I personally often find it’s easier to understand things by doing, rather than simply by being told about it. [She gives him a warm smile.] But of course I'm happy to help whenever I can.

Most of the evidence we have seems to point to time flowing differently between here and our homeworlds. However much time we spend in the fleet, it'll be the same time at home as when we left.

I know... none of us belong here. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to who stays and who goes. If I knew how to get you home, I would, in a heartbeat.

People have tried, but our augments keep us from straying too far from the Marsiva. If you try to stay behind when the fleet leaves a station or planet, or try to take a ship beyond a certain rage, you’ll be teleported back to your ship. [She looks at him very seriously and her tone brooks no argument. She’s prepared for what he might ask next, because it’s what almost everyone asks next, including her.] Any attempt to remove the augment results in unparalleled pain, both physical and psychological. Which is not to say I’m not still looking into it, but so far, we have not found a viable solution.

But even if we found a way around the augment problem, there is still the issue of not knowing where or when we are. Escaping from Atroma is one thing, getting back home is entirely another.

The augments? [Robb lifts a hand to touch the small bump on the right side of his head.] Is that what they use to control us? Is there no one able to take them out? You, mayhaps? [But he silences his questions when she continues to speak.]

Can they be broken? [It could be that if someone punches him in the head the device could break.] I do not look forward to pain, once I took an arrow to the arm and I have been left for days battling a gruesome fever. [And that is how he met Jeyne.]

I doubt they could be broken, physically, but perhaps the signal could be interfered with.

[She gives him a sympathetic look.]

Signal? [Of course he does not entirely get that. One of many, many things he still has to wrap his head around.] Well, if the signal is a problem... [How must he interpret this correctly? He moves the tips of his fingers over the bump on the side of his head.] How can this...give out signals?

I do not expect things to go easy, my lady. All I can hope for is a bit of luck.

[Um. How does she explain this? Normally she simply wouldn't because of the prime directive, but here... Well here things are different.]

They're invisible signals, that only computers can read. Almost like... Like if you were to write a letter with a secret message, a code that only your recipient would understand. Except this code is sent through the air.

Like a sound? [How can a man write in the air? That is folly. There is a raven needed for that. Or this communicator.] Because no one can write in the air.

A little, yes, though computers can't really hear, not like we do. Everything has to be translated into their code for them to understand.

[She scrunches her nose a little.]

I'm afraid I'm not giving you a very good explanation, am I?

[Computers are such an integral part of her life, of everyone's life in her world, that she's honestly never given it much thought, never had to explain to anyone who had no familiarity with them.]

No... [Robb shakes his head and laughs afterwards.] ...I am not from this...period, I think. I cannot picture it.

[She nods. It's difficult enough being here from another space faring society; she can't imagine what it's like when you're coming from a world that doesn't have computers or starships or anything she considers to be basic modern technology. At least he seems to have a sense of humor about it and... He's not crying anymore, so that's a very good thing.]

I hope things will become less confusing, as we go along.

I hope so as well. [Robb can be quite stagnant and tends to cling to what his father has taught him, deeming that the only truths that matter.] Yet, I do hope to leave for home soon. [With his siblings.]
