[Kanan is sitting at the Málum on the Iskaulit, having himself a quiet drink as he contemplates the so-called Space Bar he passed getting to this particular alternate establishment. Neither one were quite like the cantina he used to work in back on Gorse and neither one of them had quite the crowds either. There was always a few here and there, but it would be a real stretch to ever call them packed. Which is what prompts him to take the time to look at the ship rosters.]

I've been looking at the ship rosters today. It looks like all of the ships in this fleet are at max capacity. Is that normal?

[It's not because he was trying to figure out a way to get himself and Hera on the same ship! It was just... professional curiosity. That's all.]

I also didn't bother with an introduction on my last broadcast. My name is Kanan. [And the part where he'd actually give anything about himself is abruptly not included when he decides to end the feed.]

I found my way there. [ and perhaps she needn't say much more than that. instead, she slides the question back towards him: ] What of your rebellion? Are you a voluntary force?

[Hm. Yes.]

... like I said before, I'm a sucker for lost causes. But this is one ride it's too late for me to get off of. [So, voluntary and yet reluctant.]

Action has a way of whisking us far from where we once were. [ not not just geographically, but biographically. peggy can't imagine returning to the live she used to live. she doesn't fit there any longer. ]

Isn't that the truth. What did you do before?

Before the war?

[ a self-conscious laugh. ] Quite dull, I'm afraid. Mostly, I spent a great deal of time being reprimanded at school.

[ she'd plunged straight into bletchley from sixth form. there hadn't been much time for anything else. ]

Yourself?

[Well, the Jedi order was too long a concept to go explaining to someone he'd literally only just met in a bar. So in lieu of that, there was classic misdirection.]

More or less the same story. I had a bad habit of asking too many questions.

Is that so? [ light -- almost teasing. but then again he'd not asked much of her. merely more than to what she was accustomed. ] Not always a terrible quality in anyone -- though it tends to be frowned upon in soldiers.

I was never a soldier. [Something defensive rose in his response there, though he regretted it immediately. He might have clarified that point, but he sullenly diverted his attention elsewhere instead.]

[ oh, she just about barely reins in her patience on that one. not least of all because she remains more than a little touchy about the countless soldiers she'd witnessed on the fields themselves. and why shouldn't someone be proud to even be mistaken for one?

in a terse voice: ] I'm sorry if I had the wrong understanding. You talk about a war and a rebellion and of battle -- I'd thought it might be a logical conclusion.

[He doesn't need the Force to tell him that didn't go over well.]

I fought, don't get me wrong. In the Clone Wars, I was just a stupid kid wanting a piece of adventure before it was over. Now, I'm just helping where I can.

[Maybe he was a soldier as a kid. He didn't like to think he was, but that's what the Jedi Order had expected of him. But now he was unwilling to commit himself to any real military attachment - even if Hera already had.]

One of the finest soldiers my world has ever known might say precisely the same thing: he helps where he can. He wants to stand up to those bullies. [ a soft sigh. ] Soldier isn't a dirty word, you know.

[For him, it's hard to disconnect the word soldier from the ranks of clone troopers who slaughtered the Jedi Order, the droids who didn't care who got caught in their line of fire, or the stormtroopers that brought oppression wherever they went. The rebellion didn't have soldiers. Just fighters looking for a better life.]

Maybe not. But it's not exactly an admirable profession where I'm from.

Then I pity your fighters, and the cool reception they must endure. [ it had been much the same in the year after the war's end. heroes were heroes, until they flooded back stateside and wanted their jobs back. or (worse yet) couldn't work their jobs at all. hard men hardened further by a bloody war, and their country didn't know how to welcome them back without fireworks.

damned fireworks. ]

Don't bother. The only ones who deserved a better reception didn't ever come back from the fighting.

[Though if there was any that did like himself, he knows there was no welcome mat waiting for them. Ending the war only to become fugitives was no hero's welcome.]
