I was on the Heron the other day to see him. I'm surprised we didn't run into each other then!

We have history. I don't remember most of it, but she does.

[She nods thoughtfully... That first conversation she had with Nat is making more and more sense.]

Having people show up from your future... It's difficult.

Is that normal here? [ Or is it just me and my horrible luck? ]

People showing up from the past isn't any better..

It's hard to say what exactly constitutes as normal here, but yes, for a time, I had someone here from my universe, but three years into the future. And I know we're not the only ones.

Was it difficult having them around? Knowing what was going to happen?

Having him around? No. Julian's the only person I've seen from my world in nine months. Having him here was... a relief, in many ways.

But finding out what's going to happen? Yes, that's something I still struggle with.

[ That's still one thing he can't be completely certain of. Does choice dictate what will happen, or is it largely based upon fate? ]

No, because now maybe when I go back, I can change things, help save him.

[Not the answer she should be giving, according to the Temporal Prime Directive, but it's the honest one.]

Do you think something like that is possible? Altering the future by changing one decision?

[ It's definitely a heavy sort of question, but he's curious and she seems like she'll be honest. ]

Time is a more delicate thing than we think and there are an infinite number of possibilities. Perhaps I can't change everything about what Julian told me - there are forces already in motion that are far beyond my control - but maybe I can change some things.

Does it help a little? Knowing that?

[ So, even if you change one small thing it may not change larger events, but it could? It's all confusing to think about. ]

It does. [Small smile.] I never have been good at simply standing by and letting things happen.

What do you do when it isn't permissible to speak up about it?

[ When you're not allowed to have a voice outside of mission parameters. ]

I'm afraid I've never been good at staying quiet either.

[There's a bit of a self-deprecating smile at that before she elaborates further.]

We do have rules, should we meet someone from another time, or indeed, travel ourselves. Rules that are in place to help protect us. I do my best to follow those directives but sometimes... sometimes you have to break the rules. The difficulty is knowing when to do so.

Oh. Alright..

[ He had no idea there were rules to this sort of thing. She talks as if she's had experience with breaking rules-- normalizes it, almost. His brow furrows and looks back at her. ]

But-- What are the consequences of breaking the rules?

Depends. I could receive a reprimand and be demoted or lose my job. Or worse- I could misjudge the situation entirely and make things worse, putting everyone in danger. It's not a decision I have or would ever make lightly.

In the past, it's always helped me to have someone to talk to about these things as well. Someone uninvolved, but that I still trust.

[ Unfortunately, there's no one. No one he can trust, at least.. He'd be on his own should he choose to even make the decision. If he even remembered it when he went back. ]
