Not really. I mean, Mal--she's the captain--she tries to come up with stuff, but it's more of a pain in the ass than any real work.

[There's no such thing as quiet on the Caprine between Joseph and Mal. He is a loudmouth and she enjoys riling people up. It wouldn't be any better if they didn't get along as well as they do.]

Well, Mal's usually down in the engine room. I don't know how much of what she's doing down there is actually keeping the ship going, [he'd guess maybe 15%,] but she knows it inside and out if there is a problem.

As for me, I'm just here to steer and work the teleporter for you guys. Not necessary all the time, but I don't think you'll be complaining the next time someone starts trying to blow us up if I get us out of dodge better than the autopilot.

[However, when he inevitably crashes, you're free to complain all you like.]

Is danger like that common here?

Nah, not really. Most people seem to leave us alone while we're out here. But it's happened twice now, I guess.

Well, you know, ancient people used to watch other people beat the crap out of each other for fun. I doubt it's lost its touch.

It's certainly possible for it to get old.

None of us really are. That's kind what sucks about this place.

Oh for the most part. But I mean... [Joseph gestures out the front windshield and shrugs a little.] It's space and we're not in control of everything. There's always a little danger out there. That's just life.
