[A woman wearing all black lies face up in her bunk, perfectly still, her arms straight out by her sides. It's impossible to tell if she's breathing or not, but surely she must be, right?

Watch long enough and you'll see her come alive, shooting straight up with a gasp that becomes a heart-wrenching sob. Tears stream down her face and she rocks back and forth. She's saying something over and over, but the only word that can be heard clearly is "No, no, no." This goes on for a long minute before she really seems to realize where she is.

Or rather, where she is not.]

Cordelia?!

[She scrambles out of the bed and stands in the middle of the room, calling out in her thick Louisiana accent.]

Zoe? .... Myrtle?

[She sinks back on to the bed, clutching her head in her hands, her breathing becoming increasingly labored as she tries to fight the panic.]

Shit, shit, shit. Oh God, please, help me. This ain't right at all.

[Not knowing what else to do, she assumes her prior position, closes her eyes, and starts to chant. Those from Earth might recognize it as Latin.]

Spiritu duce, in me est. [Deep breath.] Spiritu... duce. Spiritu - [Another sob and she rolls over on her side and curls into a fetal position.] No, no. I can't... I can't go back there.

[Finally she gives him a little smile. He's only a kid after all - no point in worrying him further.]

Hi Misty! Your name's real pretty! [He tries to put on a smile as well, hoping it'll help her.]

Well, that's quite a name, ain't it! Sounds like a superhero!

You really think so?? Thank you! Aww, bit I'm just a normal kid!

...Well except that I'm only half human and I do wind up fighting a lot of monsters...!

Only half human? So what's the rest of you then?

[She tilts her head as she studies him. Like the others, he's too far away for her to get a good read on him, but there's something there, if she focuses, something good and light.]

[He scratches at his head.]

Oh, I'm part Gem! On my mom's side.

Part... Gem? What does that mean?

[jamminshield]

Oh right! You don't know about gems. It's basically like being part alien. Aliens who are like rocks! [He says that cheerily and proudly.]

[mistyday]

A rock alien... can't say I ever heard of that. But then, never met an alien til now. Never thought I would either.

[jamminshield]

There's a first time for everything! [He waves eagerly.] I'm really happy to meet you!

[mistyday]

Aren't you a sweetheart!

[But then her smile fades just a bit.]

How old are you, Steven? Are you here all by yourself?

Aw shucks!

I'm 13! Aaand nope, I'm not by myself! There's a whole crew of nice people here, and I've made plenty of space-friends, and Pearl's here too!

[mistyday]

[13?! She definitely thought he was younger than that.]

Pearl's the nicest person ever! She's one of the Crystal Gems, and she helped to raise me, and she's always doing her best to get better and look out for me! She's so great!

[What is that like, having someone looking out for you? But if she's jealous, she's trying to not let it show.]

[She laughs a little, at his eagerness, and at how different this all is for her.] I'd like that... I don't have many friends, where I come from.

[She nods.]

Thank you! When I'm off this boat, I plan to do as much explorin' as I can, so I'm sure I'll meet loads of new people. How many are here anyway?

Um... I never counted! But enough so that a bunch of spaceships all have crews... It seems like a lot of people come and go from here!

[Living with lots of people... she isn't used to that either. It's a relief in one way, not to be alone, but the prospect is daunting at the same time.]
