[Nel can be very good at disappearing and hiding when he wants to be... and it never occurs to him that someone might notice after the fact. so, this totally startles him!

he automatically ducks back a step, surprised and immediately looking apologetic.]

--What? You have?

[dancingmd]

[Gentle smile.]

Of course I have. I like when you come to visit.

[... even if you do try to touch everything in the lab that you shouldn't.]

[catamite]

...You do?

[he doesn't try-- it just kind of happens.]

[dancingmd]

Mmm-hmm. You're my friend, and it's always nice to see friends, isn't it?

[catamite]

[he still looks a little skittish, but that at least gets a bit of a grin out of him.]

...Yeah. I guess so.

[dancingmd]

Besides... I was worried. That maybe I'd scared you too much.

[catamite]

Scared me--?

[it actually takes him a second to think back, past the calibrations and the Marsiva, to the last time he'd actually seen her.

and when it finally clicks, his ears fall back a little as he loses his smile.]

Oh. Yeah... Well, the whole thing was scary, I guess. So... it's okay.

[dancingmd]

It really scared me too. But I'm glad we're okay.

[catamite]

Yeah, me too.

[and that's about where he starts his usual glancing around, searching for a way out of a conversation that is becoming even a little uncomfortable.]

That whole planet wasn't great...

[dancingmd]

[She sighs.] No, I can't say I was too fond of it either.

[If he's looking for something distracting, there is always still that weird book on the table...]

[catamite]

Just lots of stupid, bad stuff happened on it...

[which, yes, he is a little distracted while saying it... because he's currently turning his head to try and read the title of what's sitting there on the table.

he's not exactly a speedy reader though, so... give him a sec.]

[Her brow furrows. "Lots" of bad stuff? Does he mean besides the kidnapping?

But then he's trying to read the book, and she knows by now asking him directly about anything won't get her much of anywhere. So she turns the book towards him helpfully.]

It was in my gift basket.

[catamite]

[and his brow furrows when he's sure he's read the title accurately. he doesn't get it.]

...What is it?

[dancingmd]

It's a self-help book.

[Pause.]

My husband bought it for me as a joke, before we got married.

[catamite]

It is?

[that's not what he imagined by reading the title at all.]

And I didn't know you were married. Guess it makes sense, though.

[dancingmd]

[She looks up at Nel with mild surprise. She'd just assumed she had brought up Jack at some point.]

I suppose I don't talk about him much. He... died, years ago.

[catamite]

Oh... sorry.

[he rubs the back of his neck, looking pretty apologetic.]

I wouldn't have asked if I'd known.

It's alright, I don't mind you asking questions. Talking about him makes me sad sometimes, but it's not overwhelming.
