I want to know specifically what he did to you and your group that caused you to initially hate him.

He was trying to capture my friend, who was the Avatar in our world. The Avatar is the one person in the whole world connected to and able to control all four elements, and it's his job to keep the world in balance.

Zuko and his family wanted to stop Aang from doing just that.

[ she takes a breath. ]

He was really mean about it, too. Just saying.

[ He looks at her like he's expecting her to keep going, and then she just doesn't. Well. ]

'Really mean' is somewhat vague. You mean that he took out some of your comrades? [ Because that would be Sasuke's definition. ]

He stalked us, harassed us, did terrible things and used them as leverage against us - [ she's talking about her mother's necklace, haha... ] - and then immediately stabbed me in the back the first time I trusted him. He was dangerous.

But... people change. If you'd told me back then that he'd be one of my best friends, I probably would've told you to lay off the cactus juice.

I'm sure he's far more aware of his mistakes than you are, or have ever been. He's lucky you saw past them.

[ katara considers for a moment. it'd be easy, validating even, to agree wholeheartedly with him there, to say: yes, he is lucky, other people wouldn't have extended the trust to zuko that aang and his group had. and maybe, years ago, she would have said something like that, but now? the sentiment feels grossly disingenuous.

she sighs, seeming to concede. ]

Yeah. But we're lucky, too. I don't know where we'd standing be if he hadn't had a change of heart. I'm not totally sure it'd be "on the winning side."

At least then you likely would've died with strong faith in your convictions and the knowledge that you fought for what was right. That's preferable to living with doubts, as he would have.

[ His expression momentarily sours when that fox stirs, approaching where he's sitting on the couch to just stare up at him. Why. ]
