Who: Allen Walker
Broadcast: Video!
Action: Blue Fish
When: Today!
[For those who have been here awhile, it's a familiar feed. Allen's standing in behind a table in the lab, looking positive. Meanwhile Timcanpy sits behind him on a shelf, wearing a glowy stripe ribbon on his tail while he flaps his wings around- as if doing some sort of sign language interpretation for what Allen's saying]
Hello everyone! For those who don't know me, I'm Allen Walker, I'm one of the medics in the fleet. There seems to be a lot of new faces lately, so...either welcome aboard, or sorry you've been dragged into this- whatever you'd prefer.
[He clears his throat]
Anyway, just a couple quick announcements today! We'll be holding our bi-monthly blood drive the first weekend of February! The blood donated will be kept in case of medical emergencies that require a blood transfusion - in other words, using scientific methods to help someone whose lost a lot of blood. If you are interested in donating, we will pay you in money! In fact, we'll even pay you double the rate we usually pay since I know many of you are tight on funds.
So if you're interested and you're over the age of 16, please fill out the form attached to this video. [And what do you know, it's there] If you're interested in volunteering, please let me know. Vampires interested in volunteering will need to be able to have restraint around blood and will not be allowed to sample the blood.
This time, the drive will take place on the SS Paisley [Due to someone's psychotic sister making Blue Fish tightening up security], a thank you to Captain Alex and First Mate Stefan for the hospitality.
And of course, there will be cookies.
[Right, that out of the way]
Secondly, I'm sure everyone has noticed by now the crates that showed up in their cargo bay. My crewmate's scanner managed to detect they are gumballs inside that contain some unfamiliar substance. If there's anyone whose already opened their crate and would be willing to donate some of the cargo to our lab for us to study, we would be happy to give you money for it. [Though not nearly enough to cover the fee you'll get for breaking it open. Suckahs] Thank you.
That's all I have for today. Thank you and have a wonderful day! [He gives a wave, then cuts the feed]
[OOC: As always, the blood drive will be handwaved!]

So, what's a blood transfusion? How does it help someone who's lost blood? [no idea what it's for just take my blood]

To put it simply....a blood transfusion is when you take blood from a healthy person, and then using needles and some piping, you inject that blood into someone whose lost a large amount of blood.
As long as the blood is a match, and the procedure is done properly, it makes sure an injured person won't die of blood loss.

Blood really isn't that different person to person. In fact there's only four types of different blood in humans, so it's easier than one would think.

voice
And don't worry, you don't have to know. We do tests on any blood we receive to make sure it's fine, so we'll figure out the type then.
voice
Allen, is there any literature on this on the station? Or maybe in the Fleet's library? I'd love to hear more about how this works, but I don't want to keep you here all day...
voice
Wow, I don't find usually find people interested enough to want to read about it. [Sure, he meets lots of people who are awed by the science, but they're almost always satisfied by Allen quickly explaining]
I can loan you some of my old medical textbooks I've collected, if you'd like. I warn you though, they're not exactly light reading.

I'll bring them next time I see you.

It's..."draw blood". We draw blood. You bleeding out would be bad.
But alright. I'll have the books ready for you then.

Ah- well the reading will cover most of these things in-depth, but-
[He doesn't mind answering questions. Better to keep people interested than dismiss them]
Basically blood drawing works by inserting a needle attached to some tubing into a vein, and the blood gets pulled out into a bag, about a pint's worth- nothing dangerous as long as you're in good health. Once it's done, we test it by mixing a sample of the collected blood with antibodies, followed by another test that mixes it with another type of blood to see how it reacts to it. Through these two tests, we can determine blood types.
As for what happens if someone gets the wrong type...for humans, it can be bad. Our bodies will reject the blood and try to destroy it- which in worst case scenarios, could result in going into shock or dying. So that's why it's always good for medics to check your type first before treating you.
[By the way, this is all in his normal, friendly tone. Ah yes, the beautiul morbid science]
Now as for having the blood types- in humans, it's not quite as significant as elemental differences. It only really matters if you need blood, or during pregnancies of people with different blood types. But there are advantages and disadvantages...depending on how you look at it. For instance, Blood Type O- can be given to any human, regardless of blood type. But a person with Blood Type O- can only receive blood type O- if they need blood. Meanwhile, if a person with Blood Type AB+ can receive any type of blood if they need it, but their blood is only good for other people with Type AB+...who aren't very common.
But that's about where the differences for human blood ends. Some cultures believe that your blood type influences your personality, but I personally think that's rubbish.
Re: voice
Allen! You know all of that off the top of your head?
voice
[There was not a lot of time for slow research when lives were on the line after all]
Though it helps that I have to answer a lot of questions like this for the drive.
voice
So Allen, you're a medic? Are you a field medic too?
voice
[Which will probably never happen since it's not like there's a place to get a license here...but hey]

[There's a slight shrug on Allen's end, even if Sorey can't see it].
I suppose you could say it was more a change of heart, if anything.

[Hrmmmm]
...Rather personal. I'm not ready to share it just yet.
[Aka up your social rank Sorey gosh]
