Ah- hello to everyone, especially our many newer arrivals. I have been quiet lately, but I figured it was time to introduce myself- I'm Simon Tam, medical officer on the Bloodsport. I... [He hesitated.] I've been keeping to myself a lot over the past few months, and I'm wanting to change that. I would like to learn something new- how to garden so I can help grow medical plants on the Iskaulit, perhaps. I would also be up for brushing up on my self-defense skills, since I am quite rusty at best. And if anybody has any other suggestions, I am willing to listen.

I would, please. I've been gathering some of the plants people use to make herbal medicines, and I'd like to be able to grow more of my own.

[She nods.] It’s a good idea. Ino and Vision are doing the same for their ships. Maybe I could come over and see what you have so far? I’d also like to see what space you have to work with on your ship. While the bulk of what we grow will be on the Iskaulit, if every ship has their own personal garden, that will improve our chances of rebuilding should something happen to the Iskaulit.

Yes- that sounds lovely. As I said to someone else, the more I can do to lessen my dependence on Atroma, the better. I won't be able to cover everything, but collaborating with others should help us to some degree.

What sort of self-defense did you have in mind? Just basic hand to hand?

Hand-to-hand would be good, yes. I'm not very comfortable using weapons.

I may be able to give you some pointers and lessons in that, if there is no one else you'd prefer. I'm not an expert but as a warrior I learned it before I ever picked up any weapon. You never know when you might not have it.

I can certainly help with self-defense. Unfortunately, I can't profess to be an excellent gardener when the species keep changing on me. I imagine, it depends on the plant in question.

I am still learning a lot about the plants here, too- herbal medicine isn't my area of expertise, I'm afraid, but I've found a few things that can help with fevers and burns. I would be grateful for any self-defense lessons, though.

It's not terribly difficult. I've written a basic program to monitor the water levels in the garden relative to what each species needs, and the temperature remains consistent. The only tricky part is harvesting, as each has different requirements. We could start with seeds and work out from there.

Juggling, I think. I'm a bit too much of a goody two shoes for picking pockets.

Picking pockets is not only for those of questionable morality. Being able to stealthily lift a set of keys off guards is very useful if you get into trouble. Or your friends do.

Are you talking the I-want-to-win-a-fight kind of self defense, or more like the I-want-to-escape-with-my-life kind?

The latter. I will never be comfortable as a fighter, but nor do I want to be defenseless, either.

Well, I could certainly help with that. I've gotten good at getting out of tight spots. No offense to the Jedi, but we don't all have the Force to help us out.

[Steve happens to be walking by when Simon makes the announcement, and he stops and backtracks the few steps necessary to lean against his bunkroom door. He looks like he's been giving the gym equipment the work-out of its life, but honestly he's starting to feel like a hamster in a ball. ]

I would appreciate that a lot. I'm not much of a skilled fighter in any sense, but I don't want to be left helpless, either.

[He crosses his arms - not defensively, just as a way to have something to do with his hands as he's holding up the wall.]

In my experience, doctors are never helpless.

[Knowing the human body is, as far as he's concerned, a better asset than being able to hit like a truck.]
