[ Much of Ino's time on the Three Twins lately is spent working on adding things to the lab, now that they have one. While yes, technically, it is Nanako's domain ... she can still be found in there on occasion, mixing herbs into a paste to make healing salve and painkillers.

Every once in awhile, though, she'll come back from the Iskaulit with something new and pretty to display on the kitchen table. It's not where Ino lives if there's not a flower arrangement somewhere!

Feel free to run into her anywhere, or knock on the Captain's door if you need something. ]

[See Misty has this gift. We don't know if it's really magic or not, but somehow she just always seems to appear out of nowhere. And here she is, in the lab of the Three Twins, leaning over Ino's work table, watching her with great curiosity.]

[ino]

[ Ino can sense people's presences pretty easily, but that does take her a little by surprise. She manages not to be too spooked, though -- just pausing in the middle of the mixing for a moment before looking up to see Misty. ]

Uh. Hi?

[ This lady looks unfamiliar, so she's probably new ... but Ino isn't sure if she's new to the ship or just new to the Fleet. ]

Hey!

[Big smile.]

I'm Misty, friend of Souji's. You're the captain, right?

[ino]

... Oh!

[ A visitor. Okay. She relaxes a little and smiles, offering a hand for a handshake. ]

That's me. I'm Ino.

[mistyday]

[Misty's handshake is a little firmer than might be expected.]

Pleased to meet you.

[Then she returns her attention the herbs Ino is grinding, picking up one of the loose sprigs next to the bowl and giving it a light sniff.]

I've never seen any plants like these before. Makes sense, seeing as we're in space and all - but what are you using them for? Some kinda salve it looks like.

[ino]

[ She is a little surprised by that, but then again, her handshake is also probably firmer than you might expect from the teensy blonde. ]

Yeah. I'm making a painkiller. That right there -- [ She points to the sprig that Misty's just picked up ] -- seems to be a pretty effective equivalent of the valerian plant.

[mistyday]

Oh yeah? I would have thought alien plants would be totally crazy, not like ours at all.

[She examines the paste.]

Have you thought about putting some turmeric in there? It'd probably give it a nice boost and I know Souji's got some in the kitchen.

[ino]

Some of them are. If you check out the garden on the Iskaulit, we definitely have some super weird ones, too.

[ She'll move the pestle she's been using to mush everything together out of the way so she can look at it the paste properly. ]

I did, but -- it's a salve that's applied directly to the skin, and turmeric tends to stain, so I've left it out in the past.

Mmm.

[With some of the things she's had to heal... well a little stained skin is the least of her worries. But she supposes it makes sense.]

I haven't been to the Iskaulit yet. Still trying to get the hang of this piloting shuttles thing. It's weird, knowing how to do stuff without ever properly learning it.

[ it may be her domain, but nanako always welcomes the help. it's a little challenging to manage the lab all by herself and she's still getting the hang of things. the one thing she's really good at is keeping it clean and organized at least.

when ino's there mixing herbs, nanako is right next to her watching attentively and writing down notes in her journal. ]

[ WHAT A GOOD STUDENT. She smiles. ]

Yep! We had a lot of -- well, similar plants growing in the greenhouse for the flower shop. And it was a part of my apprenticeship as a healer, to learn different kinds of medicines and antidotes that could be used for common ailments and poisons.

Oh wow! So you're a doctor?

[ omg that's so cool... what can't ino do?? ]

[ino]

Not exactly...

[ How to explain this. ]

I can treat wounds and administer medicine, but I couldn't necessarily diagnose some illnesses, or perform complex surgery the way a professional doctor could.

I guess you could say I'm more like a nurse, I guess.

[kotatsu]

Oh...

[ i mean, like, that's still really cool, and that awed look is still on her face. but then it turns into the smallest of frowns. ]

That's a lot better than what most people can do. They should have made you lab support instead. Then you could help even more people when they need it.

[ino]

[ She pauses in crushing up what she's working on ... and sets down her tools, looking over at Nanako. ]


... No, I think it's good that they made you lab support, Nanako.

[kotatsu]

But I have a lot of stuff to learn still and I'm not sure if I'm really good enough for it yet.

[ she has her augment, sure, and there's a lot of things that she suddenly knows how to do in terms of lab equipment and first aid. but nanako also knows there's a difference between knowing how to do something and actually doing it. ]

[ino]

Yeah, but ... you know what? That's okay. Some people here get assigned to jobs they've never done before, and it's kind of scary at first, because they don't feel like they're ready for it ... but it gives them an opportunity to challenge themselves to learn something new. Something they might not have ever thought they'd be good at.

As long as you truly want to help people, you'll be a fine lab support, Nanako. And until you feel confident enough to do it on your own, I'm happy to help you practice.

[ She gives her a reassuring smile. Nanako is definitely young, and she doesn't want to place the burden of being in charge of something so instrumental on her until she feels ready ... but she's confident that Nanako has the smarts and the determination to do a good job once she's learned the technical side of it. ]

[ she listens to ino and takes a moment to think over what she says. nanako doesn't mind learning new things, but she's never had it thrust upon her so suddenly as it has now. and it is a little scary, because her job is important and there may be people depending on her in the future.

but she's a big girl now, isn't she? she's used to taking care of herself and her father. she doesn't mind doing that for others as well.

eventually, she smiles and nods. ]

Okay. [ she just has to work hard and do her best. ] Thanks, Ino!

[ She grins. ]

Of course! I don't want you to feel overwhelmed or worried.

[ She'll pick up the pestle again, moving to grind the plants down a little bit more. ]

We're all part of the same crew, so it's important to help each other when the others need it.
