[Nami pulls back from the memory with a faint sense of familiarity, more for the situation than any of the players. She frowns. She also kind of wanted to know what happened next-- meeting his mother like that couldn't have ended there, surely.]

You didn't see her again until then?

[Yes, that's only a portion of the memories associated with her. But it's all that's on that photograph.

Kurt frowns and looks down, turning his attention away from the food as he reflects.]

Well, I kind of did, but... it's complicated. That was the first time I realized that she was - was my mother.

Before then? She had been posing as the principal at our school. And we only knew her real self as... as an enemy. Part of the groups that wanted to make life terrible for normal humans.

[Oh. Mother is a terrorist. Awkward.]

And she chose to reach out to you anyway. [Normal humans? Kurt isn't one by any means, she can see that from just that memory. There's more than one piece she's missing here, then.]

Because she loves you or because she wanted you on side? [Well, there's always both as an answer.]

I... I still ask myself that question, to this day.

I don't think I'll ever find out... what she really thought of me.

[Nami opens her mouth to point out that there's still time, and then catches the way he phrased that.]

You can't... see her anymore?

[She can't quite bring herself to ask outright if she's dead.]

[He can't bring himself to say it either, at least not directly. Nor can he meet her eyes.]

...She's gone.

What happened?

[His tone is very soft, but in a lifeless manner.]

Would you believe she got turned into stone? And... and then got broken...?

[The memories are hidden somewhere in the room, but he feels no reason to not answer that question directly.]

[Her gaze drops immediately to the scattered pieces of stone on the ground. Oh, god.]

Who did such a thing?

[He glances at her with sad eyes, but then he glances back down.

This is one thing he won't say aloud, Nami. She'll have to look for more memories to unlock the rest of the story or leave it be.]

[She stares back at him for a moment, then squares her shoulders. And snatches one of the pieces of stone off the ground before she can lose her nerve.]
