and a tiny mayfly buzzes away in its wake.]

[... Okay, that is just met with a long, blank stare. For a good while, in fact. She seems too stunned to even respond, until...]

Yeah, it's pretty much just a free-for-all.

... So you do a little rhyme and you can basically control reality around you? Do you have any limits?

[delincuente]

Well... I once accidentally almost erased my family from existence. So basically, I haven't figured that out yet.

[experiencepoints]

... Honestly, being erased from existence isn't that bad, it's what comes afterwards that's the huge pain.

[Making a shitty joke about the situation is the only way she knows how to cope with this. What the hell is going on. Why does this person have unlimited cosmic power. No wonder Willow wasn't afraid of sharing a dorm with all of those other crazy assholes, she was probably the most powerful of them all.]

You can erase people from existence, you can transform things, you say you don't know if you have limits... But you can't do a basic cure spell?

I mean, they exist. There are wizard doctors, wizard dentists, all that stuff. But I never made it that far in my lessons.

Lessons? So there's more active components to it than just the rhyming? Or is it just like how to use it effectively...

[She trails off, her manners finally catching up with her.]

Uh, sorry. I studied magic a lot at home, so I'm interested. If you'd rather not answer, you don't have to.

Well, some spells you just have to memorize, and then there are magical objects, which are a whole other can of worms. But improv magic is what we always used the most. The lessons weren't, like, totally comprehensive. Just preparing us for the big competition.

[Which always gets the biggest reaction from her friends, so she takes a preparatory breath first.]

I'm not a full wizard yet. I was supposed to compete with my brothers once we grew up, and the winner would get to keep their powers and go on to learn everything else.

... Wait. Competition? Keeping your powers?

Okay, I must be misunderstanding that.

Yeah. If I ever go back home I'll have a few more years until that, and then I'll probably not be a wizard anymore. My older brother's kind of a genius.

... Okay, how and why?!

[delincuente]

I don't know. That's just the way the rules are.

That rule is stupid and should be set on fire.

That's what basically everyone has been saying for centuries. I mean, wizards are gonna die out eventually if they keep it up, but try arguing with a bunch of ancient white guys.

I don't know how it works in your world, but the final for mage classes in my high school was a one-on-one duel, so sure, I'll argue.

[She's basically just talking big to try to make herself feel better at this point, because the thought of losing her magic again is probably the most horrifying thing she can think of.]

... I dunno, I won. You got a worse grade, I guess? We were being graded more on tactics and application of what we'd learned to the situation.
