[It had been a while since Simon had addressed the network, but he felt like it was important. He realized when the planet visit had come around how little he'd actually been interacting with people since River left, and it was taking its toll on him.

Ah- hello to everyone, especially our many newer arrivals. I have been quiet lately, but I figured it was time to introduce myself- I'm Simon Tam, medical officer on the Bloodsport. I... [He hesitated.] I've been keeping to myself a lot over the past few months, and I'm wanting to change that. I would like to learn something new- how to garden so I can help grow medical plants on the Iskaulit, perhaps. I would also be up for brushing up on my self-defense skills, since I am quite rusty at best. And if anybody has any other suggestions, I am willing to listen.

[Steve happens to be walking by when Simon makes the announcement, and he stops and backtracks the few steps necessary to lean against his bunkroom door. He looks like he's been giving the gym equipment the work-out of its life, but honestly he's starting to feel like a hamster in a ball. ]

I would appreciate that a lot. I'm not much of a skilled fighter in any sense, but I don't want to be left helpless, either.

In my experience, doctors are never helpless.

[Simon rubbed his chin as he thought.]

Perhaps... I think I'd like to start with learning how to break someone's hold on me.

[That-- is a very specific request but as far as self-defense moves go it's one of the best and most basic. Being able to throw a punch doesn't mean anything if you get jumped and pinned down.

So he cocks his head off to one side.]

[He doesn't know the name, but the good Doc is an adult and plenty capable of making his own decisions and of looking after himself. No point voicing concern. Instead, Steve nods.]

[Otherwise he'll head out on his way. Steve doesn't usually fare well with protracted conversation.]
